5 AIA Honolulu Bylaws Revision: PROPOSAL TO CHANGE: 1) ARTICLE 6.1 Membership; and 2) ARTICLE Directors Terms This proposal is supported by the 2018 AIA Honolulu Board of Directors and is offered for approval by the general membership at the AIA Honolulu Annual Business meeting on September 17, The following AIA Honolulu Bylaws changes are proposed: A. Create a second Associate AIA Board Member position B. Increase the Associate AIA Board Member positions from (1) to (2)-year staggered terms Resulting outcome: Pending approval, the total number of Associate AIA members will increase to (2), each with staggered (2)-year terms effective Jan. 1, Both Associate AIA board member positions will be voted on at the September 17, 2018 Annual Meeting. Reasoning: As an outcome of repositioning, the Institute and your local AIA Chapter are responding to a documented need to focus additional attention and resources to attract the younger generation to AIA to insure continuity of the profession. We are jointly committed to: Create expanded leadership opportunities for qualified associate members Support the path to licensure Facilitate a culture of mentorship among AIA firms in Hawaii Consider economic constraints impacting associate members including making membership more affordable to associate members, in concert with outreach efforts to encourage broader firm support to promote a culture of licensure.* *The AIA Honolulu Board of Directors voted at their August 2014 meeting to reduce the local dues rate for associate members by 50% (to $84/year for local dues) beginning with the 2015 dues renewal cycle. As recommended by the AIA Honolulu Board of Directors, this proposed Bylaws change would further increase the perceived value of AIA membership at all levels of the organization (AIA and Assoc. AIA). 10 Hawaii Island Section Director Candidate ( ) Position: (1) Hawaii Island Section Director (One Candidate) John Hetherington, AIA Qualifications: John L. Hetherington AIA, is now a fourth-generation architect, having been accepted by the State of Hawaii, licensing board based on 12 years of experience including the completion of the IDP and passing the Architectural exams in February of Originally from the Chicago area, John worked as a draftsman for his father and grandfather for several years, before moving to Pittsburgh, PA to work for several non-profits including the Imaginarium, which focused on using the arts as a tool for education, and the Pittsburgh Children s Museum as an exhibits designer. Also, he developed a traveling exhibit for the Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation, called Architecture the Building Art. Having moved to the Big Island in 1990, he has worked here as a carpenter and cabinet maker. He was an actively licensed contractor (C5, C6) from 1998 until 2006 and worked as a construction project manager as well. Statement: The AIA, of course, is a support group for its members and an advocacy group locally and nationally for the profession and for our responsibilities for public health, safety and welfare. And yes, we all love the fleeting glory of creating a beautiful design, but there are a lot of nuts and bolts involved in bringing a project to fruition. The passing on of ethics, constructive attitudes and practical knowledge to the younger generations of aspiring architects, to me, is a key function of the AIA. The architectural tradition I was raised in, expressed the profession of architecture as a service industry, assisting clients to realize their dreams, guiding them in wise decisions and in community service. I have been very fortunate in my life, to have received mentoring both from family and since being in Hawaii, from AIA members, mostly informally. I have worked with several aspiring Architects here on Hawaii Island, loaning study material, providing guidance on how to focus their efforts in studying for their exams, and encouraging them to follow through with their dreams.
