3 photo: Naomi Schiphorst photo: Naomi Schiphorst Schaulager Ruchfeldstrasse 19 CH-4142 Basel photo: Naomi Schiphorst The Schaulager ('viewing warehouse') is neither museum nor traditional warehouse It keeps the Emanuel Hoffmann collection in optimal condition and is primarily accessible for specialists: conservators, curators, researchers etc The heavy outer wall is built up in layers and its outer surface scratched, exposing the pebbles excavated on site This material is not only a visual expression of weight and storage but also, as a result of its great inertia, an essential factor in the interior climate control On one side the box is somewhat indented, creating a forecourt, so that the entrance side is visible from great distance It appears to be guarded by a small building with a gabled roof The courtyard-like space radiates urbanism and publicness Schaulager is thus not simply an anonymous box on the urban periphery, but rather a place that is active and self-confident, expanding the public dimension of the city of Basel to the south, towards the new district of Dreispitz/Münchenstein Project is not public! 5 photo: Beat Bühler photo: Beat Bühler Albisriederhaus Conversion Albisrieder-Strasse Zurich en/sozialzentrum_albisriederhaushtml After winning the design competition, huggen_berger converted the Albisriederhaus, which had been a community centre since 1934, into a regional social welfare centre with offices and consulting rooms The refurbished façades do not immediately reveal the fundamental changes that have taken place behind them The glass façade was reopened and the articulation of the main part of the building, with its striking concrete buttresses, was emphasized with colour The main problem was the transformation of the large hall into two low-ceilinged office floors The architects' solution was to site an access corridor along one side, emulating the height of the former hall - the false ceiling ending here in the form of a gallery What distinguishes this conversion is the undogmatic ease with which the architects have assimilated the old building and transformed it into something new - obscuring the chronology and abandoning the prevailing diktat of contrast between the old and the new photo: Beat Bühler 2004 huggen berger City Council of Zurich Axel_Simon Monday - Friday , tel:

7 photo: Milo Keller 9 Pavilions Chemin des Bosguets 1400 Yverdon-les-Bains The Parc des Rives was once a marshy area, often flooded After the level of the lake it borders was stabilized by engineering works, this stretch of land was reclaimed To this end, two canals were excavated at either end of the park The design of Localarchitecture, in association with landscape design agency Paysagestion, adds a promenade alongside these canals, highlighting the boundaries of the park by deliberately clearing a vast void in the centre For the construction of nine pavilions that dot the promenade, the architects drew inspiration from various historical processes of timber production Made entirely of braced planks of wood, the pavilions are constructed according to the post and beam principle Each one has two load-bearing walls of different heights connected by a sloping roof They are disposed thematically around the park in a way that underscores their different functions: toilets, music kiosk, picnic table, refreshment stall, pedal-boat rental and meditation photo: Milo Keller 2007 Main designer, Landscape architect Localarchitecture Paysagestion Town of Yverdon-les-bains Manuel_Bieler 7

10 photo: Heinrich Helfenstein photo: Knapkiewicz & Fickert Four Apartments Wiesenstrasse Winterthur This small, yet intriguingly complex building is irritating The body of the three-storey liverwurst-coloured block is folded several times as it traces the boundary lines of the property It seems compact, but projects oddly: the top storey has a triangular terrace cutting into its volume and spreading it apart, two low annexes connect to the property next door, and various window formats are distributed without any apparent logic Elegant it is not At the recessed entrance, white marble frames the door - a moderately representative touch heralding the staccato beyond: a chequerboard of red and white marble covers the floor From both outside and inside, it is almost impossible to understand the way the different flats interlock without looking at the plan; it is an assemblage of scenes rahter than an integrated whole Nevertheless, no one entering the building can remain indifferent It is as if several generations already lived here; what bigger compliment can we give a house? photo: Heinrich Helfenstein Project is not public! 2005 Knapkiewicz & Fickert AG Kaschka Knapkiewicz Axel_Simon 10

