1 Newsletter October 2006 AIA West Jersey P.O. Box 4015 Cherry Hill, NJ FALLINGWATER PHOTO BY DAVE LUMMIS
2 A Message from the President We have had a very busy month at AIA West Jersey. I would like to Thank John Terry from the state DCA for attending our September meeting and presenting a review of the NJ Rehabilitation Subcode and a overview of the NJ code changes to expect over the next few months. In the end of September a number of members took the field trip to Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob. See the article and pictures in this bulletin. Plans are already being made for next years fall field trip, watch future bulletin's for news and location. I am happy to say that the results from the photography competition have been good. The jury will review the photographs in the next few weeks and select the winners. AIA West Jersey has had very good feedback for starting this program from members throughout New Jersey. We look forward to this program continuing to grow in future years. For the last two membership meetings of the year, we have a presentation on Architects and Design Build scheduled for October 12th at Anthony's in Haddon Heights. November 9th is the West Jersey Annual Meeting to be held at Aldo Lamberti's in Cherry Hill, including reports on the state of the organization, election of 2007 officers, and a program on the different facets of Brownfield Re-development. This year two scholarships were given to students who live in the West Jersey area. Congratulations to 2006 awardees Kevin Dummer and Kathleen O'Reilly. We welcome all ideas and suggestions. 3 AIA/WJ Scholarship Awards West Jersey AIA has long had a strong committment to encouraging and supporting scholastic achievement through generous yearly donations to the Scholarship Fund. This year we are proud to announce that two of the recipients are from the West Jersey region. Kevin Dummer of Pennsauken, and Kathleen O'Reilly of Mt. Laurel are recipents of this year's award along with William Moese of Patterson, and Stephanie Wong of Parsippany. Over the last 19 years AIA West Jersey has strived to make our commitment to the Scholarship Fund a lasting one. This year I am proud to say that AIA West Jersey has reached our goal of providing a self-sustaining scholarship for!our regional students through donations by AIA West Jersey to the AIA New Jersey Scholarship Fund. In our continuing effort to support!our local architectural students we are launching a!new architectural school design competition to be awarded at our March Dinner Meeting.!This design competition will be directed towards the architectural schools immediately adjacent to our region. The money raised!at our 20th annual golf outing will go directly towards the awards given to the winning students. In this effort we are ever striving to!connect the AIA/WJ community with the architectural students of our area. With your support,!as over the past!20 years,!our new endeavor!will be able to last!several more decades.! Please mark your calendar for Monday, October 16, 2006 to join us at Riverton Country Club for this momentous event. Photo Contest The first annual Photo competition has already been a huge success. We have 11 entries and 53 photographs. The photos will be judged in the coming weeks by a panel of three distinguished jurors, who will chose not only the winners, but also the thirteen photos that will be highlighted in the AIA-WJ 2007 Calendar. All of the photos will be on display at the 2007 Inaugural Dinner in January, where they will be on display, and eventually auctioned off during a silent auction. Please join us as we honor Kevin and Kathleen for their accomplishments at the dinner following the Golf Outing on October 16th. AIA150 Update AIA West Jersey along with AIA New Jersey and the other 5 chapters within New Jersey have two major programs in planning for the 2007 celebrations for AIA 150th birthday.!!grants are being applied for now through AIA national to help with these initiatives.! The first is a coordinated event to have 150 AIA architects go to 150 schools throughout the state and give presentations to 6th graders on architecture and their role in designing livable communities.! We need volunteers to give these presentations to local schools in April of next year, please consider going to your local school.! If interested in participating west@aia-nj.org, or suggest a!school to add to the list. The second initiative is a commemorative guidebook of the "150 Best New Jersey Buildings and Places".! This guidebook will also be the centerpiece of the New Jersey Center for Architecture website that will debut in 2007.! This Center will become a repository of architectural knowledge from a New Jersey perspective by growing to include more buildings and places, articles, and much more. Nominations are still being accepted for the buildings and places that will make up this New Jersey list. If you know of a place in our West Jersey area, or in New Jersey, that you think should be included please let us know via west@aia-nj.org. Page2
