2 Zennetuin Koolmijngraversstraat 17 The project Zennetuin constitutes of the design of 3 appartments and a large public garden in the centre of Sint-Jans-Molenbeek, Brussels The trace of the former river 'Kleine Zenne' is clearly visible as an open space surrounded by a large diversity of constructions: warehouses, appartment blocks, public buildings The design of the public garden is based on the existing concrete floorslab, which can't be perforated, because of the polluted underground Large 'sculptured flower pots' and a generous supply of earth garantuee adequate circumstances for plants and the complex watersystemthe creation of a square at the streetfront, new covered playgrounds and the potential links to the surrounding parcels and buildings characterise the project The semi-industrial image of the environs is maintained Zennetuin is as an oasis in the raw industrial environment 2007 B-en 2

4 Sint Lukas School of Art Rue Verte Brussels The Sint Lukas School of Art is located in the heart of Brussels Originally, it was occupying a variety of old houses, which were bought one by one during the years by Sint-Lukas and transformed, as good as possible, to house educational functions Buildings M and R - located in the middle of the parcel and providing functional links to other buildings - were restored respectfully and adapted to the new program Along the Paleizenstraat a new building has been erected which features the new Sint-Lukas It visualizes the main entrance of the school with reception desk and a public exhibition space Educational functions are visible through the elevation Most of the existing buildings were demolished, due to their poor condition and inadequacy At the Rogierstraat, demolished buildings have been replaced by new ones, accommodating a workshop and some academic housing with a duplex for 'artists in residence' on top 2011 POLO architects 4

6 photo: LOW architects Little Willy Vlaamsesteenweg 160 On a tiny plot, LOW architecten proposes the concept of a structure that 'overgrows' the old 19th century house LOW transforms a single house into a guesthouse and duplex penthouse The existing neoclassical building is historically valuable and will be thoroughly renovated In order to create extra room for guests, for a restaurant, shop, gallery and duplex apartment, an extension on the adjacent plot appears inevitable The various residential units are separated by extremely generous outdoor spaces such as green roofs or rooftop terraces The new volume blends in perfectly with its surroundings, yet it evokes an interesting dialogue between old and new The angle represents the transition between the different building heights of both streets The new volume is built up and cut gradually in order to create a 'light' body from a volumetric point of view This generates space for large private terraces, for views to the inner area and to the public domain 2013 LOW s 6

7 photo: Marc Detiffe Cheval Noir Housing Zwart Paardstraat 16 The brief of the competition, held in 2003, was to transform the building of the former Hallemans breweries into 31 housing units for artists, including an in-house workspace On top of the transformation, a new construction was necessary to provide the needed surfaces This new wing creates space and views the courtyard and the surroundings To improve natural lighting, the upper part of the new building is withdrawn from the property limit, this allows nothern light to enter in the workshops The project seeks to integrate as much as possible all the structural and architectural elements that are characteristic of the old brewery On this inheritance background, the necessary interventions for contemporary living are clearly identified They create a dialogue with the existing building without imitating it The new openings in the old walls are radical but necessary to create a part of the new façade after demolitions or to open the southern wall Project is not public! 2010 Main designer, Atelier Gigogne l'escaut 7

8 Vanhaerents Rue de la Senne 36 This 40 apartments building in downtown Brussels was commissioned by a real estate developer The building is part of an ensemble of 3 existing building with very different characteristics and is situated between 3 streets (Fabriques/Senne/Anneessens) The surrounding existing buildings are very motley, regarding heights, functions, typologies The project proposed to enhance the neoclassical building in order to restore the urban order by joining the size of the building next door This raise consists of a dark volume, reminder of the new building located at the opposite corner of the complex and of the central part enhances The new parts are therefore designed with a specific expression of unification of the complex They are identified by the color black, while a series of elements (balconies, volumes, buildings) transplanted / reported, from different sizes, colors and scales, animate / complete / consolidate this portion of the hétéroclite building block 2010 Lhoas & Lhoas es 8

