PhD studentships News Prfessr Jhn Stewart, ur Directr fr nearly five years, fficially retired at the end f January but will retain a part-time psitin as Cdirectr f the Centre with his successr, Prfessr Peter Kirby, University f Oxfrd. Peter takes up his pst with GCU at the beginning f April and until then, Dr Janet Greenlees and Dr Vicky Lng have kindly agreed t step int the breach and act as Interim Directrs until Peter arrives. Jhn will be spending mst f March in New Zealand as a Visiting Prfessr with the University f Auckland. Sister Marie Hilda, Child Guidance Clinic, Glasgw University f Glasgw Jhn is cntinuing his research n the Histry f Child Guidance and presented papers n the subject at St Jhn s Cllege, Oxfrd and at the Department fr Educatin in Lndn, at the end f last year. We had anther new additin t ur staff at the Centre when Dr Karly Kehe jined GCU frm UHI at the beginning f December. Karly s research interests lie in the relatinship between natinal identity, religin and gender in mdern Britain, Ireland and Empire. Her current research n the McClement Prject, fcuses n Irish Cathlic surgens in the Ryal Navy. Dr Vicky Lng had an article published in, At Wrk in the Wrld: Prceedings f the Furth Internatinal Cnference n the Histry f Occupatinal and Envirnmental Health (San Francisc: UC medical Humanities Press, 2012). The title f the article was, The Trades Unin Cngress and the Plitics f Industrial Health in Britain, Vicky has als been busy with presentatins, ne at the Institute f Histrical Research as part f their Disability Histry Seminar Series, n Illness r disability? Cnceptualising the lng-stay patient in pst-war mental health services ; and anther at Nrthumbria University s Stigma and Mental Illness wrkshp, by invitatin.

2 Fllwing n frm the successful cnference n the life f Dr Lachlan Grant that Dr Annie Tindley rganised in Ballachulish last September, she and her clleague Dr Karly Kehe will publish the first article frm this prject in the Jurnal f Scttish Histrical Studies later this year. With the same grup f researchers and medical practitiners, Annie is pursuing a related prject which examines the impact f the Dewar Cmmissin n the Highlands ne hundred years after its riginal findings were published in The reprt, cmmissined by Sir Jhn Dewar, prvided the impetus fr the establishment f a Highlands and Islands Medical Service. Annie s grup is currently bidding fr Wellcme Trust Public Engagement funding t supprt the prject which has already attracted interest frm the Scttish Parliament and the Westminster Parliament where mtins f supprt are presently being prpsed. The prject has als received publicity frm an article published in the Daily Recrd at the end f January. Dr Ryan Jhnsn was awarded a Teaching Excellence Award in Histry fr He is presently wrking n tw publicatins: the first is an edited cllectin with Anna Greenwd, titled Beynd the State: The Clnial Medical Service in British Africa, which has been accepted fr publicatin by Manchester University Press in their Studies in Imperialism series. The secnd is a bk, based n his thesis, titled, Rethinking Imperial Trpical Medicine: Health and Hygiene in Britain s Trpical Clnies, Ryan s clleague at Strathclyde University, Dr Matt Smith, gave a seminar in Manchester n the histry f ADHD (Attentin Deficit Hyperactivity Disrder) at the beginning f the year and fllwed that up in February with a seminar in Cambridge n the Histry f Fd Allergy. Recently, he s been shrtlisted frm 470 applicants fr the AHRC/BBC Radi 3 New Generatin Thinkers initiative and in March he will cmpete against 50 thers fr a chance t becme ne f ten BBC Radi 3 s resident New Generatin Thinkers! The funding will supprt an internatinal cnference t be held in Halifax Nva Sctia in June 2012, entitled, Ireland and Empire: Seafaring, Slaving and Salvatin in the Nineteenth-century Atlantic Wrld.

3 Events Annual Lecture: 15 December 2011 The Centre welcmed Prfessr Ludmilla Jrdanva f King s Cllege, Lndn, t Strathclyde University just befre Christmas, t give this years Annual Lecture. She gave a fascinating presentatin n the subject f, Prtraiture, Health and Medicine, which was well received by her audience. Fllwing the presentatin, the audience were treated t a glass f wine and a mince pie! Prf. Ludmilla Jrdanva at GCU in December. Spring Seminar Series: The Spring Seminar Series gt ff t a gd start n 8 February 2012 with a presentatin by Dr Neil MacGillivray, University f Edinburgh, jintly rganised by the Centre and the Scttish Histry Grup s Civil and Uncivil Sciety Series. Dr MacGillivray s subject was, The medical and plitical impact f the chlera epidemic in Sctland. This was fllwed by Dr Carsten Timmerman, University f Manchester, (22 February), n, Recalcitrant Disease: lung cancer, and hw t write histry f medicine withut prgress, and Dr Gavin Miller, University f Glasgw, (29 February) n Winifred Rushfrth and the Davidsn Clinic: a case study in the verlap f psychtherapy, Christianity and New Age spirituality. The latter had been pstpned frm Nvember due t industrial actin. Pstgraduate Dinner: On 22 February, fllwing Dr Timmerman s presentatin, the Centre staff and pstgraduate students repaired t an Italian Restaurant, Din s in Sauchiehall Street fr meal; an event which is fast becming established in the Centre s calendar. They were jined by GCU s Executive Dean f the Schl fr Business and Sciety, Prfessr Jhn Wilsn and the PVC (Research), Prfessr Sue Sctt. By all accunts, a gd time was had by everyne!
