3 Chairmans Report Voorsittersverslag INTRODUCTION OBJECTIVES AND PERFORMANCE INLEIDING DOELWITTE EN PRESTASIE The governance structures implemented by the company and the strive towards improved communication with stakeholders lay the platform for a resilient year in terms of the achievement of the goals of the company. The implementation of a dedicated marketing department has managed to grow the marketing initiatives exponentially year by year and make a meaningful contribution to the good price level of the fibre across all sectors. SUSTAINABILITY AND RISK The continuous monitoring of the financial, environmental and economic risks remain vitally important, not only for the company, but for the industry as a whole. The upward trend in mohair production continued during 2013 with a year on year increase of 3.4%. The price levels for the 2013 year continued to be buoyant across all sectors of the clip, with positive economic spin-offs for mohair producers. THE COMPANY AND BOARD OF DIRECTORS The Board consists of 10 non-executive directors. The position of chairman and general manager is separated and the board continues to make use of several committees to assist the board in discharging its responsibilities. The directors are no longer remunerated in terms of a honorarium across the board, with only the chairman and vice-chairman receiving a honorarium. All board members are remunerated in the form of a day fee for work performed as well as a reimbursive travel payment for business kilometers travelled. The term of office of Messrs A.R. Hobson and A. Oelofse expired, with Messrs M. Shires and A.A.P. Greeff being appointed in their stead. Mr Colin Martins replaced Mr Jurie Martins as the farm worker s representative, whom sadly passed away during the year. Mr R. du Randt continued to act as chairman and Mr P. van der Vyver as vice-chairman during the year. The marketing initiatives embarked upon continued to focus on the main objective of the company, which is the marketing and promotion of the mohair fibre. The company continued to focus strongly on strategic alliances with global role-players within the mohair industry. The design and registration of a new trademark identity for mohair was concluded during the year, laying the platform for the roll-out of a new consumer facing mark. The presence at tradeshows, both locally and internationally, continued to be a strong focus of the marketing initiatives. Tradeshows are carefully selected and the stands designed to focus on the specific target audience. The collaboration with international universities continued during 2013, with preliminary discussions initiated in China to form a collaboration to reach the younger generation and design fraternity. The second international Mohair Summit took place during the latter half of 2013 in Jansenville, Eastern Cape. The summit created the platform for dialogue and healthy debate amongst industry role-players. The continued communication with role-players within the industry as well as the media and consumers across the globe remained a high priority, with the role of social media playing an ever increasing role. OUR PEOPLE The dedication of the staff to perform their duties to the advantage of the industry has to be commended. With a small team we have managed to execute the objectives of the company with great success. CONCLUSION The good spirit of co-operation between the industry organizations have to be mentioned, with issues affecting the broader industry being discussed amongst all role-players. I wish to thank my fellow directors for their continued support and dedication throughout the year. Die opwaartste neiging in sybokhaarproduksie het gedurende 2013 voortgeduur, met n jaar op jaar styging van 3.4%. 4 The market & production Die mark en produksie The 2013 Mohair market was an excellent year for producers and the industry in the entire industry. The market delivered continual results during 2013 with market indicators proving at its best for prices achieved during this year in real terms. The season kicked off on a very positive note with 6% higher than the openings auction of 2012 with a clear indication that the kid market will be in strong demand during the season. Prices increased continued during the summer season and closed at 20% higher than the opening auction. These tendencies continued during the winter season with a 20% higher opening market offering than the 2012 offering. The kid s sector an young goats excelled during the winter season whilst the adult sector achieved good levels during the summer. The excellent prices during the winter season resulted in an increase in the average market indicator to R 117,60 per kg which was higher than the average market indicator of the summer season of R 112,09.het. The average market indicator halted at R which was an increase of 25 for the 2012 year. The actual average price for the year was R in comparison to the R for Exports for the year amounted to 3.65 million kg s which was 13,7% higher than 2012 with an increase in the imports from Italy, China and Japan. Imports increased by 15.2% from 2012 to million kg s in This vertical tendency during production in 2013, with a total production of 2,4 million kg totalled an increase of 3.4% since Die 2013 sybokhaarmark was n uitstekende jaar vir produsente en die bedryf in sy geheel. 