The proposal was approved by the School of Architecture on August 26, 2015; the Educational Policy Committee of the College of Architecture, Design, and the Arts on November 11, 2015; and the college faculty on November 2, ATTACHMENT

2 Title: Proposal to Revise the Bachelor of Science in Architecture Sponsor: School of Architecture College of Architecture, Design, and the Arts Executive Summary: Description: The BS in Architecture will require students to complete a one-credit course to introduce students to the architecture culture of the School of Architecture and City of Chicago, Students will enroll in the new course ARCH 151: Architecture at Chicago in their first term in the program. Due to a reduction in hours of MATH 180 (Calculus I) by one hour effective Fall 2016, the addition of ARCH 151 will not change the total number of hours required for the degree which will remain at 124 credit hours. The School of Architecture proposes the addition of a new, one credit class for Bachelor of Science in Architecture students to be taken in the fall concurrently with ARCH 105. Arch 151 Architecture at Chicago 1 credit hour Description Provides an introduction to the architecture culture of the school and the city. The class includes discussions and presentations in conjunction with visits to buildings, exhibitions, lectures, and other architectural events in the city. Co-requisites: Arch 105. The additional course and credit hour will not add to the 124 credit hours required to earn the degree, because it will occur in Fall That is the same term that a change in the credit hours, from 5 to 4, for MATH 180 (Calculus I) will occur. The change in hours of calculus was approved by the Senate in AY for Fall 2016 and the School of Architecture supported this change as the decrease of 1 hour could easily be offset by increasing hours of electives. Instead, as the School had already been discussing the addition of a new introductory course, the loss of one hour of calculus will be offset by the hour of ARCH 151. Justification: Catalog Statement: The introduction to the architecture culture of the school and the city enables students to consider the possibilities and implications of their early design work more thoroughly. Additionally, the course enhances their understanding and appreciation of architecture as both a discipline and practice. Consequently, it is anticipated that the course contributes to greater retention of students. See below Minority Impact Statement: The impact on minorities is positive as it provides all students with greater support in their early study of architecture. 1

3 Budgetary and Staff Implications: There will be no impact on budget as current faculty and staff will manage the program. Library Resource Implications: Current library resources are sufficient for the new course. Space Implications: Unit (e.g. department) approval date: College (educational policy committee, faculty) approval dates: No additional space will be needed to administer the new course. And classroom space will be coordinated in collaboration with the Office of Classroom Scheduling each fall term. 4 BS in Architecture - CURRENT Degree Requirements To earn a Bachelor of Science in Architecture degree from UIC, students need to complete University, college, and school degree requirements. The School of Architecture degree requirements are outlined below. Students should consult the College of Architecture, Design, and the Arts section for additional degree requirements and college academic policies. In addition to college and University GPA requirements, students must maintain a C average in studio each year. Core Courses The core courses in the curriculum provide a foundation in the discipline of architecture through the study of the visual and verbal languages of architectural form and the materials and techniques of architectural production. Courses in math and the natural sciences, art and architectural history, humanities, and the social sciences as well as the profession of architecture enable students to make rational decisions about career options relative to their personal strengths and weaknesses.
