1 AIA Abilene 2018 Design Awards Call for Entries AIA Abilene would like to invite participants to enter the 2018 Design Awards Competition, which serves to recognize and promote excellence in architecture and design in the Big Country and beyond. A jury of respected architects will review each submission based on quality of design, resolution of the program, innovation, technical ability, environmental response, and/or social impact. The jury s selections are announced and honored at the AIA Abilene Design Awards Presentation. Winning projects will be promoted within the Abilene community, cultivating an ongoing public interest in architecture and design. SCHEDULE Submission Deadline: Friday July 13, 2018, 5:00 p.m. Includes entry forms, application fees and submission documents Jury Panel Meets: Thursday July 26, 2018 Jury panel meets in Austin to review submissions and assign awards Design Awards Announcement: Tuesday, August 14, 2018, 11:30am Awards will be announced during the August chapter meeting held at the Center for Contemporary Arts. A reception and exhibition open to the public will be held at a time and date yet to be determined. ELIGIBILITY Eligibility to participate in the Design Awards is as follows: 1. AIA Abilene Architect Members in good standing are eligible to enter projects in every category regardless of project location. 2. AIA Abilene Associate Members in good standing are eligible to enter projects in both Unbuilt categories. AIA Abilene 2018 Design Awards Call for Entries

Students from colleges and/or high schools within the jurisdiction* of AIA Abilene are invited to enter the Unbuilt Student category with the sponsorship of a faculty member at their school and/or AIA member. 4. Any Architect currently licensed to practice architecture in the State of Texas may submit a project built within the jurisdiction* of AIA Abilene. 5. Built projects must have been completed after January 1, 2013 except for the special requirements in the Urban Design/Master Planning category. On projects where construction is phased, only completed projects are eligible. 6. Where one is not the sole author, all participants in the design work must be credited on the Entry Form. 7. Any pre-existing architectural elements on the project shall identify the original Architect. For instance, an addition to an existing building should identify the Architect of the existing building where practical and should clearly delineate for the juror the addition from the existing. *As defined by Exhibit A Texas Architects (TxA) Component Map. CATEGORIES Built Projects Built projects may be submitted for recognition in the following categories. Each project may only be submitted in one category. The jury reserves the right to move a project from one category to another. Architecture greater than 50,000 SF Architecture less than 50,000 SF Residential Architecture This category shall include single-family dwellings and multi-unit projects up to 20 units. Large scale apartment or condominium projects should be submitted under one of the two Architecture categories above. Interior Architecture Renovation/Restoration Restoration, renovation, or rehabilitation of existing buildings including adaptive reuse. A non-integrated addition to an existing building should be submitted under one of the two Architecture categories above. AIA Abilene 2018 Design Awards Call for Entries 2
3 Divine Detail Recognizes architectural ingenuity in the use of a particular material, detail, or building technology Urban Design/Master Planning Must have an active client. Submittals may include urban design projects, planning programs, civic improvements, environmental programs, and redevelopment projects. Portions of the project must be under implementation; however, the whole project need not be completed. The project description must include the implementation schedule. Un-built Projects On the Boards Uncompleted or unrealized work for an active client. Conceptual This category is for theoretical work. Project types may include building design, sustainable technologies, competition entries, installations, art, student thesis or studio project, travel sketchbook, architectural rendering and the like. SUBMISSION MATERIALS Note: Any submission with the firm name on the submission on anything other than the Entry Form shall be disqualified. All entries must be anonymous. Your name and/or firm name should not appear anywhere except where indicated on the Submission Form document. For every submission, please prepare the following: 1. Entry Form (PDF file type) Entry forms may be found within this document. Complete the form and title the file in the following format: EF-Your Project Name.pdf 2. Project Description (PDF file type) Complete project description form with a written description of the project in a maximum of 250 words and one image. Please use the attached format as a reference in putting yours together. The description should include program requirements, sustainability goals, design solutions and anything AIA Abilene 2018 Design Awards Call for Entries 3
4 else that you find pertinent for understanding the project. The image shall be a representative photograph or drawing for identification (max size 5 x 7) landscape or portrait on the same page as the project description. Title the file in the following format: PD-Your Project Name.pdf. CAUTION: Do not identify the Architect or designer on this sheet. 3. Project Presentation (PDF file type) For each project, submit a PDF file 11 x 17 landscape containing a maximum of 20 pages. Submittals may not contain transitions, sounds, animation, video clips, panorama movies, hyperlink or link to other files. Images should be a minimum of 150 DPI for better display resolution. Title your pdf in the following format: PP-Your Project Name.pdf Do not identify Architects or designers in the file name or on any image. Pre-existing architectural elements not designed as part this project but that is visible on the image should be clearly marked as preexisting and the prior Architect should be credited. For all projects, except as noted, include site plan and aerial photography All plans and elevations should be clearly marked with North arrow or directional identification. For Renovation/Restoration, indicate re-existing conditions with plans and/or photographs. For Interior Architecture projects, include floor plans and one exterior photograph of the building for reference. 