4 AIA/WJ Tour of Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob BY Dave Lummis AIA-West Jersey hosted a fantastic weekend field trip on September 23 & 24 for an in-depth look at Frank Lloyd Wright's creativity and design process with visits to the Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob residences, located in southwest Pennsylvania. Fallingwater is one of Wright's most widely acclaimed works, was competed in 1939 for Pittsburgh department store owner Edgar J. Kaufmann and his family as a weekend house. The Kaufmanns enjoyed the beautifully wooded property and the waterfalls of Bear Run, which runs through the property, and asked Wright to design a house near the waterfall. Much to their surprise, Wright designed the house over the falls, integrated with the surrounding massive stone boulders. The design was constructed with few changes to the original design. Fallingwater was constructed of reinforced concrete and sandstone quarried on the property. Several layers of dramatic concrete 'trays cantilever over the waterfalls. All details, furnishings, colors and finishes of the house were carefully considered by Wright. The Kaufmann's lived in the house until 1963, when the house, its original contents and grounds were entrusted to the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy. The I. N. Hagan house, also known as Kentuck Knob was constructed in the mid-1950's on an eighty acre wooded property in the mountains approximately seven miles from Fallingwater. The Hagans knew Edgar Kaufmann and asked Wright, who was now 86 years old, to design their house. Wright's design was a Usonian House, Wright's vision for well designed, affordable homes on a massive scale. FALLINGWATER PHOTO BY DAVE LUMMIS Page 3
5 AIA/WJ Tour of Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob cont. The customized, single story Kentuck Knob includes the rich details and furnishings you would expect from Frank Lloyd Wright, with beautifully integrated forms and materials. Today, the house is still privately owned, but is open for tours year round. The surrounding grounds are interspersed with sculptures of famous contemporary artists. Tours of these two masterpieces bring to life Wright's organic ideals and his interaction with his clients. Visits to Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob are a must for anyone with an appreciation for Frank Lloyd Wright and his creative genius. 6 AIA/WJ Heart of Camden A Call for Volunteers AIA-West Jersey will be looking for volunteers next spring to assist with the rehabilitation of homes for the Heart of Camden Housing. Heart of Camden, a past recipient of AIA-West Jersey s Community Service Award, is a local non-profit community development corporation dedicated to the revitalization of the South Camden neighborhood known as Waterfront South. They acquire vacant properties and completely rehabilitate them for sale to low-income homeowners. They also prepare the families for homeownership through homeowner counseling, credit counseling and assistance in qualifying for mortgages. Since 1984, over 100 houses have been completely rehabilitated, providing the families with a sense of dignity and independence. While most of the rehabilitation work is performed by professional contractors, volunteers play a vital role in preparing the houses for rehabilitation with clean-up and demolition work to gut the houses. The volunteer work will be performed on a Saturday, beginning at 8:30 am and finishing up at noon. The exact dates of the work days will be scheduled early 2007 and will be announced in this newsletter. For more information, please contact Dave Lummis, ph: (856) or dlummis@ignarrilummis.com. Officer Elections: AIA-West Jersey elections will be held at the Annual Meeting held on Nov. 9th. The slate of officers for 2007 is as follows: President - Grant Peatman, AIA President Elect - David Lummis Treasurer - Mark Keen, AIA AIA Secretary - Carlos Castro, AIA Vice President - John Glaviano AIA Past President - Kimberly Bunn, AIA Get Involved: AIA West Jersey has been actively programing events and trips that will help everyone with their professional development and personal enjoyment of Architecture. However, we need your help. There is a strong need for volunteers to participate or chair committees that hold special interest to them. Your participation will ensure that important issues are addressed and relevant programming is provided. Our chapter is not the largest, however, with your help we can build and maintain a vital and robust asset to our members and to the surrounding communities that we live and work in. Please consider joining our efforts, as well as encouraging your co-workers to join and participate in AIA West Jersey. Below is a listing of the Committees. If you are interested in more information, or would like to volunteer, please contact Kimerly Bunn, President AIA/WJ at west@aia-nj.org!
