5 photo: Serge Brison photo: Serge Brison Atomium Interior & Pavilion Square de l'atomium 1 B-1020 Brussels Conix s envisaged what it would be like for a visitor walking up to the Atomium for the first time The boulevard had to be designed in such a way as to welcome visitors in a spectacular manner Visitors can walk across the new, large square which offers them the opportunity to look at the Atomium from a distance and from different angles A new pavilion has been added at the bottom of the Atomium, it is the starting point of an artistic landscape tour through this landmark construction The pavilion receives, orientates, links and sets the scene The architects pinpointed the purity of the spheres' design and recreated the atmosphere it had to evoke This was done in the least intrusive way possible: covering the interior with galvanized steel and the exterior with stainless steel The internal spaces of the Atomium flow uninterruptedly through one another via the spheres and tubes The tubes act as emotional extensions of the structure Project is public! m², Interior architect Conix s Conixs photo: Tom Vack Daily open from 1000h till 1800h During summertime different opening hours From Bruxelles central station take metrolijn 1A "Koning Boudewijn", stop station "Heizel" 5

6 photo: F Dujardin photo: M-F Plissart Metal Rue du Metal Brussels The building, which has preserved the qualities of space and light of the period of its construction, now houses a sports hall, an after-school homework programme, and three moderate-rent apartments This mixed development meets the requirements set out in the "neighbourhood agreement" urban-regeneration project for the Métal-Monnaie district AgwA decided to preserve as much as possible of the powerful modernist architectural structure The two apartments are conceived as a totally independent structure hanging over the roof As the existing apartment are already conceived as a bridge-structure, the new ensemble induces a horizontal stratification of heterogeneous parts contrasting strongly with the surrounding houses In order to reinforce this contrast, and also to match sharp financial criteria, facade cladding of the new apartments is realized in transparent polycarbonate, that is also used in the large glass roofs and facades photo: M-F Plissart Project is not public! m² Main designer, AgwA Ferriere Regie de Saint Gilles AgwA 6

10 photo: Kris Leenders photo: Kris Leenders Cityscape Gulden-Vlieslaan Brussels Quartier Louise, once Brussels' luxury district, lost a lot of its reputation over the last decades An association was founded to revitalise the neighbourhood A 5000 sqm wasteland site was put at the disposal of Belgian artist Arne Quinze (aka art director, furniture designer, interior decorator, creator of atmospheres) to bring life to the disconsolate district It took him 33 wooden stilts, 60 km of beams and nails to perform his task The result is a giant wooden sculpture, 40 m long, 25 m wide, 18 m high, described by the artist himself as "the capture of one moment in a form that is in full development" It is meant as an invitation to contemplation in this otherwise hectic neighbourhood, with the heavy traffic on the adjacent ring way But above all it attracts local residents, passers-by, visitors and tourists, chatting, playing, lounging in the ever-changing patterns of light and shade In a year from now, all the used wood will be fully recycled photo: Kris Leenders Project is public! 12 photo: MDW ure photo: MDW ure Le Lorrain Rue Le Lorrain Brussels Renovation of a former dealer of old iron into a social housing complex composed of a 4-flat building connected by a large common open space to 3 maisonettes at the rear of the site The project consists in clearing and opening up the interior of the plot that was entirely built and making this portion of the street "breathe" thanks to a wide opening The maisonettes are raised in order to maximise the amount of light captured and to accommodate a garage at street level The buildings are clad with grey metallic sheets whose aspect reminds of the industrial past of the plot A large circulation area is carved within the site and creates a wide meeting and playing area for residents The existing street front has been kept and it dialogues with the apartments through the volumes and the bridges/terraces photo: MDW ure Project is not public! m² MDW ure Commune de Molenbeek-St-Jean MDW_ARCHITECTURE 12

15 photo: Samyn and Partners photo: Samyn and Partners Residential area Minimes Rue des Minimes Brussels The 6 buildings in the residential area Minimes were designed in 1954 by the urban architects of Alpha Groep From a structural perspective, the composition of the ensemble, with 150 public-sector rented apartments is highly refined, and its structural elements were built with grat care Nevertheless, the ravages of time have left their mark on the buildings In consultation with Le Foyer Bruxellois, the number of studio apartments in the buildings has been reduced, yielding an overall reduction of the number of units from 150 to 98 The terraces increase residents' quality of life by making what was previously impossible, possible, such as eating outdoors or knowing that one's childre are playing outside safely The new exterior space is to be enclosed using hot-dip galvanised perforated steel sheeting photo: Samyn and Partners Public access unknown! 21 photo: Serge Brison photo: Serge Brison W16 Boulevard de Waterloo Brussels The concept for this project is based on the presence of a number of striking architectural elements This building is reminiscent of the glorious 1960s The combination of contemporary architecture with the existing style has breathed new life into this building This project entails renovating the building completely as well as the Bâtiment de l Horloge at the rear These two structures were also linked while the enclosed inner area got an atrium A new façade is envisaged for the building, a commercial section on the ground floor and offices on the upper floors While designing the façade, Conix s wanted to integrate it into the existing context It became more appealing with a contemporary, new look By using twisted glass plates, a refined vertical level is created that makes the building less imposing In this way, the building forms a fragmented resting point, dominated by a continuous flow of urban movement on the side Project is not public! m², Interior architect Conix s Conixs photo: Serge Brison Beroepskrediet NV 21

36 photo: Marc Belderbos photo: Marc Belderbos Klavertjevier extension Groendreef Brussels The 'Klavertjevier' (four-leaf clover) Primary School was ready for extension s Marc Belderbos and Marc vande Perre of AAC have added 12 new classrooms, a gymnasium, a room where the children rest and a caretaker's lodge, as well as providing a proper entrance hall and a canopy to partially cover the playground There is a break where the old and the new parts meet The architects have turned it into a fold and the resulting corner in turn determined the new floor plan in which the classrooms are arranged like alcoves No two are the same size and no corner between any two classroom walls forms a right angle The logic of the floor plan and the building has been enlarged into lines in concrete and brick For instance, the staircase on the west side of the building has been turned into a sculptural element The bricks and concrete form work slope upwards, while the rainwater on top of the glazed roof runs downwards, creating a small waterfall flowing into a pool photo: Marc Belderbos Public access unknown! 2005 AAC City of Brussels Lars_Kwakkenbos 36
