Our interview in their office (pictured) close to Villamartin, went as follows: The CBPG: Hello John and Andrea! Can we start our chat by asking how long your company has been established in the Costa Blanca? John: We set up Dolphin Properties SL 15 years ago, having initially had a holiday home in the Costa Blanca area for 20 years and accumulating a lot of knowledge about the property market over that period. In addition to the immediate attraction of a better life in the sun, and both of us having real estate experience myself in the UK and Andrea in Hungary we saw the opportunity of creating a nice family business. We now own our offices here in Calle Richard Wagner (close to Captain Morgan s Bar). The CBPG: Would you have done anything differently if you could start again? John and Andrea: Apart from not moving here sooner, no. We are now a well-established small family company that has been able to move with the times, in a good and popular location. We continue to enjoy challenges of working in an ever-changing market and love the lives we are able to lead in this sunny, friendly country! The CBPG: How many staff members/offices does the company have at this moment? John and Andrea: We are a full time staff of four, all with extensive knowledge of the Spanish property market, laws and regulations, and of the local area, its attractions and benefits. Elaine, with 30 years experience real estate both in London and Spain, and Paul with 20 years in London and Spain have amassed an amazing knowledge of living and working here. John and Andrea, with their young family in addition to their market knowledge here, the UK and Europe, are well placed to be able to advise on schooling, and healthcare, as well as the pros and cons for any young family planning to come to Spain to start a new life. The CBPG: What do you think is the secret of your success? John: Our success over Paul John the past 15 years is down solely to our honesty and transparency. The many recommendations we receive is testament to this in addition to our believing that a no pressure approach is the best way to build trust between buyers and sellers alike. Having been through the process of buying a property here ourselves, has helped us understand what a huge decision even thinking of buying a holiday home, can sometimes be some of our current clients were just looking 3-4 years ago. We also try to move with the times and target buyers from different countries by networking with agents along the coast who have the same approach to business, and standards, as ourselves in particular, listening to our clients needs. The CBPG: Why did you choose your current location to start up your business? Why would you recommend that people should come here? John and Andrea: We are just 20 minutes south of Torrevieja, in Villamartin, a little less busy and close to four fantastic golf courses, many blue flag beaches, marinas, shopping malls, schools, health facilities, and lovely countryside. This area really has it all! Office Torrevieja, with its markets, marinas, nightlife, and great restaurants, and, further to the south, Pilar de la Horadada and the Mar Menor. We are perfectly placed for both, and can now offer properties on the Costa Calida, Mar Menor, La Manga and Murcia regions, from a new office in San Javier. The CBPG: How do you see the property market moving in the foreseeable future? John: The market here has seen dramatic changes Andrea over the last few years and is now moving in a steadily-rising direction. With new builds and sensibly-priced resale properties moving fast, we see this trend continuing for the next 4-6 years and proving good value for money. Prices are on the rise, with forecasts of 5-6 years good capital growth ahead. With the easy accessibility to this area from most European countries, safety, healthcare and climate, it s hard to see why this should not be the case. The CBPG: What do you see as the main challenges for Estate Agents in the next few years? John: Challenges for agents will be, and have always been, to move with the times in terms of technology, and providing clear, transparent and honest options for clients, whilst targeting different nationalities at the right time, depending on a country s economic outlook. Competitive selling fees and the internet will always play a part, but as a starting point, clients still want to meet real people, in a real office, and know that they will receive a good after sales service long after they have purchased. Elaine I don t see that changing; agents who have been here for many years and survived all the changes and challenges have proved they can do all of the above, and will continue to be successful. The CBPG: If there was one thing that you could say made you feel different to the hundreds of other Estate Agents in the Costa Blanca, what would that be? John and Andrea: As a small company we offer a very personal service to our clients. We try to get to know our clients to better understand their needs and ideas, meaning we can source properties that meet or indeed exceed their expectations. We treat our sellers in the same way, as they have many different reasons for selling and we can often find solutions that suit their needs too. Listening to the client has been one of the fundamental reasons for our success over the years. The country has drawn people to its glorious shores for centuries. From Spain come spectacular writers, the likes of Miguel De Cervantes, Lope De Vega, Carlos Ruis Zafon, and the inimitable Gabriel Garcia Lorca. Not only its literature, but its history is also full of adventure, mystery and discovery. The Spanish Armada was a formidable force in the 16th century, coming up against British Naval forces under Queen Elizabeth s Sir Francis Drake. Spain s Empire was the envy of many nations and the Spanish character can still be seen today throughout South America, Cuba and the Caribbean, and the Philippines. This really is a spectacular nation of passion and energy! But what about the Spain of today? Synonymous with pristine beaches, gothic architecture, the cinema of Pedro Almodovar, music, sangria, flamenco, summer holidays, sizzling romances and, of course, amazing food. This country has so much to offer the international community and it is no surprise that millions of visitors flock to Spain each year (68,000,000 in 2016!) to soak up the distinctive Spanish atmosphere and culture. A major part of Beautiful Madrid that culture is of course, Spanish food, which has long been popular among people of all nations. With a fantastic climate for growing it is no surprise that food by the CBPG s roving reporter, Terry Stewart is such a central aspect of Spanish culture. The quality of Spanish produce is just so wonderful; from olives, olive oil, Valencian oranges, tomatoes and so much more; not to mention Spain s fabulous range of wines. The vineyards of Aragon