11 Workshop for Wise Women A FREE PUBLIC program celebrating Women s History Month for adults and students which includes a lecture, gallery exhibit and buffet dinner banquet. HARRIET TUBMAN MEET THE WOMAN LECTURE Actress Gwendolyn Briley Strand discussed the life of this remarkable woman and provide a Power Point photographic p exhibit made possible with a grant by the Maryland Humanities Council and other sponsors. HARRIET TUBMAN HISTORY DAY GALLERY EXHIBIT The Gallery Exhibit featured 2009 Charles County Board of Education History Day projects by local students celebrating Women s History Month. A Tribute to Harriet Tubman Celebrating Women s History Month Mar. 12, 2009, Bel Alton H.S. Alumni Association

14 HEALTH OF WOMEN Major Health and Aging Issues 1. Critical shortage of physicians/specialists 2. Access to quality healthcare and dental care for uninsured or underinsured 3. Mothers receiving no or late prenatal care 4. Mental health and substance abuseneeds 5. Obesity related diseases, such as heart disease, stroke and diabetes, and cancer among leading causes of death. 21 Working The Commission conducted an informal Women s Day survey to learn about access to health Celebration care and education needs of working women. Charles County Commission for Women Exhibited at the Charles County Working Women s Day Celebration hosted by the Charles County Chamber of Commerce on April, 2008 at the Waldorf Jaycees. The exhibit booth was organized by Education Committee Chair Trena Jones, Rosemary Raimen and Claudia Hansley. Forty five (45) working women completed a survey and indicated a need for more information on: health & nutrition financial fitness care giving ing Family matters smallbusiness workshops
22 EDUCATION AND JOBS FOR WOMEN Major Issues 1. Rising unemployment due to economic downturn and layoffs 2. Financial insecurity and unmanageable debt resulting in foreclosures, bankruptcy, and defaults 3. Lower education savings bl balances, access to student tloans 4.