5 Marketing highlights- South Africa Bemarkingshoogtepunte - Suid-Afrika DESIGN INDABA Mohair South Africa once again exhibited at Design Indaba, South Africa s premier design show. The exhibit focused on Mohair products for the home showcasing coveted items such as the internationally renowned Casalis poufs and a couch covered in luxurious 100% cobalt blue mohair velour. The exhibit also provided a sneak peek into the use of Mohair in men s suiting. As in previous years the focus remains on showcasing the many different facets of Mohair from fashion and homeware to hand knitting and crafting PORT ELIZABETH MUSEUM Mohair South Africa was given the opportunity to put up an educational display in the Port Elizabeth Museum. With the many school groups that frequent the museum, the process was explained from source to shelf. SUNSHINE COAST TRAIL RUN As Mohair South Africa uses every opportunity to market the benefits of Mohair socks, they joined the action at the Sunshine Coast Trail Run held in the Nanaga area. Athletes were put through their paces running through the Alexandria dune fields, the largest of its kind in the southern hemisphere. Instead of medals, every runner received a pair of Mohair socks and Mohair lucky draw prizes were very popular. KIRKWOOD WILDLIFE FESTIVAL For the second year, Mohair South Africa set up a dedicated Mohair tent and offered the platform to ten manufacturers who exhibited Mohair products with true character and style. Festival goers were able to experience Mohair s natural beauty and luxury amidst a buzz of activity, catering for the whole family. Visitors were delighted with the variety on offer, including an array of Mohair products as well as an interactive yarn art installation. URBAN RUN The Urban Run is a charity fundraising event that starts and finishes on the Donkin Reserve. Mohair South Africa set up a challenging obstacle and sponsored Mohair socks to athletes running through the inner city of Port Elizabeth. It is a popular event on the social calendar of families in the Port Elizabeth area and attracts around 3000 runners. KNOW YOUR ARTIST Mohair South Africa was part of a programme of the Mandela Bay Development Agency which promoted the artists of Nelson Mandela Bay at the iconic Athenaeum. The week was jam-packed with innovative workshops by four well-established South African designers, who worked with 20 Eastern Cape crafters, helping them to develop products for an exhibition, while enhancing their skills. Mohair South Africa sponsored yarn and needles for all participating crafters, giving them the opportunity to work with Mohair and to create magical pieces that were exhibited on the last day of the week. GLITTER KNITTER VISITS SOUTH AFRICA Mohair South Africa hosted a knitting workshop in Port Elizabeth with the famous knitwear specialist Steven Be, better known as the Glitter Knitter from Minneapolis in the States. After a chance meeting in 2012 at Vogue Knitting Live in Chicago, Steven Be and the Mohair South Africa marketing team planned Steven s visit to South Africa to coincide with Design Indaba. The Port Elizabeth workshop was packed with ladies eager to learn and starved for inspiration. DESIGN INDABA Sybokhaar Suid-Afrika het weereens n uitstalling gehad by Design Indaba, Suid-Afrika se top ontwerpskou. Die uitstalling het gefokus op Sybokhaarprodukte vir die huis met gesogte items soos die internasionaal erkende Casalis-poef en n rusbank oorgetrek met luukse 100% kobaltblou Sybokhaarveloer. Die uitstalling het ook n voorafblik gegee oor die gebruik van Sybokhaar in manspakke. 6 SPIN EXPO, SHANGHAI MODE GAKUEN UNIVERSITY, JAPAN SPIN EXPO, SHANGHAI STEVEN BE BREIWERK, MINNEAPOLIS Mohair South Africa continued their presence at Spin Expo and hit the headlines as Mohair featured prominently in all the trend forecasts and trend areas. Mohair was showcased in various forms, from raw materials to yarns, interesting fabric swatches and designer garments. Sponsors were delighted to donate yarns to be used on the stand and the show once again proved that mohair is in demand as a fashion fibre. Important business connections were made that have cemented relationships towards possible collaborations into SALON DE MOBILE, MILAN This Milanese Furniture fair is held annually and is the largest of its kind across the world. Mohair South Africa supported Casalis, an innovative fabric design company from Belgium. Their products are mostly used in commercial applications dealing with international designers and architects worldwide. Casalis dedicated most of their stand to Mohair, which included the new wall-to-wall mohair carpeting range, as well as customized pieces, woven with a new weaving technique and made from 100% mohair yarn. The stand was extremely busy and trade brisk. NEOCON, CHICAGO NeoCon is a trade show for large commercial contracts where thousands of innovative products and resources for corporations, hospitality, healthcare, retail government and institutional and residential interiors are showcased in more than 700 showrooms. The marketing team joined the Schellens and Vescom Mohair Velour group at their stand, and attended several interesting research and development workshops, which aided their marketing perspective going forward. STEVEN BE KNITTING, MINNEAPOLIS With over 56 million crafters in the US, and a clear focus for the Mohair South Africa marketing team, they joined Steven Be at his yarn emporium and studio, The Yarn Garage in Minneapolis. Steven Be is a fibre artisan that is armed with a wealth of experience, a daring sense of style, and a firm belief in the transformative power of creativity that knitting or crocheting offers to all who are brave enough to push the boundaries. The day included knitting workshops, mohair presentations and an opportunity to interact with the American knitting design fraternity. Mohair South Africa will continue to collaborate with Steven Be going forward. Mohair South Africa supports a designer development programme at Mode Gakuen University in Nagoya Japan; the perfect opportunity for future designers to get their hands on this luxurious and durable fibre; putting South Africa on the map for all the right reasons. Mohair South Africa supplies third year students with material, yarn and information; giving them a chance to design a collection of garments as well as participate in the annual design competition. With a cutting edge learning environment, graduates are snapped up by top designers from around the globe, including Zara, H&M, Mark