9 photo: MDW ure photo: MDW ure Savonnerie Heymans Rue d'anderlecht 139 Winning scheme of a European competition organised by the developer, the Savonnerie Heymans complex reflects a truly sustainable approach by recreating a real new neighbourhood of 42 low-energy and passive social accommodations including apartments, lofts, duplexes and maisonettes Although a 100% public housing scheme, thanks to the diversity of its program the Savonnerie Heymans provides a variety of spaces echoing the diversity of the people living in the very heart of Brussels Glass-enclosed bioclimatic loggias characterise the entire complex, providing an effective acoustical and thermal barrier but also providing a sense of privacy photo: MDW ure Project is not public! 10 photo: Marc Belderbos photo: Marc Belderbos Klavertjevier extension Groendreef 16 The 'Klavertjevier' (four-leaf clover) Primary School was ready for extension s Marc Belderbos and Marc vande Perre of AAC architectes have added 12 new classrooms, a gymnasium, a room where the children rest and a caretaker's lodge, as well as providing a proper entrance hall and a canopy to partially cover the playground There is a break where the old and the new parts meet The architects have turned it into a fold and the resulting corner in turn determined the new floor plan in which the classrooms are arranged like alcoves No two are the same size and no corner between any two classroom walls forms a right angle The logic of the floor plan and the building has been enlarged into lines in concrete and brick For instance, the staircase on the west side of the building has been turned into a sculptural element The bricks and concrete form work slope upwards, while the rainwater on top of the glazed roof runs downwards, creating a small waterfall flowing into a pool photo: Marc Belderbos Public access unknown! 2005 Client AAC architectes City of Brussels Lars_Kwakkenbos 10

11 photo: Piotr Krajewski photo: Piotr Krajewski Luxembourg Station Rue de Treves Brussels Brussels-Luxembourg Station is a station in the east of Brussels under the site of the European Parliament in Brussels The station was first inaugurated in as the Leopold Quarter station but was redesigned with the construction of the European Parliament It now covers 16,000 square meters and is owned and operated by National Railway Company of Previously above ground on Luxembourg Square, it was redesigned as a subterranean station with the construction of the European Parliament's Espace Léopold complex around it The same architect consortium responsible for the Parliament, Atelier Espace Léopold, were responsible for the station's redesign The historic entrance to the old station now forms a public hall for the Parliament Floor area/size m² Atelier Espace Léopold pkrajewski_pl photo: Piotr Krajewski 11

12 photo: HJ Imhoff Atomium Atomium square 1 B-1020 Brussels The Atomium is a modern monument in the Heizelpark in Brussels Designed by the engineer André Waterkeyn for the International Exhibition of Brussels, that took place here in 1958, the Atomium is a steel structure that is half way between sculpture and architecture It exists out of nine large spheres, each with a diameter of 18 meters They are arranged in the configuration of a central cubic system and form an iron of cristal, magnified 165 billion times Made entirely of steel clad with aluminium, the structure, at a hight of 102 metres and standing on three enormous bipods, dominates the Heysel plateau The interior disposition of the spheres was being undertaken by architects André and Jean Polak The Atomium was not intended to survive the Exhibition of 1958 Its popularity and success, however, ensured its place as a major landmark on the Brussels skyline 1958 Main designer, Interior architect Client André Waterkeyn André and Jean Polak Belgische Metaalnijverheden HJI Daily open from 1000h till 1800h During summertime different opening hours From Bruxelles central station take metrolijn 1A "Koning Boudewijn", stop station "Heizel" 12

13 photo: Kris Leenders photo: Kris Leenders Cityscape Gulden-Vlieslaan 26 Quartier Louise, once Brussels' luxury district, lost a lot of its reputation over the last decades An association was founded to revitalise the neighbourhood A 5000 sqm wasteland site was put at the disposal of Belgian artist Arne Quinze (aka art director, furniture designer, interior decorator, creator of atmospheres) to bring life to the disconsolate district It took him 33 wooden stilts, 60 km of beams and nails to perform his task The result is a giant wooden sculpture, 40 m long, 25 m wide, 18 m high, described by the artist himself as "the capture of one moment in a form that is in full development" It is meant as an invitation to contemplation in this otherwise hectic neighbourhood, with the heavy traffic on the adjacent ring way But above all it attracts local residents, passers-by, visitors and tourists, chatting, playing, lounging in the ever-changing patterns of light and shade In a year from now, all the used wood will be fully recycled photo: Kris Leenders Artist Client Arne Quinze Brussels Louise vzw Kris_Leenders open 24/7 for the duration of one year from September 2007 onwards from Brussels South Station (Brussel Zuid/Bruxelles Midi), take the metro line 2 (direction Simonis), get off at Louiza/Louise 13
