14 Degree programmes 14 The structure of study programmes at ETH Zurich is aliged with iteratioal stadards: three-year Bachelor s degree programmes are followed by Master s degree courses ruig over 18 moths or two years. Achievig a doctoral degree takes a average of three to four years after the Master s degree. Bachelor s degrees ETH Bachelor s degree programmes impart fudametal kowledge i mathematics ad other basic scieces, together with the theoretical ad methodological kowledge of the selected disciplie. Eight out of te Bachelor s studets erolled at ETH Zurich have bee through the Swiss educatio system. Their iitial year of study at ETH is quite demadig, ad culmiates i first-year examiatios. Fortuately, 90 percet of all studets who sit the first-year examiatio successfully complete their Bachelor s degree, equatig to aroud two-thirds of all ew etrats. Master s degrees 95 percet of Bachelor graduates go o to complete their Master s degree at ETH Zurich. They make up aroud two-thirds of total Master s studets. Roughly 10 percet come from other Swiss uiversities ad 25 percet from foreig uiversities, with more tha 2,500 iteratioal studets applyig for a place every year. ETH Master s degree programmes deepe studets kowledge ad specialist traiig, ad qualify them to eter a professio. Research is a sigificat part of the curriculum. The Uiversity offers its studets a stimulatig iteratioal eviromet at Master s level, which is a ideal preparatio for their future workig life or for doctoral studies. 94 percet of Master s studets successfully complete their degree course. Most of the studets graduatig from the Uiversity take their kowledge ad skills ito the Swiss job market. Well over a fifth of studets take their educatio a stage further by completig their doctorate at ETH. Doctoral studies Aroud 40 percet of all doctoral studets are graduates of a ETH Master s programme. The other 60 percet come maily from uiversities abroad. The ETH Board has rise to the challege by lauchig the Iitiative for Data Sciece i Switzerlad ad the Swiss Data Sciece Ceter, which ETH Zurich operates as a joit veture with EPFL. I a series of iterdiscipliary projects, ETH researchers are developig ew approaches to processig ad aalysig large volumes of data efficietly. For example, ETH Zurich is leadig the atioal High Performace Computig ad Networkig Iitiative, aimed at developig ew approaches i the area of scietific simulatio. The Max Plack ETH Ceter for Learig Systems is also ivolved i cuttigedge research: scietists from ETH Zurich ad the Max Plack Society are studyig the fudametal mechaisms of complex systems ad developig techiques for learig systems that process data i ew ways. 30 A drivig force for the ecoomy 30 ETH Zurich is a drivig force for idustry o may differet levels. The Uiversity educates highly qualified professioals ad works closely with idustry parters to research techologies ad techiques which ofte feed directly ito ew products. The fruits of the efforts are plai to see: every year, ETH research results lead to the filig of aroud 90 patet applicatios. May of these ivetios are commercially exploited by the researchers themselves. Each year, members of the Uiversity use the results of their work to set up 20 to 25 spi-off compaies, may of which the develop ito successful ew busiesses. The iovative spirit of these youg etrepreeurs is also reflected i the fact that ETH spi-offs regularly wi top prizes i competitios for youg busiesses.
