1 MARK STEWART RIBA SCA AABC CHURCH ARCHITECT Mark Stewart is a consultant Conservation Architect with over 25 years experience in private practice working on Historic Buildings. He is an Architect Accredited in Building Conservation [AABC] and is also accredited by the RIBA as a Specialist Conservation Architect [SCA]. Mark has worked as a commissioned architect for English Heritage and the Heritage Lottery Fund. His voluntary work includes former appointments as the Chair of Nottinghamshire Churches Trust and as a Trustee of the Society for Ancient Buildings [SPAB]. He is also the Chairman of the Harcourt Post Mill Trust. In 2013 Mark was appointed by the RIBA as an assessor for architects applying to the RIBA s Conservation Register. In 2014 he was appointed as an architect member and Joint National Amenity Society representative to Coventry Diocesan Advisory Committee. Mark is a member of the Ecclesiastical Architects and Surveyors Association. Mark is the Church Architect for more than fifty churches in the dioceses of Coventry, Derby, Leicester, Sheffield and Southwell.

8 Normanton on Soar St James A local earthquake had caused significant damage to the upper section of the spire. The repairs involved totally rebuilding the top of the spire where the stonework is only 180mm thick and incorporating a stainless steel restraining rod to reduce movement. A stainless steel twisted thread bar which formed rings in alternate horizontal stone courses was also inserted. This increased the spires capacity to accommodate tensile stresses from wind and earthquakes.

9 before Nottingham St Nics - Reordering St Nicholas is a Grade 11 listed building dating from the Seventeenth century. The church was last refurbished in the 1980 s and the interior had become very tired and unwelcoming. The brief was to lift the spirit of the building, incorporate new meeting areas, toilets, kitchen and an office and open the church out to the City Centre. The project incorporated all of this within the existing building envelope whilst simultaneously making the worship space feel bigger, brighter and more comfortable. At the West end the new balcony floats out into the church. The cantilevered balcony has no supporting columns, but rather uses the West Tower as a counterweight.

What was once the main west door had been bricked up and the entrance was down a side elevation. before before after now: The original West doorway has been opened up and connected to the street by a new terrace and stairs. When the church is open the outer timber doors fasten back into the sides of the opening. Inner glass doors then give open views through to the chancel. after

Significant replacement of roof coverings and the redesign of poor Victorian construction details such as the once lead lined gutters sitting on the wall heads.
