His MCEER work, with Professor William Petak, focuses on overcoming obstacles to enhanced seismic safety. As a part of this research, Alesch and Petak are modeling healthcare organizational decision processes in connection with California policy requiring seismic upgrade of acute care hospitals built before 1973, with special emphasis on the contextual setting within such decisions are made. Drs. Alesch and James Holly have been conducting research on the long term effects of natural disasters on businesses, not-for-profits, and municipal governments since Together, they have isolated variables associated with business failure or success following natural disasters and studied the effects of natural disasters on municipal finance in seven states and more than a dozen municipalities. Their initial work was funded by a one-year grant from NSF. Since then, they have been funded primarily by the Public Entity Risk Institute and the Center for Organizational Studies, University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. Collaborators and Other Affiliations: Collaborators and Co-Authors James Holly; Peter May; Elliott Mittler, Robert Nagy; Robert Olshansky; William Petak; Craig Taylor; Kathleen Tierney. Graduate and Postdoctoral Advisors: All are deceased. Thesis Advisor Dr. Alesch served as major professor on 93 successfully completed masters theses and served as a committee member on a similarly large number. Only one student, Andre Le Duc, is active in a field in which he might be a reviewer. The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay does not offer doctoral degrees.

20 Synergistic Activities Overview Dr. Dargush conducts research in computational mechanics, earthquake engineering, structural control and sociotechnical modeling. He has developed finite element and boundary element methods, along with the corresponding software, for structural analysis and design. Recent work with Prof. A.J. Aref has focused on the development of a new flexibility-based large increment method (LIM) for nonlinear structural problems. Additionally, he has expertise in constitutive modeling of hysteretic and viscoelastic materials, in nonlinear analysis, and in fracture mechanics. He has also worked toward the development of a mechanics-based approach to problems of structural control. This latter effort led to the publication of the first book on passive energy dissipation systems, co-authored with Prof. T.T. Soong. Currently, he is collaborating with Professors Petak and Alesch from the social sciences to develop methods for sociotechnical decision support in multi-hazard environments. Dr. Dargush has published over sixty papers in archival journals, a half dozen book chapters and numerous conference papers.
