FIRE AND EMERGENCY PROCEDURES In the event of a fire drill, all students should immediately evacuate the building during any sounding of the fire alarm using the stairwells only. If you are not sure, please go to your Resident Advisor s room to check- in. Here is important fire emergency information: Things to know: The layout of your floor. The location of all stair exits from your floor. The number of doors between your room and the exit stairs, or your room and the fire escape. It is essential to be able to find the exit in the dark. Where your room key is located. Take the key with you if you are forced to evacuate. The location of fire alarm boxes (if your building has them). When evacuating and opening any door students should place hand against the door. If it is too hot to touch, DO NOT exit through that door, instead they should find an alternate evacuation route. If there is no alternate evacuation route, they should place towels along the bottoms of doors, go to the window of their room and wave for help. Fire Safety If a burning odor or smoke is present, pull a fire alarm pull station to activate the fire alarm system. Leave the building, Use the nearest stairway. Do not use the elevator. The elevators are programmed to idle on the first floor when the alarm is activated. Do not hold the stairwell doors open. Leaving doors open makes the stairwells dangerous and unusable Evacuate as quickly as possible but in an orderly manner. Do not push or shove. 10

11 Once outside, move at least 100 feet from the building. Return to the building only when given the all clear by university police or other proper emergency personnel. Do not assume when the audible alarm ceases it is safe to enter the building. Tornado/Severe Thunderstorm Information The information below will prepare you to know what to do should we experience severe weather. A tornado watch means that weather conditions are favorable for the formation of a tornado. A tornado warning is issued when a tornado has actually been sighted in the surrounding area. Emergency warning sirens are activated when there is a tornado warning. If a tornado warning is issued and you are inside: Stay inside. Stay away from outside walls, windows, mirrors, glass, overhead fixtures, and unsecured objects such as filing cabinets or bookcases. If possible, move to a below ground- level floor, interior corridor, or room or office without windows and crouch low with your hands covering the back of your head and neck. Do not use the elevators. If requested, assist persons with disabilities to the safest area on the same floor. Do not leave the shelter area until after the storm is over. Continue to monitor the weather via radio or television until the tornado watch has been lifted for your area. Never allow your visitor to wander unescorted throughout the building. 17

18 SAFETY AND LIABILITY The student assumes full responsibility for all losses and/or damages to the student, any guest(s), any belongings, and/or the contents of housing occupied or otherwise under the control of the student. By signing the housing agreement the student agrees to release Joffrey Ballet School and its employees of all obligations and/or liability to the student s person, guest(s), and/or belongings, and/or the contents of Housing. Joffrey Ballet School is not responsible for any loss resulting from but not limited to theft, acts of nature, building conditions, negligence, etc. COMPLIANCE WITH THE LAW The student shall obey all present City, State, and Federal laws and orders or regulations which affect the building and shall comply at student s expense with all such notices which arise from student s improper use of the room or the building. CUSTODIAL SERVICES TWU custodians are responsible for cleaning the public areas of each residence hall daily. However, a large part of the hall upkeep is the responsibility of the residents. Custodians are not required to move furniture back to its original place or to clean up any mess that is the result of student negligence. Residents may be assessed the cost of any extra cleaning performed by custodial personnel as a result of unnecessary messes. Residents are responsible for cleaning their own rooms/apartments. Cleaning of the individual's room/apartment is the responsibility of the residents occupying the room/apartment. The custodial staff maintains the cleanliness and upkeep of the lounges, lobbies, hallways, and community bathroom facilities. ELEVATORS There are elevators in Guinn Hall. All elevators are equipped with timing devices that keep the doors open for a short period of time. This helps to maximize elevator use. Never attempt to manually close or open elevator doors. This is dangerous and can cause serious damage to equipment and only cause additional delays with the doors. The elevator emergency equipment is to be used "for emergencies only". If you drop an item down the elevator shaft, a repair representative will be called to try to retrieve the items at your expense. The average per hour service charge is $75. LAUNDRY AND VENDING MACHINES Washing machines and dryers are available in each residential community. The machines are free to use. Only residents should use the machines. If a resident is found using machines to wash items belonging to a non- residential student, they will face disciplinary action. If a machine is not working; report it to the front desk of your residential community. Make sure to note the ID number on the machine to expedite the work order process. For your convenience, vending machines are located in each residence hall. If you lose money in the vending machine you will need to go to the Cashier s Office in ACT for a refund. The front desk does not provide refunds. PEST CONTROL To discourage pest problems extermination is provided by Facilities Management and Construction. Residents can help this effort by adhering to sensible cleaning practices. Residents may be asked to clear closets, remove dresser drawers, cover food items, or assist in other ways the University deems necessary to facilitate an effective pest control program. Spraying generally occurs over vacation periods in student rooms and public areas. This is done to inconvenience as few residents as possible while maintaining pest control. If pest problems occur; please notify your Area Manager. A word to the wise - Improperly stored food, dirty dishes, and trash attracts insects, roaches, and mice. You and your neighbors in keeping the facilities clean and free of debris can do more to control the pest problem than by any quantity of pesticides we can put out to kill them. SPECIAL NEEDS FACILITIES The Department of University Housing also has rooms with special accommodations for mobility and hearing impaired students. Contact the Housing Office for further information. 2

19 TWU REGULATIONS FOR GUEST CONDUCT TEXAS WOMAN S UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENT OF UNIVERSITY HOUSING CODE OF CONDUCT SUMMER CONFERENCE GUESTS Welcome to the residence halls at Texas Woman s University! 20 Do not tamper with fire equipment. This includes hanging items on sprinkler heads, playing with fire extinguishers, and pulling false alarms. Tampering with fire equipment is a federal offense. It could jeopardize the safety of the entire building. When you check- out of your room: throw out all trash, leaving your room in the same condition you found it at check- in; turn off all lights in your room; and return your key at the check- out center. Please stay on your assigned floors. There are students in the building who are involved in intense summer classes. Please respect their study times. Other guests, as well as TWU students, may be sharing meeting areas (i.e. hall living room, recreational areas, etc.). Please do not interfere with the activities of these individuals. The car license number will be needed when the permit is issued. All motorcycles and mopeds require a University vehicle- parking permit that can be purchased at the Department of Public Safety. Motorcycles should be parked in University parking lots since they are motorized vehicles. Mopeds may be parked in University parking lots or chained to bicycle racks. 4
