2 photo: Nazar Leskiw photo: Nazar Leskiw Casa da Musica Avenida da Boavista Porto After Porto was selected one of the 2 cultural capitals of Europe in 2001, an international competition started, for a new concert hall to be positioned in the historical centre The shape directly derived from programmatic-piling-up Two shoe-box concert halls were piled first, the other public programs were added onto the shoe-boxes and the remaining spaces between the public functions were filled up with secondary serving spaces, such as foyers, restaurant, terraces, technical spaces and vertical transport A continuous route connects all functions and remaining spaces by stairs, platforms and escalators: the building becomes an architectural adventure The loop creates the possibility to use it for festivals with simultaneous performances Wave-like corrugated glass is used in both the 1300 seat grand auditorium and its smaller 350 seat counterpart Through material transparency each space reveals its contents to the city; showing an array of performances and cultural events photo: Casa da Música Floor area/size m² Main designer, Architect Interior architect Structural engineer Supplier OMA - Rem Koolhaas Inside Outside ARUP Lensvelt Porto 2001 / Casa da Música boeboe The building is open every day, Mo-Sat: from 10:00-19:00 h; Sunday : from 10:00-18:00 h, The Casa organizes daily guided tours through the buidling: 11:00 and 16:00h For groups of 15 to 35 people To reserve and more info: visitasguiadas@casadamusicacom Metro: Linha Azul, stop at Matosinhos - Estádio do Dragão Or Linha Vermelha, stop at Estádio do Dragão - Srª da Hora 2

6 Bouça Housing Complex Rua Melo II Porto This project, from 1973, was integrated in the program SAAL in Porto to create social housing for poor people And even though it was made through highly controlled costs, Siza Vieira managed to create a housing complex that is worth studying and visiting In 1977 there where only two blocks completed Nowadays, in 2004, all the blocks were concluded and a new life was given to this complex Instead of having only poor people living here, the low prices and high quality living attracted artists, architects and young couples to settle in With four levels, each block present an articulation in terms of passages that connect the whole complex Together with the housing units there is also commercial spaces and green open spaces 2004 Architect, Urban planner SAAL Only the public spaces are public, it's a housing complex Take the subway in Porto till the station "Lapa" it's right there! 6

7 Casa das Artes Rua de Ruben A 4050 Porto The building is located in the gardens of a neo-classical mansion in Porto, dating from the beginning of the 20th century The program for the competition proposed a cinema, an auditorium and an exhibition gallery, as well as the conservation of the gardens as they were This is one of the first built projects of Eduardo Souto Moura It's mainly composed of two parallel granite stone walls, with all the programin the middle With a very minimalistic approach, this building is composed of great building details, reminding some of Mies Van der Rohe's characteristics 1981 Architect, Interior architect Secretaria de Estado da Cultura Take a bus from the city center that passes on the street "Rua do Campo Alegre", or at the "Avenida da Boavista" From there it's easy to reach it by foot 7

8 Manoel de Oliveira Cinema House Rua de Viana de Lima 4150 Porto The Cinema House represents a significant change in the formal expression of A change of style that approaches this work to the formal expression of the architecture of Siza Vieira This building pretends to be similar to the surrounding houses, having some distortions to fit better on the plot The overall image resembles to the lens of the camera, with dynamic eyes like the insects, searching for the views to the see in between the buildings 1998 Architect, Artist, Interior architect, Landscape architect, Urban planner Câmara Municipal do Porto Right now [November 2007] it's on restoration because it was left abandoned since it was finished By bus (number 78) on the "Avenida Marechal Gomes da Costa" till "Praça do Império" and after that by foot following the street "Rua de Bartolomeu Velho" 8

9 Artists Workshop rua da lada 4050 Porto The building has 4 ateliers for young artists Its location, right next to the river "Douro" has a wonderful view of the "D Luiz I" Bridge, the river and the south coast of the city of "Gaia" This project integrates a system of platforms and granite walls in stories and stairs that connects the building to the street at the ground level The great sensibility and beautifulness of the urban tissue and it's great presence in the site conducted to the option of creating a building that is discreet The object consists in an association of two planes in "sandwich", with glass walls over a platform Project is not public! 1996 Architect Virgínio Moutinho Young Artists Right next to the main Bridge in Porto "D Luiz I" and it stands on the top of the tunnel that gives access to the old city Several Buses to get there and with the "Funicular dos Guindais", the elevator 9

