The Or der of the Silver Feather is an honor ar y ser vice fr ater nity, the pur pose of which is to give recognition to those students who have been especially outstanding in their ser vice to the campus community and whose loyalty to Chowan Univer sity has been extremely notewor thy. Not more than six students (unless there is a tie) are selected each year, these having been nominated by member s of the faculty and staff. Those per sons being inducted are L akayla Brown, Car r ie Blowe, K yle Davison, Char les Donaldson, K atr ina Hodge, De'Srea Reaves, and Amber Smaltz. The Faith in Your Future Awar d is presented annually to a student who best exemplifies the univer sity?s mission and vision by consistently demonstr ating the ability to achieve his or her greatest potential in lear ning and ser vice to the Chowan community. The recipients are Amber Cunningham and Sean Timmons. The M er it Awar d is presented to a gr aduating senior j udged to have achieved at a high academic level in spite of obstacles which would have deter red or defeated a less deter mined or devoted individual. The recipients are K imlin Sykes and Richar d Whitted. The Estelle Thigpen Super ior Citizenship Awar d is provided to recognize that student who has been an exemplar y citizen within the univer sity community throughout the year. This awar d is given for the contr ibution of time, effor t and ener gy for the benefit of the student body. The recipient is K atr ina Hodge. The Best All Around Student must be a gr aduating senior who has achieved academically, excelled in extr a-cur r icular activities, exhibited leader ship ability among his or her fellow students, and sought to attain the ideals? academic and other wise? for which the univer sity stands. 7 PONDERINGS OF THE PROVOST Academic Awards Our students are a br ight and gifted group that Chowan is proud to have as member s of our community. There are sever al annual academic awar ds available to students that encour age engagement in teaching, lear ning, ser vice, and scholar ship. On Wednesday, Apr il 18, we gathered to celebr ate and acknowledge the academic achievements of our students. CHERYL JOY HOBDAY M CEL HENEY BUSI NESS AWARD is presented annually to the outstanding gr aduating senior in the School of Business. The recipient has achieved academically, been active in extr acur r icular activities, and is selected by the business faculty. The awar d is given in memor y of Cher yl Joy Hobday M celheney, a distinguished alumna and generous suppor ter of the univer sity. The recipient is Qeashaunda Johnson. The DRS. VAUGHN AND M I L ES OUTSTANDI NG BUSI NESS STUDENT AWARD is presented annually to recognize a student in the School of Business who will gr aduate within the next two year s, has maintained a GPA of 3.0 or greater, made significant contr ibutions in ser vice and citizenship, and is selected by the business faculty. The awar d was created by Dr. L inda L. M iles, Dean of the School of Business, and her husband, Dr. Richar d Vaughn. The recipient is Cynthia Car r ier. The DR. DEJESUS OUTSTANDI NG STUDENT I N ECONOM I CS AWARD is presented annually to a student who has completed a minimum of two economics cour ses at Chowan with the highest aver age and has interest in the field of economics. This awar d was created in honor of Dr. Gladys DeJesus, Distinguished Professor of Economics and a long-time faculty member in the School of Business. The recipient is K imlin Sykes. The JOSEPH L EE PARK ER SCHOL ARSHI P, an endowed scholar ship given by M r. and M r s. L ee Par ker of Raleigh, Nor th Carolina, is awar ded to a r ising j unior or senior Spor t Science student. The recipient must be nominated by the faculty of the depar tment. He or she must be a good role model, demonstr ate scholar ly pur suits, and show evidence of leader ship. The RAYM OND M EM ORI AL SCI ENCE SCHOL ARSHI P, an endowed scholar ship, is awar ded to a retur ning biology student who is selected by the faculty of the Depar tment of Biology as deser ving. The OUTSTANDI NG HI STORY STUDENT AWARD is given annually to the student with a consistently super ior recor d of academic achievement in histor y.
