1 March 2016 An update from your Mt Eliza Community Bank Branch. It s been a very busy summer for the Mt Eliza Community Bank Branch. This edition of the newsletter includes just a taste of what we ve been up to, including our sponsorship of many local clubs, events and initiatives. We re particularly excited about the developments at the Mt Eliza Men s Shed which is expected to open by March The shed s Steering Committee have done a great job, and we can t wait to see it up and running (see more inside). We ve signed on as a sponsor of the Mt Eliza Farmers Market for 2016, and we couldn t be happier to be supporting this fantastic initiative run by the Mt Eliza Chamber of Commerce. You ll see our volunteer team lending a hand at the market this year. A big thank you to all of our customers. You re helping us to make great things happen here in Mt Eliza. Our branch returns 80 per cent of its profit back to our local Mt Eliza community. If you believe in shopping locally, then banking locally is a no-brainer. From the Chairman Mt Eliza Community Enterprise Limited finished December 2015 in a strong position, posting a profit for the six months to 31 December of $25,322. This is a good result for the company and inline with the Board s objectives for the 2015/16 financial year. We operate in a competitive environment with plenty of financial services competition in our main street. Success demands a high Reagan Barry level of skill, focus, and commitment from the Board. It also requires outstanding customer service, product knowledge and excellence from our staff. I want to thank the whole team for the work they are putting in to help us get these results. We are focused on continuing our momentum. Mt Eliza was named as Bendigo Bank s Regional Branch of the Year in 2015 and we are working hard to consolidate that position in Over the next few months our volunteer team will lend a hand at number of local community events. One of our goals is to increase our visibility and to engage in many more conversations about who we are and what we do. Late last year we published our Business Plan which is available on our website (Investor Relations page). It outlines our strategic plans for the future. The six months ahead will present challenges and opportunities. The Board and I will continue to work hard to drive growth and results for all our stakeholders. We are all passionate believers in the Community Bank model and the value it can bring to our community if the community gets behind us. 2 Our Young Citizen of the Year. Local Mt Eliza Secondary College student, Tia McLean, was recently named as the Mornington Peninsula s Young Citizen of the Year for In July 2015 we sponsored Tia to attend the Magic Moments Youth Leadership and Business Summit in Sydney. By sponsoring her to attend the week-long camp we ve seen some remarkable flow-on effects. On her return, she hit the ground running. Tia was full of inspiration and ideas to contribute to her local community and keen to share the experiences she d had at the event with other students here in our region. Tia and her colleagues at Mt Eliza Secondary College set to work organising the 2015 Peninsula Youth Summit. Their aim was to raise awareness of some serious issues facing our young people. The event included presentations and workshops on nutrition, body image, bullying and mental health. Tia and her team wanted to give participants a chance to hear from experts, and to connect with others experiencing pressure. Around 100 students participated in this moving and inspiring event held at Mt Eliza Secondary College in October Our Mt Eliza Community Bank Branch was thrilled to help the students with the planning and logistics. Our staff and board members also attended. Tia and her friends have taken-on a leadership role to support, educate and empower their peers. We think that s incredibly special and we re really proud of them. But Tia didn t stop there. She has joined the Mornington Peninsula Shire s Youth Committee and in 2015 she won a regional film prize. So what s next for Tia? We can report that planning is underway for an exciting youth forum event, focusing on bullying, which will be held at Mt Eliza Secondary College in the coming months. Tia and her team are working to bring a range of highly-regarded experts to Mt Eliza to discuss the issue with young people and their parents. Their aim is start a new conversation about bullying and to provide strategies for coping and support from psychologists, cyber bullying experts and other specialists. We ll keep you posted on that event via our Facebook page, there will be promotional posters around the village and you can get more information from Mt Eliza Secondary College. Congratulations to Tia on being such an inspiration to her peers and the rest of our community. Piggy, James and Jo with some young fans at the Carols on the Green. Mt Eliza Carols on the Green. We were very proud to be a major sponsor of the Mt Eliza Carols on the Green event held in December 2015 in the lead-up to Christmas. It was a wonderful evening for all the family. The 500+ crowd enjoyed traditional Christmas carols led by local entertainers, the Salvation Army Band and St Thomas Moore Primary School s choir. Santa Claus and our own mascot Piggy made appearances on stage to the delight of the little kids. Our branch and Board team were involved selling programs, glow sticks and Christmas candles. The funds we raised will help the organisers run the event again in Congratulations to everyone involved in this local community event, particularly the Mt Eliza Chamber of Commerce who work hard on a very small budget to pull it all together. It s local events like this that make our community such a great place to live. Mornington Life Saving Club. We re a proud sponsor of the Mornington Life Saving Club, and it s been a great summer of activities for their members. In addition to the club s training programs and beach patrol activities, their volunteer committee and members organised the 11.2km Bloody Big Swim and 1.2km Grand Challenge Swim both held in January. It was a fantastic afternoon for the Grand Swim Challenge with over 300 competitors taking to the water. The club also participated in the colourful Australia Day parade and participated in the MMAD swim event. They are currently in training to take around 