11 photo: Thomas Jantscher photo: Thomas Jantscher Bernex Crèche Chemin du Signal Bernex The composition of this crèche by Genevan architects Aeby & Perneger, tends to disguise the customary reference points one expects to find in a building designed for very small children There is no mimicry of a child's world, no false adult projection of a childish universe There is no clever colour coding to help with the identification of places, no break in scale to aid the child in its perception of space The form of the six-faced building, which does not try to set up a dialogue with the surroundings, its internal composition and the surface finishes all tend towards abstraction In the centre of the building, reached through a door in a translucent membrane, is the oval psychomotricity room which is lined with corrugated acrylic glass Cut off from the external world, it does not correspond to normal sensory perception Perhaps it is in spaces such as this that a child could develop a personality that transcends the often overly rigid traditional setting of kindergartens photo: Thomas Jantscher Public access unknown! 2007 Aeby & Perneger architectes associés Commune de Bernex Manuel_Bieler 11

18 photo: Ralph Feiner photo: Ralph Feiner Vineyard Estate Gantenbein Im Feld CH-7306 Fläsch This exclusive wine estate is a family run business, situated at the edge of gently sloping vineyards The extension to the vineyard exists out of 3 simple buildings that form a small courtyard 2 existing single storey buildings have been completed by a new structure The basement has 8 mushroom-columns, and forms an extension to the fermentation cellar, which is half sunk in the ground At courtyard level is a hall where the grapes are pressed, and at the top are the rooms for tasting wines It's a pragmatic, yet aesthetically pleasing building The concrete skeleton frame is filled in with bricks which are turned and have open vertical joints Together with the ETH Zurich these wall elements were assembled by industrial robots The open-jointed brickwork gives the facade an image of stacked grapes It provides sun shading and ensured an almost constant temperature for an optimal fermentation process Transparent polycarbonate sheeting provides protection against wind and moisture photo: Ralph Feiner 2007 Bearth & Deplazes Martha and Daniel Gantenbein Naomi 18

19 photo: Ralph Feiner photo: Ralph Feiner Skilift Carmenna Carmenna 7050 Arosa This is a chair cable lift of which 3 stations were designed: in the valley, in middle and on the top They all match their design The roof of the first station has multiple angles and spans from the ground up, over the large garage and the entrance and exit of the cable lift Its shape integrates the station into its environments in winter it is completely covered in snow; in summer overgrown by grass as if the lift is part of the mountain The chameleon-like character also visually reduces the prominent size of the base station The striking angular entrance facade has a translucent polycarbonate sheeting All stations are built with lightweight materials such as plastics, corrugated metal sheeting and wood, because of limited access to the area The steel-frame construction was brought up to the site by helicopter The interior is painted in Neon-red and -green These shrill colors have enough power in clear sunlight, match the loud world of winter sports photo: Ralph Feiner 2001 Bearth & Deplazes Arosa Bergbahnen Naomi 19

20 photo: Nazar Leskiw photo: Nazar Leskiw Central Signal Box Münchensteinerstrasse Basel This is a railway utility building in Basel, near the Guterbahnhof Wolf called Signal Box and has an exterior cladding of copper strips that are twisted at certain places to admit daylight Herzog and De Meuron won the Pritzker prize in 2001, the jury explained: "The beginnings of most architects practices consists by necessity of small projects with budgets to match It is these early buildings with great constraints that test an architect s talent for original solutions to often ordinary and utilitarian commissions In the case of Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron, the railroad signal box was such a project They transformed a nondescript structure in a railroad yard into a dramatic and artistic work of industrial architecture, captivating both by day and night" Project is not public! 1999 Herzog and De Meuron Schweizerische Bundesbahnen SBB, Anlagen Management boeboe photo: Nazar Leskiw 20

21 photo: Maarten Helle photo: Maarten Helle Stadelhofen Station Stadelhoferstrasse 8001 Zurich Stadelhofen Train Station, built in the early 1980s, is a major transportation junction for the Zurich area The original design consisted of a 300 metres long terminal building, running along a curved railway line, which itself runs along a hillside in the town's centre In 1990, Santiago Calatrava received the assignment to add a new third track to the existing train station In order to accomplish this, his design envolved excavating part of the hillside to add the track, only to restore the hillside in part on top of the new structure This way the new track has an open, naturally lit platform, while above ground space was created for walkways photo: Maarten Helle 1984 Santiago Calatrava HelleBeelden Depending on departure times Swiss Railways operates regional train services through Stadelhofen However, the station is only for regional lines, and is not the main station in Zurich You can reach it from the main station in about minutes by tram (No 11, going south) 21

