14 What is a grapnel anchor? The grapnel anchor is a traditional design which is engineered so that at least one of its flukes will always be aimed at the sea bed whichever way it lands. Thanks to its lightweight status, the grapnel is a non-burying anchor with only one of the four flukes digging in and the remaining three staying above the ground. Welcome to the Quays This relative lightness compared to other anchors also makes it easier to bring aboard. Stowage is also simple with the grapnel anchor thanks to its easy fold-away structure. The grapnel does have some downsides however, such as that it is mainly only suitable for smaller vessels and dinghies in the short term.
