I must say our 100 th Anniversary of Gallipoli celebration proved this to be very true. Almost 100 people attended our celebration at the Beaumaris RSL. We thank the other Rotary Clubs in our cluster, our guest speaker, Peter Darvall and many other guests, for their strong support. Special thanks must go to Peter & Maureen Flude and John & Jeni Beaty for their organisation and wonderful room presentation. As a result we were able to donate $250 to Beaumaris Legacy. Peter Darvall enlightened all of us on the many and significant achievements of the impressive individual, Sir John Monash, who was an engineer ( for the few of us claiming that title) The Replica WW1 One Bear raffle and our One Up Coin Toss also proved to be very popular. Thanks to our Mayor, Felicity Frederico, MLA, Murray Thompson, Assistant District Governor, Kay Gordon, Rotary Clubs of Hampton, Sandringham, Moorleigh Moorabbin, Bentleigh Moorabbin and Beaumaris, and all partners and guests for making this a great event. We have received notice from District that Malcolm Chiverton will be our District Governor in 2017 / Congratulations Malcolm and Karen. Next week we are back at Victoria Golf Club, with Michael Robinson talking to us on Livbetter, a concept on how the elderly can stay longer in their own homes. Tony McKenna will chair the meeting. 2 Calling Golfers Who Would Like a Game on Saturdays There are a few of us who play golf at Sandringham on a Saturday morning, generally hitting off just after 9am. While we have a four, and some casual fill-in players, the question is are there enough others in our Club, or friends of club members, men or women, to get more than one four going on a regular basis? More than one four will also mean when some of us are working at our Farmers Market or on other Saturday Rotary activities that we have a better chance of making up at least one four, or even more. The options are for people to play a social game or competition. We can easily accommodate a four comprised of some who want to play in the competition while the others play socially. So, if you are interested in playing on a Saturday morning please let Greg Every know at everys@optusnet.com.au or give him a ring on Sight of the Week, Page 9 Hubble Telescope 25th Anniversary Photo The giant star cluster is only about 2 million years old and contains some of our galaxy s hottest, brightest, and most massive stars known. Some of the heftiest stars are carving deep cavities in the surrounding material by unleashing a torrent of ultraviolet light and gale-force stellar winds (streams of charged particles). These are etching away the enveloping hydrogen gas cloud in which the stars were born. The image reveals a fantasy landscape of pillars, ridges, and valleys. The pillars, composed of dense gas, are resisting erosion from the fierce radiation and powerful winds. These gaseous monoliths are a few light-years tall and point to the central cluster. To see more go to: An Evening with Max Walker Saturday 30 May For Details see Page 7 The glittering tapestry of young stars flaring to life in this NASA Hubble Space Telescope image resembles an exploding aerial shell in a fireworks display. The vibrant image is being released to celebrate Hubble s 25 years of exploring the heavens. The sparkling centrepiece of Hubble s silver anniversary fireworks is a giant cluster of about 3,000 stars called Westerlund 2. The cluster resides in a raucous stellar breeding ground known as Gum 29, located 20,000 light-years away in the constellation Carina. 3 100 Years of ANZAC Anniversary Function Speaker: Professor Peter Darvall AO. Topic: The Life and Legacy of General Sir John Monash. Professor Peter Darvall AO was the Vice- Chancellor and President of Monash University from 2002 until August Prior to this, he had a distinguished career in civil engineering and was at Monash for 33 years. He was educated at Scotch College Melbourne. Prior to being vice chancellor he was the Deputy Vice-Chancellor at Monash University, responsible for research and development and information technology, a position he held from 1993 to 2003, and was previously Dean of the Faculty of Engineering. Professor Darvall is the author of several books on mechanics and structures and has written numerous research papers on topics related to his areas of expertise. He has been a Board member of the Prince Henry s Institute for Medical Research, Montech, the Victorian Strategic Industry Foundation (SIRF), the Baker Medical Research Institute, the Institute of Reproduction and Development and (CRCs) and the Cooperative Research Centres for Catchment Hydrology, Water Quality and Treatment, and Freshwater Ecology. He was also previously on the board of Melbourne Water. Professor Darvall is Director of The General Sir John Monash Foundation. The Foundation is a charitable organisation in Australia. Its purpose is to raise funds for, and to administer, Australia s prestigious postgraduate scholarships the John Monash Scholarships to recognize excellence and leadership. In 2004, the first group of Scholars were selected to receive the General Sir John Monash Foundation Scholarship. Since this time, they have become Australia s most prestigious postgraduate scholarships. The Foundation and Scholarships are supported by the Australian Government, private sector organisations, universities and individuals. They are Australia s equivalent to the renown Rhodes Scholarships. Professor Darvall gave an excellent talk on his topic covering the life of Monash from prior to WW1 were he established himself as both a pre-eminent engineer, citizen soldier and lawyer (with forays into his romantic life), his development as one of the great generals in WW1 and his post war work in establishing Victoria s industrial base (were he became more powerful than the State s Premier and Cabinet) Despite all his achievements Monash was never fully recognised in his own lifetime due to a combination of his German Jewish heritage and his unconventional romantic relations. Professor Darvall s talk was based upon the following sources which are recommended for anyone who wants to get the fully history of one of the greatest Australians.