22 Housing Schwarzpark Gellertstrasse Basel This project contains a great generous public housing because of both their spatial and their material quality Most of them have four bedrooms in a compact container located on one end of an urban park The insertion of the building into the grounds of the park by means of a folded block reduces its visual impact It incorporates various measures that contribute to the saving of energy and sustainable consumption, this without giving up a design that allows for maximum enjoyment of the area photo: Ruedi Walti Project is not public! 24 photo: Maarten Helle photo: Maarten Helle Pius Church Meggen Schlösslistrasse Meggen The exterior of this cubical building in Meggen,, doesn't reveal anything about it's contents; only it's bell tower and a little cross on the roof hint at it's sacriligious function The façade, which looks like a steel frame contruction, is actually made up of very thin translucent plates of 'Penthelian Dionysos' marble (28 mm thick) As translucent as painted glass windows in other churches, the marble lets through daylight in warm tones of brown and yellow, to create a special ambience inside the church photo: Maarten Helle 1966 Franz Füeg HelleBeelden The church is open to visitors all day However, during religious ceremonies (Saturday evenings and Sunday mornings) you may not walk around in the church As the church has a unique ambience, it is frequently used for wedding ceremonies, too (mostly on Saturday afternoons) 24

25 photo: Ferit Kuyas photo: Camenzind Evolution Collective Housing at Zurich Seefeldstrasse Zurich This project, also called Seewurfel, proposes a possible alternative to individual luxury homes, which traditionally take up large amounts of space with a very low population density In this case, the low population density, with a maximum of two housing units per building, is complemented by a programme of offices on the lower floors, which generates activity in the area during the day, in spite of they do not affect to the density parameter The private garden that characterises the nearby villas becomes a series of public plazas which help to create interaction between those who use them The other main aspect of luxury homes, individuality, is achieved by creating differences in the built volumes as well as in common areas using varied materials and finishes photo: Reinhard Zimmermann Project is not public! 26 photo: Evan Chakroff photo: Evan Chakroff Ricola Storage Building Baselstrasse Laufen 13FB7F610F47C6 This is a mechanized warehouse had to be built for herbs and herbal throat drops The structure appears to rest on ribs which can be seen protruding below the bottom-most of these layers They are attached to the slab which has been cast directly on the rocky ground forming the foundation of the warehouse Because of the open structure which is formed, the yellow colour of the thermal insulation can be detected between the panels The only exception to this is on the side exposed to the weather, where a silver foil offers additional protection against moisture The architects have given various reasons for the shape of the shell All of them have to do with the stacking of materials: planks piled to dry, or panels of cement, or even the shelves of the new hall In images like these, which they called upon when creating the design, the function and construction of the warehouse are rendered congruent in a complex fashion (text from website Ricola) photo: Evan Chakroff Project is not public! 30 photo: José F García Martín photo: José F García Martín Kunstmuseum Winterthur Extension Museumstrasse Winterthur The extension of the Winterthur Museum of Art, built as a low-cost construction, creates additional space for the next decades The extension also had to include a car park The new building simply consists of a parallelepiped attached to the rear of the city art gallery A covered passageway connects the new extension to the neoclassical main building designed by Rittmeyer & Furrer in 1915 The exhibition rooms are rectangular spaces with a sawtooth oriented to the north An objective of the design was to create exhibition spaces which shouldn't compete with the works of art A simple grid is used to divide 1000 m² of space into different rooms of varying sizes and proportions Walking from room to room, the visitor enters them from different angles and experiences their dimensions in different ways Three large windows allow visitors to look out and give sense of direction The building is built as a galvanized perforated box; the façades are covered by u-glass, placed vertically 1995 Gigon Guyer Architekten Jose_Garcia photo: José F García Martín 30
