We believe that our approach will bring your aspirations, those of your stakeholders, and the ethos of Alaska and Juneau to life in the new capitol building. Design of a capitol wants to be entire in shell and core, interiors, lighting, systems, context of place and, in particular, in its connection to the citizens it serves. Achieving excellence in such important developments can involve challenging the orthodox idea of a single design leader. We will jointly lead the discovery process, bringing to it creative diversity and depth of experience. We believe our efforts will uncover the difference-making ideas that will yield an inspired capitol. With our leadership and our open communication style, inclusiveness in the process is ensured, which, in itself, assures rich ideas. The ability to interact, draw out, and give substance to stakeholder aspirations is, in our approach, essential to the project s success. To this end, we have tailored a team that shares our attitudes and aptitudes for finding excellence within affordable means for implementation, for drawing out and giving relevance to stakeholder aspirations, and with whom we have had great success in past design achievement. In our view a great idea does not care where it comes from, and each team member will bring ideas that will enrich the outcome. ECI/Hyer, architectural associate, is an Alaskan firm with whom NBBJ has worked in all parts of Alaska over the past 20 years. That established relationship and the success of our projects in Alaska underlies our confidence in proposing on the capitol. Peter Walker Associates, one of the nation s recognized leaders in landscape design has collaborated with NBBJ repeatedly. Peter s individual work includes the World Trade Center Memorial in New York and the United States Embassy in Beijing. Paladino & Company, sustainability consultants, is one of the most respected firms in the field. Tom Paladino, one of the creators of the LEED-rating system, is on the Board of Directors of the U.S. Green Building Council, working to promote buildings that are environmentally responsible, profitable and healthy places to live and work. The firm s public projects include the new Seattle Library and the new Seattle Federal Courthouse. 6 TEAM COMPOSITION The firms and individuals we have chosen for your project have proven themselves as strong collaborators who will bring powerful ideas about how to harness your site, geography and the unique characteristics of the Alaskan culture. Each member singly brings experience, specialized perspective, and a compatible philosophy about civic place making. Collectively, the ideas that emerge will center on the important role the State Capitol building will play in public life. We have chosen the specific firms and individuals not only because we have worked with them successfully on projects of similar scale and complexity and know that they share both our values and approach, but also because they are the best in their respective fields. This will ensure that our design concept embodies the ideals of freedom and the democratic process, uplifting the spirit of Alaskan citizens. Terry Hyer is a great colleague and a friend. We have partnered with his firm, ECI/Hyer based in Anchorage, on award-winning, client satisfying, iconic projects in Alaska, including the Alaska Native Medical Center, South Central Foundation Primary Care Center, and Kodiak Fisheries Research Center. Terry will be a design collaborator from start to finish, having ownership in the design intent. His firm will be key in providing experience in successful architectural response to the specific climate conditions in Juneau. ECI/Hyer will be co-developers of the project documentation and the construction process. Peter Walker and his firm, Peter Walker and Partners, is one of the most acclaimed landscape designers in the world. He recently worked with NBBJ on the United States Federal Courthouse in Seattle. He will provide the urban and landscape context to the design dialogue, along with NBBJ urban design partner Bill Johnson (who was previously a partner with Peter Walker.) Peter s particular skill in integrating civic spaces into their urban and regional context is extremely important to the success of the public place that the Capitol can provide. Peter s firm has been able to effectively realize designs because of its focus on constructability. Tom Paladino of Paladino & Company is one of the most widely recognized leaders in sustainable architecture. He and his firm have worked with NBBJ on our LEED Silver certified Justice Center in Seattle. His firm has worked on 150 Green and LEED projects, providing ideas, methodology and analysis to find the most effective and affordable sustainable building strategies. The opportunity to make the Capitol a model for the state in affordable sustainable design can be an important part of fulfilling the vision for this project. Jon Magnusson is another long-time collaborator. He and his firm, Magnusson Klemencic based in Seattle are internationally known for innovative structures and have provided structural and civil engineering on most of the large complex projects we have designed. Magnusson Klemencic has a long history of successful Alaskan projects both with this design team and with others, and they have been aggressive in applying green design, long before the emergence of LEED standards. The ability to find the structural opportunities afforded by the dramatic Telephone Hill site will have a strong influence on design. Jon s is a strong voice in the conceptual process, defining structural and civil engineering opportunities that create powerful and effective forms.

7 Boyd Morganthaler and his firm AMC, mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineers based in Anchorage worked with us on the Alaska Native Medical Center. He has worked on many of the most complex buildings in Alaska. The unobtrusive inclusion of both security and communications capabilities in the Capitol will be critical to its success. AMC brings a great creativeness in building systems including mechanical, electrical, communications and security to the design process. Other key collaborators within NBBJ: Bill Johnson, FASLA, principal and urban designer, brings a great vision about urban scale, people s experience and creation of public place. Rysia Suchecka, Honorary AIA, partner and Interior Design Hall of Fame member, integrates concepts that make the interior and exterior a seamless whole. She focuses on those things that add civility and unexpected moments of joyous surprise and revelation to the building user s experience. Melanie Taylor, LEED, associate and lighting designer, brings the art and science of light to shape the perception of the place (in daylight, mist, or darkness) and to enhance the performance and satisfaction of users. Kerry Hegedus, LEED, senior associate and technical architect, brings the technical creativity to integrate all systems on complex work including the Kodiak Fisheries Research Center, Seattle Justice Center, and SAFECO Field. Jeanne Iannucci, AIA, LEED, principal and project manager brings a can do management approach to make the design a reality. She has led large civic projects such as the Seattle Justice Center, SAFECO Field, and the Museum of Flight. We believe that this team is ideally tailored to the needs of this project. We know that each of these people and the firms they bring with them, have the attitude, the skill, and the creativity to create something with you that will advance the whole notion of a state capitol in a democratic republic, and create an expression of Alaskan spirit which will unite the people of Alaska in a great sense of pride for what you are as a people and what you share as a cultural history and a place.
