Sal s ability to quickly classify his audience using simple shapes and colours was particularly impressive! It was unfortunate that a number of members were away and unable to hear one of the best speakers we have had so far this year. Though the closure of the IGA supermarket for renovations no doubt reduced the number of passers-by, active selling from our members resulted in us clearing most of the stock provided. I think the Cancer Council will be well pleased. It was particularly poignant for Louise and I to assist as earlier in the week we attended the funeral of a cousin who died of cancer. A District 9810 Youth seminar will be held on Friday 16 September and a Social Media seminar will be held, in two versions, on Friday 14 October and Saturday 15 October. Details are available on the District 9810 website. All members are invited to attend these seminars that so far this year have proved to be very well worthwhile attending. Our newest member Mary Cunnington has suffered infection complications following the removal of a melanoma. Hopefully her stay in hospital will be short.

Following the visit by District Governor Carol Lawton a week or so ago, DG Carol has written to us with her comments on what she saw and heard.

The Beaumaris Farmers Market is Moving This Thursday we will be having a film night at the Dendy Cinema in Brighton.

Whilst the critics have not been kind I am sure the film will provide a spectacle that will have us cringing in our seats.

From next month onwards the Beaumaris Farmers Market will be moving to Beaumaris North Primary School. A map of the layout is included on our website.

5 This Weeks Speaker: Sal Perna - Topic: From Murder to Mails Mr Sal Perna was appointed as Victoria s first Racing Integrity Commissioner on 1 March 2010 and has had his term extended until February The Racing Integrity Commissioner is an independent statutory officer, appointed by the Governor in Council, under the Racing Act 1958 (Vic). Mr Perna's career included 20 years with Victoria Police, reaching Commissioned Officer rank and serving twice in the Homicide Squad. His corporate experience includes 12 years as the head of Australia Post's Corporate Security Group and over three years as the Director Corporate Security at Telstra. In 2007 he founded and became the Managing Director of Calibre International Pty Ltd, a specialist security risk and management consultancy focused on corporate clients. In this role, Mr Perna was the architect of Tennis Australia's Anti-Corruption Program for the Australian Open and assisted the Australian Football League (AFL) in the development of their integrity assurance program. Mr Perna s professional affiliations and memberships include the Australian Institute of Company Directors, Australian Institute of Management and the Australian Institute of Professional Investigators. Mr Perna is the Chairman of Crime Stoppers (Vic), a Member of the AFL Victoria Tribunal, Chief Commissioner's representative and ex- Deputy Chairman of the Victoria Police Blue Ribbon Foundation, a mentor of the Melbourne Lord Mayor s Charitable Foundation's Youth in Philanthropy Program, and the Honorary Chairman and co-founder of SecMan (Forum of Australian Corporate Security Executives). He is also a life Governor of the Royal Women's Hospital in Melbourne. Sal s connection with Rotary began over 30 years ago when he took apart in a GSE team visit to Germany. He has fond memories of his saturation training in the local language courtesy of the Berlitz school! Sal gave a most entertaining and informative talk. Unfortunately some of the media for his talk was copyright so cannot be reproduced. His time in the police force included many different postings but he spent extra time in homicide and detective training. He was closely involved with two of the most notorious events during his time: the Russell Street bombing and the Walsh Street murders. In his time at Australia Post he learnt about just how many things suspect packages could be sent through the post from suspected anthrax (sand, salt and talc mostly), illegal wildlife (lizards, spiders and snakes) to letter bombs. In Telstra it was all about maintaining the integrity of infrastructure that underpinned the entire countries social and economic wellbeing. In working with Tennis Australia he learnt that even well known player could show such erratic form reversals throughout a season (and even a match) that corruption was likely. In cricket the powerful betting interests would gradually groom players until ready to coerce them to manipulate an over or even a ball to allow a big wagering win. Sal has studied the best sports integrity groups in the world sport (Major League Baseball in the USA and horseracing in the UK). His talk was coloured with anecdotes as well as information. His flow chart of the positions needed to run a major race meeting (107 in total) was mind-blowing as was the 3500 rules of racing! Sal was an excellent presenter, the topic fascinating and for those of us who bet (even occasionally) it was good to know that everything possible is being done to try and ensure that horses (and greyhounds) run on their merits. Together the parks and sanctuaries cover nearly hectares or 5.3 % of Victoria's marine waters. Although created primarily to preserve the more than 12,000 marine plants and animals occupying Victorian waters they clearly also provide a refuge for bird life as well. Page 7