10 Housing Block Rua do Teatro Porto This housing block situated on the western part of Porto, in front of the Atlantic ocean is a conceptual reinvention of the traditional urban houses of the XVIII century Instead of a stone structure, here the structure is in steel but is completely visible and separated from the other elements But at the same time there are traditional materials that were used on the façades, transposing the modern architecture into a more site related project Project is not public! 1995 Architect, Interior architect, Urban planner On the western part of Porto called "Foz" it's easy to reach From the avenue "Avenida do Brasil" that follows the coast line 10

11 photo: Carlos Dias Trindade Subway Station Rua de Camões 4000 Porto Built to be the central subway station, "Trindade" has an interface that connects 2 subway lines resulting in a big subway station with commercial spaces The materialization of the architecture is almost the space as all the other subway stations in the center of Porto and it reflects a lot of the northern portuguese way of building White walls, granite floors, ceramic tiles, rough granite stone walls, all of these elements appear in the tradicional constructions and were recreated to fit the contemporary design resulting in some very interesting spaces 2002 Architect Metro do Porto from 600h - 100h but it depends of the months By the subway just get to "Trindade" subway station In the heart of the old city right beside the Trindade Church and the city hall 11

12 Burgo Tower Avenida da Boavista Porto This office complex is located in the Avenida da Boavista, the biggest straight line avenue in that extends from "Casa da Música" till the Sea in West This complex opens a large square between the two buildings, one horizontal and the other vertical The square is occupied by a big sculpture by the Porto architect/sculptor Nadir de Afonso The buildings were drawn with very simple shapes, following the influences of Mies and the Chicago buildings The main interest about the building is its façade Its skin is composed out of a single module that wraps all the volumes That module was studied so it could fit on 2 different ways creating a glass façade and an opaque façade Public access unknown! 13 Commercial Building in Boavista Avenida da Boavista 4050 Porto The building is designed like a succession of boxes disposed randomly over a platform From the traditional platform-like style building that Souto Moura uses to make, now he rethinks the concept of the box-like architecture, transforming it into a composition of boxes that generate an urban façade over the avenue 2008 Architect, Interior architect Depending of the stores The building is located in the Avenida da Boavista right in front of the east entry to the city park There are several Buses going down that avenue 13

14 photo: Traço Alternativo photo: Traço Alternativo Urban Renewal Aliados Avenue Avenida dos Aliados Porto The Project for the Avenida dos Aliados surges from the need to build, in that place, three metro stations that are practically contiguous: São Bento, Aliados and Trindade The intervention opted for the reformulation of the existing vegetation, it privileged the thick arboreal but freed the ground from flower beds and other obstacles which restricted the use of the Avenue located in the heart of the city as a large public space, as it happens in countless cities, responding to a use that was, in fact, already in practice, although in precarious conditions The project redesigned the urban furniture but re-used the old existing street lamps On the upper side of the Avenue, near the City Hall, a water mirror was built, surrounded by benches, chairs and trees 2005 Main designer, Architect Architect ArchitecturalGuides photo: Traço Alternativo 14

16 photo: Nazar Leskiw Instituto CUF Rua Fonte das Sete Bicas Porto An exterior walkway was included, allowing at present or at a later stage, the inclusion of the necessary emergency exits The Building acquires a greater dimension with the separation between staff and public, the users acquire greater sense of space towards the exterior, whether they are static or in motion within the building The building's original dense concept is altered to an unity feeling, this is achieved by a shading game that is only visible at close proximity - designed by the plastic artist Angelo de Sousa - this shading game protects the extensive glass structure from excessive sunlight and also gives the building a unity feeling opposed to the concept's dense 2014 Main designer, Architect Architect Artist Carlos Prata Architect Nuno Barbosa Ângelo de Sousa Nazar photo: Nazar Leskiw 16
