2 photo: Nazar Leskiw photo: Nazar Leskiw Casa da Musica Avenida da Boavista Porto After Porto was selected one of the 2 cultural capitals of Europe in 2001, an international competition started, for a new concert hall to be positioned in the historical centre The shape directly derived from programmatic-piling-up Two shoe-box concert halls were piled first, the other public programs were added onto the shoe-boxes and the remaining spaces between the public functions were filled up with secondary serving spaces, such as foyers, restaurant, terraces, technical spaces and vertical transport A continuous route connects all functions and remaining spaces by stairs, platforms and escalators: the building becomes an architectural adventure The loop creates the possibility to use it for festivals with simultaneous performances Wave-like corrugated glass is used in both the 1300 seat grand auditorium and its smaller 350 seat counterpart Through material transparency each space reveals its contents to the city; showing an array of performances and cultural events photo: Casa da Música Floor area/size m² Main designer, Interior architect Structural engineer Supplier OMA - Rem Koolhaas Inside Outside Arup Lensvelt Porto 2001 / Casa da Música boeboe The building is open every day, Mo-Sat: from 10:00-19:00 h; Sunday : from 10:00-18:00 h, The Casa organizes daily guided tours through the buidling: 11:00 and 16:00h For groups of 15 to 35 people To reserve and more info: visitasguiadas@casadamusicacom Metro: Linha Azul, stop at Matosinhos - Estádio do Dragão Or Linha Vermelha, stop at Estádio do Dragão - Srª da Hora 2

5 Bouça Housing Complex Rua Melo II Porto This project, from 1973, was integrated in the program SAAL in Porto to create social housing for poor people And even though it was made through highly controlled costs, Siza Vieira managed to create a housing complex that is worth studying and visiting In 1977 there where only two blocks completed Nowadays, in 2004, all the blocks were concluded and a new life was given to this complex Instead of having only poor people living here, the low prices and high quality living attracted artists, architects and young couples to settle in With four levels, each block present an articulation in terms of passages that connect the whole complex Together with the housing units there is also commercial spaces and green open spaces 2004, Urban planner SAAL Only the public spaces are public, it's a housing complex Take the subway in Porto till the station "Lapa" it's right there! 5

6 Casa das Artes Rua de Ruben A 4050 Porto The building is located in the gardens of a neo-classical mansion in Porto, dating from the beginning of the 20th century The program for the competition proposed a cinema, an auditorium and an exhibition gallery, as well as the conservation of the gardens as they were This is one of the first built projects of Eduardo Souto Moura It's mainly composed of two parallel granite stone walls, with all the programin the middle With a very minimalistic approach, this building is composed of great building details, reminding some of Mies Van der Rohe's characteristics 1981, Interior architect Eduardo Souto de Moura Secretaria de Estado da Cultura Take a bus from the city center that passes on the street "Rua do Campo Alegre", or at the "Avenida da Boavista" From there it's easy to reach it by foot 6

7 Cinema Batalha Praça da Batalha Porto Situated in the heart of the city of Porto, the proposal of Artur Andrade continues his development of the expressionist line with a curve façade that creates movement and great dynamics in tension with the glass façade that defines the corner of the square in a futuristic style It was a very polemic building when constructed (1946) because of the fascist regime Today it works as a lounge bar, a restaurant and a cinema/theatre 1946 Artur Andrade Câmara Municipal do Porto Right in the centre of the city of Porto Metro stations "Bolhão" or "São Bento" and several buses pass by there Easy to get there 7

8 Children Library Rua de Entre Quintas 4050 Porto This small pavilion located between the trees in the gardens of the Crystal Palace has two levels with a double height vestibule The library appears as an "objet trouvé" in the nature, participating in this spontaneous environment The volume resembles an old train wagon, lifted slightly off the ground turning it into a light and welcoming space The used materials were chosen according to the environment, following the textures and colours of the nature The structure and wall panels are made out of wood and the windows are sheets of transparent polycarbonate located at the height of the children with awesome views to the gardens It's a building that fits perfectly in this natural environment 1997 Paula Santos Câmar Municipal do Porto Monday: Tuesday-Saturday: It's located in the gardens of the Crystal Palace You need to search and follow the signs "Biblioteca Infantil" to reach it 8

