1 Serving the Community since 1985 In Gear R O T A R Y C L U B O F B E A U M A R I S W E E K L Y B U L L E T I N Number 44, 19 June 2017 Presidents Report Ellie Blackwood gave an interesting talk last Thursday about the need to make better use of the pockets of arable land in our suburbs. The outward spread of suburbia is gobbling up mainly good arable land at a rapid rate. One of the solutions offered by the organization Ellie represents (3000 acres) is to identify and bring into productive use pockets of unused but arable land in our built-up areas. She went on to cite the St Stephen s Community Garden (our project) as a classic example of this. Next Meetings THURSDAY JUNE 22 DEBATE The benefits of old age outweigh the disadvantages. CHAIR: CHRIS D'ARCY AV: ADRIAN CULSHAW CASH DESK: FRED HOFMANN AND JOHN MANKS HOST: ROSS PHILIPS THURSDAY JUNE 29 CHANGEOVER NIGHT The combined board meeting (the final of the year) was held last week. There were two standout issues. The first was the board agreement to pursue continuing to pursue a golf tournament at Royal Melbourne Golf Course, in association with the Black Rock Sports Auxiliary. The second was the news that there had been developments on Sabu that could make the Schools Solar Project redundant. The latter issue is currently being investigated further and appropriate decisions on the future of the project will be made soon. Preparations are in hand for the Changeover Dinner on Thursday 29 June. In place of a speaker at our meeting on Thursday we are going to have a debate. The topic is The benefits of old age outweigh the disadvantages. Teams have been selected and THURSDAY JULY 6 KERRY KORNHAUSER TRACHOMA PREVENTION CHAIR: ROBERT MCARTHUR AV: KEN MIRAMS CASH DESK: HEATHER CHISOLM & JOHN BEATY HOST: MEGAN GLENWRIGHT Unless stated otherwise venue is Victoria Golf Club 6.30 for 7.00 Contents 1 Presidents Report 2 Notices 3 This Weeks Speakers 4 Art of Kakadu 5 Dick Garner Farewell 6 Club Structure / Photo of Week

3 This Week s Speaker: Ellie Blackwood Topic: 3000 Acres By doing so, we aim to normalise food growing as an expected feature of healthy urban landscapes. Our Story 3000acres was born out of a seemingly simple question: How can we improve access to healthy and fresh foods in urban environments? Through an innovative collaboration with town planners, lawyers, residential developers and web-based developers, our solution to this issue of urban food insecurity was not to provide food to people, but to instead unlock pockets of vacant land to enable people to grow food for themselves. Within the city of Melbourne there is such a vast amount of underutilized space ranging from tiny verges on street corners, to vacant car parks, to large scale empty lots awaiting development. By considering the principles of sustainable urban design we began to recognize the potential of the vacant concrete lot as an un-tapped opportunity to be transformed into vibrant and productive open spaces. There strategy is summarised in this slide: 3000acres is co-managed by Ellie Blackwood and Pippa French, and supported through the help of a team of engaged and committed volunteers. Ellie Blackwood is a project and key relationships manager at 3000acres. She has worked with the organisation since 2014 across a number of roles, including advocacy, volunteer coordination, site management and community development. Ellie has a Masters in Environmental Politics with an applied research focus on the role of policy in creating equitable and sustainable food systems. Pippa French is a Botanist and Horticulturist with a desire to make our cities happier and more resilient through growing food. She has worked at 3000acres since 2014 and in that time has managed numerous projects, relishing the diversity of the work. Pippa also works at the City of Yarra as an Urban Agriculture Facilitator. This is their story: Our Vision At 3000acres, we want to see more people, growing more food, in more places. Since 2014 we have been working to break down the barriers to urban food growing by improving the enabling cultural and regulatory environment, by influencing the public and private sector to rethink vacant land use, and by empowering community groups with the knowledge and skills they need to make it happen. The slides on the next page show how food production is being forced out of the Melbourne metropolitan area. 3000acres was a key helper in assisting Heather and her collaborators set up the St Stephen s Community Garden.