Jacobs and Nike just to name a few. The prize for the best design is an all-expenses paid trip to South Africa, where students are taken on a Mohair tour and are educated about the process from farm to final product. The winning entries are also exhibited at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) Collective Fashion show each year. NIHON VOGUE, JAPAN In an effort to stimulate interest for mohair among young consumers in Japan, Mohair South Africa launched a knitwear design competition with Nihon Vogue in Tokyo. The competition was advertised across Vogue s six publications and the 23 finalists were all present at the South African Embassy in Tokyo, where the award ceremony was hosted. The prize for the best design is a Mohair tour where the winner will be educated about the process from farm to final product. LINEAPIU The Foundation Lineapiu Italy launched a major project, to which MSA contributed. It was dedicated to the construction of their archives in a showroom in Italy. The project was aimed at organizing and making available the amount of research on materials and yarns used by the company over the years. It offers a source of information to the world of fashion for professional designers, researchers, clients, students and journalists. Sybokhaar Suid-Afrika het hul teenwoordigheid voortgesit by Spin Expo en die hoofopskrifte gevul met Sybokhaar wat prominent voorgekom het in al die modetendens vooruitskoue en topmode-areas. Dis die perfekte geleentheid vir toekomstige ontwerpers om kennis te maak met hierdie luukse en duursame vesel en Suid-Afrika op die kaart te plaas om die regte redes. Sybokhaar Suid-Afrika voorsien die derdejaarstudente van materiaal, breigare/weefgare en inligting en bied aan hulle die geleentheid om n versameling kledingstukke te ontwerp en ook aan die jaarlikse ontwerpkompetisie deel te neem. Gegradueerdes aan die voorpunt van die opvoedkunde-omgewing word opgeraap deur top ontwerpers wêreldwyd soos Zara, H&M, Mark Jacobs en Nike om net n paar te noem. Die prys vir die beste ontwerp is n alle-uitgawes-betaalde reis na Suid-Afrika, waar studente geneem word op n Sybokhaartoer en geleer word omtrent die proses van die plaas na die finale produk. Die wen-inskrywings word elke jaar vertoon by die Nelson Mandela Metropolitaanse Universiteit (NMMU) se Collective-modeskou. NIHON VOGUE, JAPAN Ten einde belangstelling in Sybokhaar te stimuleer onder die jong verbruikers in Japan, het Sybokhaar Suid-Afrika n kompetisie vir breidragontwerp bekendgestel saam met Nihon Vogue in Tokio. Die kompetisie is geadverteer in al ses Vogue-publikasies en die 23 finaliste was almal teenwoordig by die Suid-Afrikaanse Ambassade in Tokio, waar die toekenningseremonie plaasgevind het. Die prys vir die beste ontwerp is n Sybokhaartoer waar die wenner geleer sal word omtrent die proses van die plaas tot by die finale produk. LINEAPIU Die Lineapiu-stigting in Italië het n belangrike projek bekendgestel waartoe Sybokhaar Suid-Afrika bygedra het. Die projek het gefokus op die konstruksie van hul argief in n vertoonlokaal in Italië. Die projek het die navorsing oor die materiaal en weefgare/breigare wat die maatskappy oor die jare gebruik het, georganiseer en beskikbaar gestel. 7 STATUTORY REQUIREMENTS AND MEMBERSHIP The company continued to obtain critical industry statistics via the appointed administrator under the statutory measures. The company was able to once again attend the annual IWTO conference which was held in Biella, Italy, in 2013 due to the continued valuable membership of the IWTO. RESEARCH In order to improve the quality of delivered clip and to support the industry by means of providing solutions to health related matters in Angora goats, a budget of R was approved for scientific research for the year The field trials for the heartwater vaccine has been initiated as scheduled in The tests have been conducted under controlled conditions and the results recorded were extremely positive. The heartwater vaccine field trials are still in progress. The frozen semen project has been put on hold until more appropriate storage facilities have been obtained and is scheduled to continue in QUALITY STANDARDS The company continues to be the official administrative body for the following very important international competitions: Daidoh, Miyuki and Ermenegildo Zegna. The sustainable guidelines will continue to play a vital role within the industry. The sustainable guidelines are also incorporated into the Miyuki competition, truly cementing the future of the guidelines as a critical component of the industry. TRAINING The bursary scheme at Grootfontein Agricultural College was continued during the year, as was the classing training at Marlow and Winterberg. The continued involvement of the company with the tertiary training institutions fashion and textile departments is evidently very successful and is creating prosperous platforms for the participating individuals. These successes have consequently created a spill-over opportunity to the interior design departments, where students are encouraged to incorporate Mohair in their designs. The collaborations between Mohair South Africa and their partnering tertiary institutions currently includes the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in Port Elizabeth, the Mode Gakuen University in Japan and Nottingham Trent University in the UK. BLACK ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT All Black Economic Empowerment initiatives are driven by the Empowerment Trust of the Mohair Industry and the Trust is responsible for reporting on all of its activities. Die bevrore semenprojek is gestaak tot tyd en wyl meer toepaslike stoorfasiliteite verkry kan word en is geskeduleer om in 2014 voort te gaan. GEHALTESTANDAARDE Die maatskappy gaan voort om die amptelike administratiewe liggaam te wees vir die volgende baie belangrike internasionale kompetisies: Daidoh, Miyuki en Ermenegildo Zegna.
