5 To: BSA Board of Directors From: Tamara Roy AIA Re: President s Report Date: March 11, 2016 New Fellows The BSA is pleased to announce nine members have been selected for Fellowship. They are: Polly Carpenter FAIA (BSA and BSA Foundation), Gianne Conard FAIA (US General Services Administration), David Eisen FAIA (Abacus Architects + Planners), Emily Grandstaff-Rice FAIA (Arrowstreet), Steven Imrich FAIA (Cambridge Seven Associates), Anne-Marie Lubenau FAIA (Bruner Foundation), Peter Rose FAIA (Peter Rose + Partners), Gail Sullivan FAIA (Studio G Architects), Gary Wolf FAIA (Wolf Architects). Board Teams At the January retreat we identified four key issues to focus our attention to and identified teams to work on these issues. These are: Housing Tamara Roy AIA, Joe Geller, Jeffry Burchard AIA, Greg Bialecki, Mary Fichtner (staff) Future of BSA Tim Love AIA, Peter Kuttner FAIA, Brad Walker AIA, Jean Carroon FAIA, Natasha Espada AIA, Billy Craig (staff) Design Excellence Josiah Stevenson FAIA, Mark Pasnik AIA, Jim Collins FAIA, David Eisen FAIA, Carol Burns FAIA, Tamara Roy AIA, Pamela de Oliveira-Smith (staff) Civic Agenda Mike Davis FAIA, Stephen Gray Associate AIA, Patti Seitz AIA, Gretchen Schneider AIA Each team is responsible for helping define the challenge and leading a board discussion on how the BSA can best address the issue. Housing will be discussed at this March meeting, BSA Future at May, Civic at July and Design Excellence at November meetings. AIA President-elect Josiah Stevenson FAIA, Vice President Natasha Espada AIA and Eric White attended the AIA National Grassroots Leadership Convention in Detroit in February. They reported there were some excellent sessions headed by former Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm, former CEO/Founder of eprize and author Josh Linkner (The Road to Reinvention: How to Drive Disruption and Accelerate Transformation) and architecture researcher Hugh Hochberg Assoc. AIA. Each are speakers who would be worth bringing to Boston if the opportunity presents itself. A great deal of conversation focused on three subjects: the future of practices/business of architecture; public engagement important to future success; the importance of the civic realm and architects getting involved. Civic Agenda The Suffolk Downs Urban Design Workshop took place last week, with 80 people at the kickoff panel discussion on February 29 and teams working in BSA Space on March 1. The team structure is as one "uber team" who collectively are coming up with a handful of design concept schemes each intended 4
6 to foreground a particular set of issues that were presented in a public forum on Thursday evening, March 3. The Cities of Boston and Revere are both actively, visibly participating. We started it all with a group site visit including City/BRA officials, design teams, and community leaders. Designing Boston on March 7 focused on the Northern Ave Bridge, and served as the official announcement of an open ideas competition co-sponsored by the City of Boston, BRA, and BSA. The ideas competition is intended to solicit a broad range of participation -- professionals and laypersons alike -- and will inform an RFP to be issued this summer. Proposal for BSA, March 2016 How can Boston s architects contribute to help address the Syrian migrant crisis? The current international migrant crisis is stretching the world s ability to provide decent habitat for interim conditions. The current Syrian crisis is exacerbating the issue as there are 4.3 million Syrian refugees as of December Inspired by the 2016 Venice Biennale theme of architects reporting from the front, the proposed BSA s Migrants Initiative is to raise awareness on the Syrian migrant issues and for Boston s architects to contribute their skills and expertise to alleviate this humanitarian crisis. The goals of the initiative are threefold: 1. Use local architecture expertise to provide support for improving life in Syrian refugee camps. The proposed project is a playground for a refugee camp in partnership with the non-for-profit organization Let me Play who already built playgrounds in refugee camps in Syria and Turkey in partnership with Architects for Humanity, Montreal, Canada. 2. Raise awareness on the migrant crisis within the BSA community. The Initiative could be launched in May at the same time that the Venice Biennale will be held. The playground project aims to engage the broader BSA community including landscape architects, the BSA young architects programs and local architecture schools. 3. Establish a network of Boston architects to support Syrian migrants that are architects. The BSA could sponsor the application of a Syrian architect and his/her family already in the US immigration process to be hosted by the BSA for his/her insertion in the Boston area. The time-frame for launching and completing the design and fund of the playground is nine months, to be completed by December The BSA could present this initiative to other architects associations within the US for using the project as a model to be repeated. 5