100 nippers to the State Life Saving Championships in Warnambool for the Labour Day long weekend. Congratulations to the club committee, members and volunteers on a summer packed with healthy physical activities, important safety lessons, and loads of fun. 3 Congratulations Carolyn. A big congratulations to our Board member and Company Secretary, Carolyn Parker, who received an Honorary Doctorate in Business at RMIT s 2015 graduation ceremony in December Carolyn delivered the event s keynote speech encouraging the new graduates to get involved and actively participate in their chosen fields of endeavour. We re extremely proud to have Carolyn on the Board of Directors of Mt Eliza Community Enterprise Limited. She s one of the hardest working, most humble and inspiring people we know, and a real inspiration to us all. In December our branch and Board team joined the members of Mt Eliza Bowling Club for a fun evening at Barefoot Bowls. The Mt Eliza Bowling Club has never looked better thanks to some major refurbishments. An impressive new state-of-the-art synthetic green and some overhead lights have made night bowling competitions a possibility. Our Mt Eliza Community Bank Branch helped the club with the finance for these refurbishments. Member for Mornington, David Morris MP, also helped the club to secure government funding for the project. So we were delighted to kick off our shoes to take part in one the club s social summer evenings in December. Club members were generous with their time and coached us to get a feel for the bowls, the new surface, and the rules of the game. As the saying goes: lawn bowls is easy to learn, but takes a life-time to master. The club s Community Bowls Challenge kicked-off in February. We are proud to sponsor of this social competition designed to introduce the game to non-bowlers. We re also fielding a team. Mt Eliza Bowling Club are keen to introduce the joys of the game to a younger and more diverse audience. Potential bowlers and people with no or little experience who simply want to try the sport, are welcome. The club is happy to arrange a preliminary lesson to get you started. Fundraising for the Peninsula Home Hospice. The Peninsula Home Hospice is a much-loved organisation on the Mornington Peninsula. Established in 1984 they are an accredited, not-for-profit community palliative care organisation providing specialist health care and practical support to people living at home with a terminal illness. They have touched the lives of many local families. Our Branch Manager Jess Bayne and Board member Alex Godfrey joined colleagues from the Frankston and Balnarring branches to help with the hospice s fundraising. Their small team got together to organise a charity fundraising auction night. Around 90 people attended the event held at Baxter Barn in October The auction was a great success and raised $15,000 on the night. Local businesses were approached to provide items for the auction and the response was overwhelming. Donations included accommodation packages, sporting and lifestyle goods, artwork and tickets to entertainment events. Our Mt Eliza Community Bank Branch and Board were particularly happy to support Jess and Alex with event promotion and ticket sales. A popular auction item was tickets to see Broadway to Oz starring Hugh Jackman with the chance to meet the star backstage after the show. The happy recipients of that experience sent us a great photo of themselves and Hugh taken on the night (below). This fundraising event was a fantastic opportunity for regional Bendigo Bank branches to work together for a common cause. It was a great effort by all involved and a fantastic example of community support for an important local health organisation. 4 Men s Shed update. The Mt Eliza Men s Shed Steering Committee have had a busy few months. They ve made some great progress with the renovations and refurbishment of the shed s premises at the rear of the Mt Eliza Country Club and they expect to open the shed soon. The group have been working with The Hon. Bruce Bilson MP to secure a community grant for the project. The local Lions and Rotary Clubs have also been keen supporters and sponsors. The shed now has a logo (below) and signage is also underway. Our Mt Eliza Community Bank Branch has been a proud supporter of the Men s Shed project for some time and we look forward to seeing it in operation. A Men s Shed is any community-based, non-commercial organisation which is open to everyone. The primary objective is to advance the health and wellbeing of its members. The Mt Eliza Men s Shed will provide a safe, friendly and inclusive environment where men can gather together and/or work on projects at their own pace, in their own time, and in the company of others. 5 Mt Eliza Music Festival. There was music in the streets of the village in early February thanks to the Mt Eliza Music Festival. We were a proud sponsor of the event, which was the initiative of local resident, Tim Meyer, and the Mt Eliza Chamber of Commerce. The festival included an afternoon of free music on the Village Green, and at various other locations around the shopping precinct. In the evening, many local venues, cafes and restaurants hosted musical entertainment and kept the vibrant atmosphere going well into the evening. Our Mt Eliza Community Bank Branch team lent a hand as volunteers on the day manning the information and first aid marquee from midday until 7.00pm. They answered enquiries and directed visitors, distributed sun block to the crowd, and provided water to volunteers and thirsty dogs. The event was a showcase for local and guest talent. The main stage hosted a variety of wonderful entertainers, including the popular band Woodlock and the very impressive Jess Sultana. Following the event, social media was buzzing with positive feedback and thanks to the event organisers and volunteers on making it such a great community event. WOW! What an absolute cracker of a day we had at the Mt Eliza Music Festival yesterday. The atmosphere in the town was electric and the way in which the village represented itself was a true reflection of what our community has to offer, said event organiser, Tim Meyer, after the event. It was a fantastic success, and we ll definitely be looking to run it again next year, said Trish Stamp, President of the Mt Eliza Chamber of Commerce.
