5 For Immediate Release Washington, DC (4/7/2009) Marilynn Deane Mendell Complete: Rebuilding Together Washington, DC 11,000 sf National Headquarters In a city where ceiling heights have limitations, Interior Designer Vega Overby used vertical stripes to extend the visual height of Rebuilding Together s space. The design incorporates warm woods to reflect a residential feel, while the unusual use of lights that flow from the ceiling into the walls conceptually references building framework. The design team took engraved donor bricks from the old offices and re-assembled them in the new conference room to form a white-washed brick accent wall. Careful to preserve the worn quality of the bricks, the designers created an updated means to recognize the organization s sponsors while reinforcing the larger design concept. The nation s leading non-profit working to preserve affordable home ownership, Rebuilding Together provides free home rehabilitation and repairs for low income Americans. Collaboration produces great design: Rebuilding Together s entry-level staff accompanied Hickok Cole designers to furniture showrooms to provide input on the design of workstations. KCCT also is conducting a space study for the three PAHO facilities. Principal Enrique A. Bellini, AIA, EFI, Project Manager James Dudney, RA, and Chief Programmer Jamie Leclerc, ASID, LEED -AP, lead the KCCT team. The renovation will accommodate the spacial and technical needs of the Emergency Operations Center teams, who coordinate disaster responses, with shared conference rooms, workstations and a library. During emergencies the Knowledge Space will become the disaster response command center for management and exchange of critical information to key personnel and government agencies. PAHO Headquarters, Washington, DC Completed Project: New USAID Annex Office Building Tbilisi, Georgia Karn Charuhas Chapman & Twohey (KCCT) architects completed the design of the New USAID Annex Office Building in Tbilisi, Georgia for the U.S. Department of State s Bureau of Overseas Building Operations. John Chapman, AIA, principal in charge, and Paul Phillips, AIA, project manager, led the design of the 29,000 sf building constructed by the Framaco Epik Metis Joint Venture. The three-story annex building complements the existing Chancery with a limestone and basalt stonework exterior. The team organized the interior around an open lobby with a central stone staircase using clerestory windows for indirect natural light. James Dudney, RA, project manager for PAHO renovation KCCT Highlights Simon Mance, intern Jamie Leclerc, ASID, LEED -AP, chief programmer for PAHO space study In March 2009, Karn Charuhas Chapman & Twohey (KCCT) architects Simon Mance, intern, spoke at the 9th Annual Structures for Inclusion Conference in Dallas, TX about his work on the award-winning design and construction of the Arts Center with Studio 804 in Greensburg, KS. Mance joined Studio 804, a nonprofit organization providing students with experience in the development and construction of affordable, sustainable and prefabricated buildings, in 2008 to design and build the 1,600 sf arts center using sustainable solutions such as solar panels, a geothermal system and three wind turbines. The Arts Center is part of the sustainable redevelopment of Greensburg, KS, where a tornado killed 11 residences and leveled 95 percent of the city in May After joining KCCT in October 2008, Mance helped design New Embassy Compounds in Bucharest, Romania and Malabo, Equatorial Guinea. In his spare time, he volunteers with Architecture in the Schools, an architecture education program for students in Washington, DC. He also is helping Working Boys Center, in Quito, Ecuador, establish a design/build experience for architecture enthusiasts. Mance earned a master s degree in architecture from the University of Kansas School of Architecture and Urban Planning. Low-resolution files are attached.