7 To: BSA Board of Directors From: Eric White, Executive Director Re: Executive Director s Report Date: March 11, 2016 Administrative Recently we restructured staffing to better position ourselves in moving into the future. Our aim in doing this is to reduce redundancies, clarify job responsibilities and reporting structures, and fulfill major BSA and BSA Foundation goals by creating project-based teams with individual ownership of programs and initiatives. Three senior directors, Pamela overseeing communications/development, Billy overseeing operations, and Ben overseeing systems will manage the individual teams. The restructuring eliminated three positions and we want to recognize Heather Sampson, Russell Marshall and Angela King for their service. Financials We are working with the auditors on the 2015 financial results for the BSA (as well as Foundation, and three AIA chapters). Preliminary results for 2015 financials are good and we believe we finished in the black slightly better than anticipated. Membership & Committees The COTE New England regional summit will be hosted at the BSA Space on June 1 and 2. Representatives from the New England chapters will gather to discuss issues facing the industry, following the successful summit held last year at AIA Maine. Women in Design has posted the call for nominations to the WID Award of Excellence; find details at BSA SCUP tours the Lunder Building at Leslie University with Bruner Cott on March 15 at 8am. The Lunder Building will also be a Common Boston site partner in June. BSA Space The next exhibition, Global Citizen: The Architecture of Moshe Safdie, opens Wednesday, March 16 at 6:00pm. Civic Initiatives (See President s Report) Programs & Events The BSA s professional programming this year has included the latest installment of Conversations on Architecture, featuring Mark Davy, founder of Futurecity, a London-based place making consultancy focused on the development of urban centers spoke. Mark shared his unique and profitable approach to incorporating public art into privately owned projects from their infancy. 6
8 On February 18, 300 emerging professionals from allied industries gathered together at Scholars Bar and Bistro to network and share ideas at the Emerging Professionals Winter Warmer. The event brought together EPs from over 12 organizations in the AEC industry, from marketing professionals, to contractors, to landscape architects. The event provides a unique opportunity to gather together and connect with their peers. The fourth annual BSA Design Awards Gala was held on January 28 and was hosted by WGBH arts editor Jared Bowen. Boston Magazine published a 16-page supplement featuring the design award recipients and mailed to 10,000 readers. This spring the BSA is planning to launch a roundtable series that brings together brings together deans from nearby architecture accredited universities to discuss the future of architecture from the academic viewpoint, and what schools can be doing to better prepare their graduates for architecture in the 21st century. Communications WGBH and WCVB Chronicle each featured segments on the Harleston Parker Medal jury process and promoted the People s Choice Award. Several exhibitions, both past and upcoming have received a great deal of media attention as have the design awards, Gingerbread competition, and the City Hall forum. The spring issue of ArchitectureBoston Framework is now available and features stories on planning which will be the focus for all four issues this year. 21 2016 Governance Committee The purpose of the Governance Committee is to review the bylaws and make recommendations for any changes or updates. A few of the topics the committee should review include: How to handle a tie in the annual election. The strict number of members defined to committees. (For example after the ethics committee is supposed to only have three members, but after the tie in the election we appointed four) Review the total number of Board members and representation Updates or new policies (such as gift acceptance and joint ventures) We recommend the committee consist of 3-5 members of the board with additional outside participants. The last review was done in 2012 and the committee was co-chaired by Matt Kiefer and Ted Landsmark. Other members included: Bill Nigreen (Facilitation for Social Change), Diane Georgopulos, Emily Grandstaff-Rice, Jay Wickersham, Laura Wernick and Mike Davis. 20
