We were able to implement the integration of design thinking into traditional business environments. One of my assignments allowed me to provide a workshop to facilitate creative thinking at the Spanish Court Hotel, Kingston Jamaica, as well as practice contextual research techniques that led to innovative solutions in that office environment. Projects included: The facilitation of a workshop to assist in developing skills of creative problem solving The development of a new business and social network for a researched niche market (buildering) A proposed solution to communicating the value of locally grown food in our communities HOWARD UNIVERSITY (HU) BACH OF ARCHITECTURE Washington, DC 1984 to 1989 Experience: Spring 2013 Graduate Intern (Facilitator) The Spanish Court Hotel, Kingston Jamaica Sales and Marketing Department Facilitation of a creative workshop to assist in developing skills in: Framing, Imaging, and Group interaction as it applies to problem solving within their office environment to Freelance Designer Trading as Cor Design Kingston Jamaica For a Bank with Locations in Jamaica, provided: Kiosk design and related construction drawings as well as implementation supervision an Architectural Program Document for proposed Bank renovations in Jamaica This included site investigations and interviews of staff, reviewing the Client s stated needs, preparation of the document indicating Design Objectives and Scope of Work, a Diagrammatic Analysis of the traffic flow, the Structural, A/C and Electrical Engineer s Report as well as the Preliminary Schedule, and Budget, As Built Drawings and Code requirements for an existing historic building. Provided Architectural Interior Design Services for the renovation of a Bank in Jamaica This included the preparation of a Creative Brief, Design Presentation drawings, Construction drawings and interior specifications keeping to their branding requirements, Site Supervision and coordination with their project managers High End Residential designs in Kingston, Jamaica Associate Professor The University of Technology, Kingston Jamaica to Design Studio to Architectural Drafting II I was an Associate Professor for Senior year students working towards their Bachelor of Arts degree in Architectural Studies at the University of Technology in Kingston, Jamaica. My responsibilities Included: Guiding Students with the semester project (a new library in the historic district of a Caribbean Island) Desk Crit for approximately 10 to 20 Students Member of the team for Studio Pin-Up Crit of approximately 40 Students Grading of Portfolios at the end of the term As a result of my position with the School I was able to guide students with their design concept. Each design was a product of their own hard work which created a sense of accomplishment for both myself and the upcoming designer. Page 1 of 3

2 Experience (cont d): to Project Architect Sorg Architects, Washington DC My time with Sorg was short due to the recession, however, in that time I was introduced to an alternate method of working on projects that required micro management and internal coordination due to the size and type of the projects to which I was assigned. At this office I used AutoCAD Responsibilities included: Preparation of Construction Documents and Detailing Minor presentation preparation to Project Architect Hugh Newell Jacobsen, FAIA, Washington DC Hugh introduced me (through a more formal manner of design)to the importance of light, form, rythm, and careful well thought out detailing, all which when done thoughtfully make a tremendous difference to the end product. My experience with his office also taught me the extreme importance of careful communication between Consultants, the Client, and the General Contractor in remote locations as well as the importance of teamwork outside and within the firm. I used ArchiCad for the drawing program in his office. Responsibilities included: Management of projects which required coordination of the Client s needs with Consultants & Contractors Project Administration, Building Code Analysis, Data Coordination, preparation of Conceptual drawings for Client approval, Preparation of Design Development Drawings (Site and Building Plans, Sections, Elevations, Building Systems, Materials) Coordination with all Consultants (Structural, Electrical, Plumbing as well as Furnishings Supplier). Preparation of Construction Documents and Specifications Coordination of or residential projects conception to project close out (2,500 to 12,000 sf) Site Visits (as required) and all Site Administration Maintained Quality Control and prepared any revisions to Shop Drawings to Architect Marvin D. Goodman and Associates, Kingston, Jamaica I refer to my work at this office as my sink or swim experience. When starting with Marvin s office I had no experience past my internships and was not fluent on any computer program. My skillset was basic and included freehand drawing abilities. I was taught VectorWorks and soon after assigned a couple small additions. Within a year I was then assigned a 10,000 sq ft office building for the U.S.A.I.D. in Kingston, Jamaica which was under a fast track contract. This project required consistent teamwork. We successfully finished the project within the time stipulated and not exceeding the budget requirements of the U.S.A.I.D. These offices have since moved, however the building remains and this was one of the most exhilerating and educational experiences in my professional practice. Generally my responsibilities included: Project Coordination, Site Administration, Visits and administering Site Meetings Preparation of Construction Documents for high end Residential, Educational, Hospitality & Commercial projects Preparation of proposals and bid documents Lead Architect on commercial office complex to house the USAID building in Kingston, Jamaica as well as worked with the Principal of the Firm on other projects such as in the re-planning of the University of Technology s campus, the redevelopment of Port Royal, a proposal for a Craft Market in Port Antonio, Jamaica, and Drawings, Design and Construction Administration for a high end residence in the suburbs of Kingston, Jamaica to Architectural Intern Bryant Associates, PC, Washington, DC Responsibilities included: Hand drafting and coordination of construction documents Assisted in the preparation of design development drawings, graphic presentation and project management Page 2 of 3

3 Experience (cont d): to Architectural Intern Howard University s Physical Facilities management, Planning and Development Division, Washington DC Responsibilities Included: Conducting site visitation on new construction or renovation projects with Senior Architect Hand drafting construction documents Assisting monitoring budget allocations Assisting with the redesigning of office interiors including required renderings and space management Assisting with the preparation and issuing of requisitions for materials, labor and contracts, obtaining permits, and preparing bid information to Architectural Intern Alberga Graham Jamaica, Kingston, Jamaica Responsibilities included: Assisting principal with design development, and preparation of construction drawings Attending meetings with Clients and Senior Architects Successfully initiated the design development of a townhouse complex located in Kingston, Jamaica. The Lower Level houses the Living, Dining and Kitchen Areas and also has a wrap around verandah 8 wide. The upper level consists of a Master Bedroom Suite with Master Bathroom, Study area and private balcony with a view of the view of the city. The families would share a rainwater tank that is below the carport at the entry to the site
