The house s rectangular n shape, wth one-storey addtons on the rear elevaton. The Alexander House s topped by a gable roof from whch extend three dormers on the facade and one on the rear elevaton..do&le-hung wndors feature smple surrounds and are flanked by. shutters, The facade s well-balanced n ts spacng of domclrs and wndows. A. large gabled dormer wth pared wndows extends from the roof n the center of the facade. Ths dormer s flanked by tko small, flat-roofed - dcmers. ll1 three 6ormers are covered n wde clapboard. n the center of the facade s a one-storey, flat-roofed porch. Ths porch s supported by four square, wooden colm~s wth Dorc captals. Plasters resemblng the colum*ls flank the centered entry. The entry features double doors flanked by sdelghts and top?& by a fanlght n a wesb-lke pattern. A large dormer projects from the rear elevaton. Ths domer features a gable roof and two double-hung wndows. One-storey addtons to the rear are also covered n narrow clapboard and utlze the sane features as the man body of the house, such as Dorc-captal plasters. The nteror plan of the Alexander Mouse ncludes center halls, upstars and downstars, connected by a sngle-flght starway, W~!O rooms are on each sde of each hallway, upstars and downstars. The starway features a square newel-post and turned balusters, nteror door and wndow trm s heavly molded and features corner blocks Orgnally the Alexander Rouse featured a porch whch spanned the wdth of the facade. Ths porch was sup?orted by delcate, turned posts. Pror to 1910, the roof of the house st12ported only two large dormers, one on the faeade and one on the rear. :.% n 1910 the ktchen and dnng room,whch were connected to t>e house by a walkway, burned. Also destroyed n ths fre was a sleepng porch on the south elevaton. The fre brought about a remodelng of the house, The two small dormers were added, and the porch on the facade was changed- Addtons were made onto theaxear elevaton. Also durng the remodelng, the archtect n charge changed the plan, double front cntry to the elaborate present entry havng sdelghts and fanlght.' The nteror ~alls and floors of the man body of the house retan the orrjnal handhewn logs; however the coverng over these logs has recently been changed- The old coverngs were removed, and wood--gran panelng now covers most of the ~7a115, and hardwood covers the floors. The Alexander House rerna3.n~ n excellent condton and s carefully mantaned by the present ab.mers. Restng on ts orgnal ste, the Alexander House s a sgnfcant Local landmark.

Constructed c. 1835, the house stands near the cornunty of Scott, Arkansas, &out twelve mles southeast of Lttle Rock. The :muse was constructed by Chester Ashley, whb was one of the nost rnp~rta'nt men n the hstory of- Arkansas- Ashley was a lan29wner, a wdely known lawyer and a Unted States Senator from Arkansas, He owned much of the land n Scott and mantaned the house as hs country hone. For many years the estate was called "Ashley Mll Plantaton." Ashley's assocaton wth the bouse s an mportant as?ect of ts sgnzcance-.... Chester Ashley was one of the most mrrortant fgures n the hstory of Arkansas- Born n Amherst, c;assachusetts, on June 1, 1791, Ashely grcw up n Hudson, New York. He graduated from Xllams College n 1813 and attended Ltchfeld Law School. Ashley com_oleted la;^ studes n, the. : offce of Elsha Wllams at Hudson, New Yark., At the age of twenty-seven, ~hester Ashley moved to-~dwardsvlle, llnos, and set up a law offce. From llnos he moved to St. mus, whexe he met Xllarrt Russell, a well-known land speculztor. n 1819 Ashley moved to ~ttle ~ock. He soon became nvolved n land ltgaton nvolvng the captol's beng moved from Arkansas Post to Lttle Rock. Chestcr Ashley s often referred to as the "father of Lttlc Rock," due to the fact that he acqured the ttle to muc3 of the land on whch the tom was bult. They settled tuzlve nles southeast of Lttle Rock at Scott. For several years Arthur L. Alexander was a bookkeeper on t5e Fred Bryson Plantaton. On XaveAtr 10, 1897, Arthur Lee ~lcxnder marred Otela George, who,was born zt Fends andng, Arkanszs. Lke her ht~sban?, Otela Alexacder came frcn a dstngushed Lnzage. The George famly came from Gemany n The famly were wealthy merchants n Germany and, upon ther settlemnt n Lttle Rock n 1833, agan became successful busnessmen. ' y. Stronqly encouraged by hs h-fe, Arthur Alexander p~rchased the Ashley -Y.ll Plantaton and took possesson the frst week of December, t was through the unque verbal persunsveness of Otela Alexander that the purchase was brought about. At the tme of the purchase Arthur Alexander had only $100 n cash. r Otela XLexander was a woman of drvng energy. n addton to rasng a f mly of fve chldren, she -<:as nvolved n many constructve actvtes. Her work on the Pententary EoarZ led to her appontment to the Natonal Board of Prson t7orkers. S5e organzed the Hornan's Exchange of Lttle Rock, whch was supprked by the Catholc Church of the Docese af Arkznsas. Ths organzaton fomed a means for the elderly and undcrprjvledged. Ths provded for a much more stable local economy. 1 Arthur L. Alexander was responsble for the formaton of the Scott! Cotton Groxers Assocaton, the frst cotton co-operatve assocaton 1 forned n the Unted States. Alexander's progressve and scentfc farmng methods brought spectacular results. Many offcals of the Untcd States Department of Agrculture came td S cott to study hs methods. Aztl~ur Lee Alexander ded December 7, 1938, n Scott. The eldest of the fve Alexander chldren now resdes n the house and farms the plantaton. Ths son, Wllam George Alexander, was born Decmeber 13, Before assumng hs farmng career, he was apponted to and attended the unted States Kaval Academy at Annapols, Maryland. Thus, the hstorc Alexander House s re?resentatvz of the hstory of two men whose contrbutons ranged from local to natonal sgnfcance.