9 photo: Luís Ferreira Alves Guindais Funicular Av de Gustavo Eiffel 4000 Porto The Funicular connects the Douro river bank to the high town at the Batalha quarter, through the Guindais slope It is the new way that grasps itself to firm stone and ends in a tower facing the river, such as the old wall which leans on a big rock At both edges of this trajectory there are two stations, each one looking for the adequate relation to each part of the town and its immediate environment areas Both stations are entirely built of white concrete, the most brilliant colourgrade in the North: in the subterraneous station at the mountain in order to better reflect the light entering through the vertical accesses and skylights; in the station at the valley, to make reference to the clear plans of the slope The water which runs along the slope and the line of the valley formed by the rails, controlled by little dams that decrease and sustain its speed, falls freely as a cascade in the interior of the station, being then conducted to the river 2003, Urban planner Adalberto Dias Porto Metro do Porto June - September: Sunday to Wednesday - 08h00-22h00 Thursday to Saturday - 08h00-24h00 October - May: Sunday to Thursday - 08h00-20h00 Friday to Saturday - 08h00-24h00 Right next to the famous bridge Luíz I in the heart of the medieval city 9

10 photo: Carlos Dias Trindade Subway Station Rua de Camões 4000 Porto Built to be the central subway station, "Trindade" has an interface that connects 2 subway lines resulting in a big subway station with commercial spaces The materialization of the architecture is almost the space as all the other subway stations in the center of Porto and it reflects a lot of the northern portuguese way of building White walls, granite floors, ceramic tiles, rough granite stone walls, all of these elements appear in the tradicional constructions and were recreated to fit the contemporary design resulting in some very interesting spaces 2002 Eduardo Souto de Moura Metro do Porto from 600h - 100h but it depends of the months By the subway just get to "Trindade" subway station In the heart of the old city right beside the Trindade Church and the city hall 10

11 Bom Sucesso Market Rua de Caldas Xavier 4150 Porto This building was one of the first buildings to be built in this zone In 1951 the works begin to give shape to this project Its structure of reinforced concrete is made out of pre-casted beams disposed in a radial shape The way the entry of light is designed and works in the interior is absolutely incredible and shows a great sensibility in this subject Even after more than 50 years of use, this building remains almost as good as new All the spatial richness is still present and as a market it has a rich social life photo: Carlos Dias 1952 ARS-Arquitectos Câmara Municipal do Porto From around 700h till 1700h Right next to the square where there is "Casa da Música" It's less than five minute walk from the metro station 11

12 photo: Miguel Coelho photo: Miguel Coelho Casa Ponte da Arrábida Rua do Ouro Porto Arrábida Bridge (Ponte da Arrábida) was designed by Portuguese civil engineer Edgar Cardoso in 1963 The project mentioned here was included in the design as an observation post to watch the construction works on the bridge The structure has been renovated by architect Miguel Tomé and transformed into a restaurant and bar The building is undoubtedly one of the architectural gems of Porto, but still undervalued Perhaps this is due to the fact that the initial project was designed by a civil engineer, although one of the most notable in photo: Miguel Coelho 1963 Associate architect Edgar Cardoso Miguel Tomé Miguel_Coelho 12

13 photo: Traço Alternativo photo: Traço Alternativo Urban Renewal Aliados Avenue Avenida dos Aliados Porto The Project for the Avenida dos Aliados surges from the need to build, in that place, three metro stations that are practically contiguous: São Bento, Aliados and Trindade The intervention opted for the reformulation of the existing vegetation, it privileged the thick arboreal but freed the ground from flower beds and other obstacles which restricted the use of the Avenue located in the heart of the city as a large public space, as it happens in countless cities, responding to a use that was, in fact, already in practice, although in precarious conditions The project redesigned the urban furniture but re-used the old existing street lamps On the upper side of the Avenue, near the City Hall, a water mirror was built, surrounded by benches, chairs and trees 2005 Main designer, Eduardo Souto de Moura uralguides photo: Traço Alternativo 13