4. Image for Publication (TIFF file type) Provide one 8 x 10, 240 DPI image titled in the following format: IM-Your Project Name.tiff. The image will be used for the Design Awards Publication, in which all submittals will be published. Collect the 4 submittal items listed above into a single compressed zip folder titled in the following format: Project Category-Your Project Name.zip This zip file will be the only item you submit. 5 Entry Fees $100 per entry for AIA Abilene Architect Members $250 per entry for Architects outside the AIA Abilene jurisdiction $50 per entry in the Divine Detail category $25 per entry for Associate Members or Students JURY PANEL AIA Abilene is honored to have the following jurors serve on our 2018 Design Awards jury panel.** Michael Malone, FAIA Gregory Ibanez, FAIA Eva Read Warden, AIA The jury listing is current as of the release of this Call for Entries. Alterations to the jury list may take place due to schedule conflicts. AWARDS PRESENTATION AND EXHIBITION Winning entrants will be invited to bring their clients, consultants and guests to the AIA Abilene Design Awards Presentation. The location, date and time for this event has yet to be determined at the time of this Call for Entries. During the presentation, AIA Abilene will announce the awards and honor each project team including architects, consultants, and clients. Associate Members and Students will also be announced and honored in their respective categories. Winning entrants will be required to furnish a digital image for a 30-inch wide x 42- inch long vertical format board per winning project for exhibition. These boards will be printed at the expense of AIA Abilene. This image shall have the name of the project, architect or firm and team members or student on the image that AIA Abilene will get mounted. AIA Abilene 2018 Design Awards Call for Entries 5
6 FINE PRINT AIA Abilene reserves the right to disqualify entries or projects not submitted in accordance with the stated rules. AIA Abilene is not responsible for errors in submissions. Submission of an entry is your authorization for AIA Abilene to publish your project. Awarded projects may be submitted for publication by the AIA in professional journals, newspapers, and social media. Photo copyright: the entrant s signature on the entry form implies that the submitting firm has the rights to use the photographs and constitutes written permission for AIA Abilene to use photographs for the AIA Abilene Design Awards Presentation and related publications. 10 Jury Panel Michael Malone, FAIA Principal, Malone Maxwell Borson Architects, Inc. Michael Malone FAIA is the founding principal of Malone Maxwell Borson Architects, Inc. a full service architectural firm based in Dallas, Texas. This year celebrating 25 years of creating the built environment, his firm has specialized in the design of retail and commercial interiors, single and multifamily homes, and corporate marketing centers. The award winning practice is frequently published in professional and shelter publications and widely recognized for design. The firm was recognized as the AIA Dallas Firm of the Year for A 1981 graduate of Auburn University, Michael returned to college in 2001and received a Master of Architecture from The University of Texas at Arlington. Michael is a frequent contributor to professional journals and is a Contributing Editor for Texas Architect magazine. He is the author of The Architects Guide to Residential Design published in 2010 by McGraw Hill. Active in the Texas Society of Architects, he is the past President for Additonally he served as President-Elect in 2014, as well as Vice President for Outreach and as Chairman of the Publications Committee and the Chairman of the Texas Society of Architects Design Committee. He initiated and chaired the first three Texas Society of Architects Design Conferences in 2011, 2012 and He is a frequent speaker at professional meetings and conventions, with his programs focused primarily on the importance of design, the role of drawing in design, building materials and issues affecting the architectural profession. He is the 2014 recipient of the Tau Sigma Delta Silver Medal for Design from Texas Tech University. In 2015 he received the President s Medal from AIA Dallas in Recognition of Extraordinary Service. 11 Gregory S. Ibañez, FAIA Principal, Ibañez Shaw Architecture Gregory S. Ibañez, FAIA, serves as Principal of Ibañez Shaw Architecture in Fort Worth, Texas. Greg received his Bachelor of Architecture from the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago in The recipient of twenty-three AIA Design Awards at the state and local level, Greg was awarded the Charles R. Adams Award for Design Excellence by AIA Fort Worth in recognition of his career accomplishments. In 2012 he was elevated to the AIA College of Fellows for his accomplishments in architectural design. Greg is a member of the Board of the Texas Society of Architects, as well as a past President of AIA Fort Worth. At the municipal level he has served as Chair of the Fort Worth Public Art Commission and as a member of the Historical and Cultural Landmarks Commission. He has also been a Visiting Adjunct Professor of Architecture at Texas Tech University and The University of Texas at Arlington. A founding Board member of the North Texas Chapter of Docomomo, Greg has been a guest speaker for the Dallas Architecture Forum and the Texas Society of Architects convention. Eva Read-Warden, AIA Principal, The Arkitex Studio, Inc. Eva arrived in Bryan, Texas, in 1994, after living and working in Mississippi, Pennsylvania, and New Mexico. She joined the The Arkitex Studio Inc in 1997 and became a partner in As a principal of The Arkitex Studio, Eva has managed commercial, institutional, and residential projects. She has a particular passion for projects that serve the community and for historic buildings and places. Eva was President of the Brazos Chapter of the American Institute of Architects in 2000 and Eva participated at the state level from 2012 through 2015 as Chair of the Historic Resources Committee for the Texas Society of Architects.
