Ths 2011 WMA meetng s co-presented wth the Assocaton of Trbal Archves, brares, and Museums (ATAM) and co-hosted by the Pacfc Islands Museums Assocaton (PIMA) and the Hawa Museums Assocaton (HMA). Our collaboratve approach to ths year s conference exemplfes our theme; Püpükah Holomua, or Workng Together to Move Forward. Together the program promses to provde a dynamc experence for all n attendance. Aloha! 5 USS Arzona Memoral Pre-Conference Tour Frday, September 23 8:00AM 5:00PM A Specal Day at Hstorc Pearl Harbor Spend an entre day at Pearl Harbor Hstorc Partner Museums, a ste that holds sgnfcance n Amercan hstory. Explore the newly renovated Pearl Harbor Vstor Center, or the USS Bowfn Submarne Museum, Pacfc Avaton Museum, and Battleshp Mssour Memoral Museum. At the end of the day, guests wll embark on a very specal Pearl Harbor Boat Tour about the harbor and endng wth a stop on the USS Arzona Memoral. In Hawaan hstory, Pearl Harbor was an mportant cultural ste snce t was once abundant n oysters and other wldlfe, hence ts modern name. Shangr a Color Claddng: Islamc Tles from the Dors Duke Collecton Jon Keelan Overton, Curator of Islamc Art, on ths tour of ceramc tles from Iran, Syra, Turkey and Span at Shangr a. Overton wll dscuss the orgns and uses of ceramc tles n varous parts of the Islamc world from the 12th to early 20th century; show how Duke ntegrated them nto the archtecture and nteror desgn of her home, Shangr a; and trace how her tle commssons helped stmulate a revval of artstc tradton n 1930s Iran. Sunday, September 25 9:30AM 12:15PM 2. Wakk Aquarum: Behnd the Scenes ocated on the shorelne of Wakk beach the Wakk Aquarum was opened n 1904 and s the thrd oldest aquarum n the Unted States. In ths behnd-the-scenes tour, partcpants wll be guded through the aquarum wth educators and curators to vew the exhbtons and hear about current research, exhbton practce and carng for a delcate lvng collecton. A hghlght of the tour wll be learnng about the new Northwest Hawaan Islands exhbton. NWHI s a Marne Natonal Monument recently desgnated as a UNESCO World Hertage Ste and s home to over 7,000 marne speces, a quarter of whch are found nowhere else on Earth. Offerng vstors a nearly once-n-a-lfetme experence to see some of these fshes and corals n ther natural habtats, the Wakk Aquarum's new exhbt wll feature a lvng reef ecosystem representatve of that found n the world's most solated slands. 2:00PM 5:00PM 3. Msson Houses Museum: Steppng Up to the Challenge Ths behnd the scenes tour focusng on meetng the challenges of a straned economy at one of the four accredted museums n Hawa`. The tour begns at the 1821 Msson House examnng the challenges presented by passve clmate control and general mantenance and how the museum s steppng up to address these on-gong ssues. Next, partcpants vst collecton storage focusng on unque storage solutons that stretch dollars, protect collectons and buld communty. The tour ends at the Chamberlan House Gallery where workng wth schools and non-profts has enabled the museum to contnue ts changng exhbtons program whle buldng a stronger sense of communty. Manoa Hertage Center: Botancal Garden and Hawaan Cultural Ste Vst Manoa Hertage Center, a Hawaan cultural ste and botancal garden n the heart of lush Manoa Valley. Enjoy a one-hour outdoor guded walk through a Hawaan natve plant garden that surrounds an ancent Hawaan sacred stone structure (heau). Herbara, throughout the Pacfc regon, house unque collectons. The one-day dsaster preparedness workshop (for Herbarum collectons only) wll be talored to assess ther readness, provde templates for dsaster plans and demonstrate methods to stablze nsect and water damaged materals. Ths workshop s co-sponsored by WESTPAS (Western States and Terrtores Preservaton Assstance Servces) and the Consorta of Pacfc Herbara (CPH). Fundng for WESTPAS has been provded by the Natonal Endowment for the Humantes and the Natonal Scence Foundaton has provded fundng for CPH. Fee: $5 (unch s not provded). ocaton: The Bshop Museum. Partcpants wll learn about dfferent types of surveys and assessments, and how to best evaluate nsttutonal needs and shape the resultant plan. Fundng sources for surveys and how a survey can be used as a fundng tool for mplementaton strateges wll be dscussed. Practcum ncludes use of equpment and testng methods to montor envronmental condtons as well as procedures for analyss of results. Topcs to be covered nclude protectng valuable collectons, screenng/hrng/frng/tranng, legal consderatons n securty, fre protecton, emergency preparedness/management, busness contnuty plannng, workplace volence preventon and physcal securty. The CIPM program s the only management-level securty tranng and certfcaton program specfc to cultural propertes. A Hands on Mn-Museum Theater Workshop Communty e Museum theater s a growng area of nterest as a publc program and educatonal offerng. Whle the challenges of space, scrptwrtng, and staffng are dauntng, the benefts are mmense. Dffcult subjects can be addressed, emotons can be expressed, and audences are moved and engaged. Two museums n Hawa and Alaska descrbe ther theater programs and provde a nuts-and-bolts approach to creatng your own program. The workshop, whch takes place at Bshop Museum, wll enable attendees to experence the story of Nah ena ena and her Sacred Pa ü part of the daly storytellng program at Bshop Museum. The sesson wll conclude wth a small group exercse where partcpants wll develop ther own object-based storytellng approach wth a mystery object. Fee: $25 per person. Partcpants wll learn to: 1) make humdfcaton chambers from plastc trash cans and from plastc trays wth a sheet of Plexglas and how to use these to humdfy documents; 2) flatten documents usng sheets of blottng paper and Plexglas; 3) stablze torn documents by encapsulaton n polyester flm or placement n a sleeve or envelope; 4) choose from the varety of folders and boxes that are commercally avalable for the storage of documents; 5) make custom rgd folders from acd-free corrugated board; and 6) make custom boxes from acd-free corrugated board. Now one of the largest prvate schools n the Unted States, Kamehameha Schools emphaszes Hawaan language and culture, offerng supplementary courses n Hawaan lterature, culture, hstory, song composton and performance, chant, and dance.
