1 Situated on the edge of the Filder plateau, surrounded by woodland, lies Vaihingen. Progress and innovation on the one hand, tradition and rural heritage on the other in Vaihingen these opposites merge into a consistent whole: As site of university institutes and other research facilities and a wide range of service and production companies, Vaihingen today is an important base for science and business in the Stuttgart region. At the same time, spruce half-timber houses, small shopping streets, and trees and fountains in the town centre have preserved a friendly small-town atmosphere. Vaihingen s attractiveness as a place to live and work is explained precisely by this balance between the conservative and the new. With more than 45,000 inhabitants, Vaihingen is Stuttgart s second largest suburban district after Bad Cannstatt and, with 2,089 hectares, the biggest in terms of area. 1

Two levels with shops of all kinds and friendly cafés whet the appetite for an extended shopping spree. Right next to this impressive example of modern architecture is the Häussler Public Forum, including the clubrooms of the Stuttgart Music School and a big public auditorium. On the opposite side of the street, on the former site of a fruit juice factory, DaimlerChrysler has built its Global Training Centre, where service people from all over the world are schooled. In 2005 the rehabilitation of the Alte Kelter (old fruit press building) also was completed; it now serves as a venue for Stuttgart s associations and clubs and as a culture forum. 2 3

3 For children and older youths there are a great many places to go to play and have fun: the Vaihingen Children s and Youth Centre, the Büsnau-Lauchhau- Lauchäcker children s and youth facilities, the Rohr Youth Club, the Vaihingen adventure playground, the Möhringen and Elsental youth farms everybody can find the right place and the right program of activities to spend their free time. 6 The recreation opportunities in Vaihingen cater to a broad spectrum of personal interests. Sports fans can choose between 27 clubs and pursue any kind of sport from volleyball through squash to track and field athletics. In the Rosental open-air swimming pool, a huge 100-meter-long slide entices not only youngsters to enjoy the water. And if you want to improve your fitness on one of the keep-fit trails or simply enjoy a walk in the fresh air it is never very far for nature lovers to the woods all around Vaihingen. 4 Education and research 9 bl 9 Grounds of the university in Vaihingen bl Campus bm Lecture hall It took two years of construction work in the Pfaffenwald section of Vaihingen before the State Materials Testing Institute (MPA) could relocate to Vaihingen in 1959, the first institute of the University of Stuttgart to do so. Today some 20,000 people work, study and do research at the various institutes. Together with the institutes of the Fraunhofer Gesellschaft, the Max- Planck-Gesellschaft, the German Aerospace Centre, Stuttgart Media University (HdM) and the Training Centre Southwest of Deutsche Telekom they make Vaihingen the science and education district of Stuttgart. bm 7

5 Business and transportation bn bn Synergy Park Stuttgart bo Colorado Tower in Synergy Park bp Stuttgarter Engineering Park (STEP) Vaihingen is home of the state capital s biggest industrial estate, the Synergy Park Stuttgart. Around 700 enterprises from the services sector, retail/wholesale, publishing and manufacturing have located here. In addition, in the Unterer Grund area the Stuttgart Engineering Park (STEP) has emerged. Around 3,000 employees work there at 90 enterprises of the telecommunication, engineering and software industries. bo The building of bypass roads has appreciably reduced the once heavy traffic in the centre of Vaihingen, due to the proximity of the A8 and A81 motorways: Since 1999 the North-South Road and the East Bypass with the Österfeld Tunnel, the Nesenbachtal Bridge and the Hengstäcker Tunnel reduce traffic in the centre of Vaihingen by some 30,000 vehicles daily. Via the Stuttgart-Vaihingen junction, motorists directly access the motorways. Vaihingen is also optimally served by public transit: two subway lines and three suburban rail lines (U1, U6 / S1, S2, S3) connect the centres of Stuttgart and Vaihingen on a regular basis. bp 8 9

6 Vaihingen is connected with the suburbs Möhringen, Plieningen and Sillenbuch by the U3 and U8 lines. Stuttgart Airport can be reached very quickly by suburban railway or the A8 superhighway. Vaihingen today is a popular place to live, work and learn not least of all due to this favourable infrastructure. The first documentary evidence of Vaihingen dates back to the year But Celtic and Roman finds point to earlier settlements. The Reichsdeputationshauptschluss ( Mediatization ) of 1803 handed Vaihingen over to the Kingdom of Württemberg, making it an independent town. At the time, Vaihingen had a population of 1,300, mostly peasants and artisans. The largest occupational group was quarrymen and pavers. 7 bt Half-timber house on Vaihinger Markt bu City park cl Vaihingen s town hall bu bt The Gäubahn regional railway brought vigorous economic growth beginning in Vaihingen became a traffic junction on the Filder plateau. A streetcar line took passengers to Vaihingen since 1926; two years later the line was extended to Rohr. As a result the two towns became attractive business and residential locations and merged in In the years following the incorporation of Rohr, Vaihingen grew to a population of nearly 17,000 and was thus bigger than many towns in Württemberg. Its hopes of attaining municipal privileges were dashed, however: Reich Governor Murr decided to incorporate Vaihingen, together with Möhringen, Plieningen, Birkach and Stammheim, into Stuttgart on April 1, 1942 it meant the end of municipal independence. cl Vaihingen s proximity to the big city was its ruin during the Second World War: Stuttgart was the target of Allied air strikes since 1940; in the last two years of the war there were air-raid warnings almost every day. By war s end large sections of Vaihingen had been destroyed. These difficult years were followed by rapid reconstruction. Vaihingen grew by two new quarters, Büsnau and Dürrlewang. The construction of multistorey public housing apartments and single- and multifamily houses created new living space there for the growing population. In view of the big housing requirements, in the late 1960s a city-owned site in the Lauchhau area was developed for residential purposes. Lauchhau formerly was part of the Vaihingen municipal forest, later on a municipal hop garden and then a fruit tree farm. 13

8 cm cn Construction began in March 1968 and the first families moved into the 438 homes in April The youngest residential area, Lauchäcker, began taking shape in the year 2000 on the western edge of Vaihingen, in the immediate neighbourhood of Lauchhau and the university. In a very short time, Lauchäcker has developed into a popular residential area especially for young families. cm Attractive homes in the Lauchäcker area cn Lauchäcker home to many young families Officially, Vaihingen uses the Stuttgart city coat of arms featuring the horse. However, to this day the district has preserved its own coat of arms for historical reasons. The upper half shows the old Vaihingen coat of arms with the broken wheel of St. Catherine the patron saint of Esslingen Hospital and its lower half shows the traditional coat of arms of local nobleman Diezo von Ror, the former coat of arms of Rohr. German-French town twinning Since 1985 Vaihingen is officially linked with the French town of Melun by a twinning agreement. The capital of the Department Seine-et-Marne, located 50 kilometres southeast of Paris, has around 40,000 residents, which makes it about the same size as Vaihingen. But the common points between both towns extend far beyond mere formalities. More than ten meetings annually at all levels and in all areas document that this twinning has given rise to a vital partnership between the citizens of both towns. 15
