1 CA FOSCARI Summer 2013 Time: Tuesdays, 10:00 am 12:30 pm & Thursdays, *9:30 am 12:30 pm Syllabus link: LECTURE ROOM: Aula 0E Instructors: Professor Frank Fehrenbach, Professor Joseph Connors, Caitlin Henningsen (TF) Venetian Art and Architecture in the High Renaissance Course description This course focuses on the great masters of sixteenth-century art and architecture in Venice, in particular Giovanni Bellini, Titian, Tintoretto, Mauro Codussi, Jacopo Sansovino, and Palladio. Regular visits to Venetian churches, museums, and monuments will help students to develop a deeper understanding of the urban space and the dialogue among artists in the High Renaissance. Formal requirements Attendance at and participation in all lectures, on-site visits, and sections; 1 final paper; 1 midterm exam; 1 oral presentation, 2 reading responses. Required readings Deborah Howard, Architectural History of Venice (2004) Peter Humfrey, Painting in Renaissance Venice (1997) Additional required readings will be accessible on your USB stick. Students will be expected to consult the Touring Club Italiano map of Venice (green cover!). Readings All recommended readings will be available on your USB stick. Field Trips Biblioteca Marciana, Santa Maria dei Miracoli, Gallerie dell Accademia, San Zaccaria, Basilica dei Frari, Scuola di San Rocco and Scuola di San Giovanni Evanelista, Santissimi Giovanni e Paolo, San Giorgio Maggiore, Redentore, Arsenale. Grading Presentation 20% Each student is required to prepare a focused presentation of approximately 7-10 minutes on a painting, sculpture, monument, etc. These presentations will then be given on site, either during the Thursday class meeting or in section. During the first week of class each student will be assigned an object. Participation 15% Active participation is expected in section and, when appropriate, during lecture. Reading Responses 15% Two short ( words) reports on reading, to be submitted via to joseph_connors@harvard.edu and cfhenningsen@gmail.com by Monday, June 24 and Monday, July 1 at 10:00 a.m.

2 Midterm exam 25% The midterm exam will take place on Friday, July 5 at 10:00 a.m. Final Paper 25% The final paper is an analysis of a single painting. You must discuss the topic and outline of your paper with your teaching fellow as you develop your ideas. Please submit to cfhenningsen@gmail.com on Saturday, July 20 by 5:00 p.m. Policies and procedures Students must attend all lessons, any absence must be registered by the CFHSS office ( cafoscariharvard@unive.it ). Students are expected to behave properly in class: eating and drinking are not allowed. Cell phones are not allowed. Active participation is recommended. Readings must be done in advance so as to stimulate lively debates in class. Academic dishonesty, including plagiarism, is not tolerated.