stretch over rolling hills - this area produces the Old Barcelona Spanish Cariñena grape, a protected growing area from the early 1930s, testament to its quality and character. However, no discussion of Spanish wine is complete without mention of the most famous, classic Spanish libation, grown in the Rioja and Navarre region in the north of Spain, with its distinct peppery, almost smoky flavour. A perfect wine to enjoy with the nutty flavours of Spanish Manchego cheese and spicy chorizo sausage. There are just so many delicious facets to Spanish cuisine, it is simply impossible to talk about them all in one short article, however, the classics are absolutely undeniable. Tortilla Espanola No discussion of Spanish food is complete without mentioning the quintessential Spanish tortilla. This is an absolutely delightful (and filling!) dish made of eggs, potato and onion. It is almost like a more substantial omelette and can be eaten on its own, with a little salt, with some Spanish salsa, or as part of a bocadillo (Spanish sandwich, usually served in a long baguette). In fact, this way of eating tortilla remains a staple among Spanish students, the tortilla bocadillo, is filling and the perfect fuel for studying, but more importantly, it is also cheap! Tortilla is often ordered as part of Spanish tapas, and who can imagine a more social and exciting way to eat than to share a table of lots of little individual dishes simply bursting with exotic Spanish flavours? Tapas There are so many different dishes that can make up a table of Spanish tapas, and if you have never tried it, then I would suggest just picking five or six from a given menu, because whatever arrives on your plate, it will be delicious. Again, it is impossible to discuss every possible tapa, but here are some of the classics! From gambas pil pil (prawns fried with olive oil, chili and garlic); chorizo frito al vino, Spanish sausage made with paprika, fried in red wine: croquetas (essentially a Spanish take on potato croquettes, usually made with ham, Tossa de Mar beach Beautiful Barcelona cheese, or in some regions bacalao (cod fish); pimientos de pardon (small green fried peppers), served simply with sea salt these are a real treat, and not spicy despite their fiery appearance! However, no Spanish tapas meal is complete without Patatas Bravas - small fried potatoes, served with a pleasantly spicy tomatobased sauce. Wherever you order Patatas Bravas the sauce will always vary slightly, as every restaurant seems to have its own (closely guarded!) recipe. It is also not unusual to have this dish served with alioli (home-made garlic mayonnaise) as well as a spicy tomato sauce. A bowl of traditional Patatas Bravas to accompany an ice-cold beer is a Spanish pleasure that everybody should try. Absolutely delicious! Gazpacho Although travelling through Spain is an absolute privilege, it is undeniable that at some times during the year, it can also be almost unbearably hot. Testament to this is the recent Lucifer Barcelona beach heat wave that swept across Europe. At times like this, the idea of a hot and spicy dish is not a welcome one. No, what is required is something that is going to cool down the palate, not heat it up. It is perhaps unsurprising therefore, that another traditional Spanish dish is a cold soup made from vegetables. This may sound strange, particularly if you are used Terry - the CBPG s roving reporter to the hearty soups of the UK; piping hot tomato, filling scotch broth and the cure-all, chicken. All served steaming on a winter s evening, what could be more comforting and warming than that? Well on a roasting Spanish afternoon, that is the absolute opposite of what you want. Enter the solution: Gazpacho - made from liquidised and carefully sieved, peppers, cucumber and tomato, with added very good quality extra-virgin olive oil and garlic. You can add breadcrumbs or sherry vinegar if you wish, but it is unnecessary. The flavours are so fresh and clean that you can feel it revitalising you from the very first taste. It is sometimes actually served with ice in the bowl, and is always served chilled out of the fridge, not at room temperature. Not only is it the perfect antidote to the baking heat of the afternoon sun, but it is hard to imagine a healthier meal! Paella Elegant Madrid Once you have escaped the heat of the afternoon, enjoyed your siesta and had the prerequisite pre-dinner G&T, it is undoubtedly time to enjoy a traditional Spanish dinner, and you cannot get more traditional than paella. Paella is available all over Spain but it is a dish that originates in Valencia, and the Valencians are rightly proud of this. It is a rice-based dish, and this is probably due to the fact that the Moors from North Africa introduced rice through trading ports like Valencia on Spain s southern coast over 1,200 years ago. It usually contains freshly-caught seafood and is cooked in a large flat dish, in which The Girls In Barcelona it is also served, flavoured with saffron, which gives it its distinctive orange colour. However, paella can contain anything that the maker wishes to put in it. It is often cooked for celebrations, and can be cooked over fires outdoors in enormous dishes designed to feed entire, extended families. This communal way of cooking the dish makes paella a feast for the eyes as well as the mouth! There is so much more that could be said about the variety and flavour of Spanish cooking this really is only a fraction of the mouth-watering delicacies that Spain has to offer. However, if you do find yourself in the country, my above suggestions should give you some idea of the amazing diversity and quality of the food on offer, and I would urge you to try absolutely anything and everything you can! The past month has seen GBP/EUR slide to an eightyear low of , but has now spiked to an eight-week high of GBP/USD has bounced from a low of US$ mid-august to a one-year high of US$ EUR/USD climbed from US$ to US$1.2087, although it has now fallen to trade around US$ What s been happening? The pound dropped to an eight-year low against the euro towards the end of August, as nervous investors bought the safe EUR following another missile test from North Korea. The euro also climbed higher on the building expectations that the European Central Bank (ECB) will discuss in depth the tapering of the enormous quantitative easing programme in the October meeting. Further support for the euro came from ECB President Mario Draghi, after he claimed that the strength of EUR exchange rates was not something the central bank was planning to target as part of its monetary policy. The GBP/USD exchange rate was able to hit a oneyear high this week after the latest UK inflation data. Price growth shot up to 2.9% - a joint fouryear high while core growth rose to a six-year high of 2.7%. The latest strong data saw bets of a rate hike from the Bank of England (BoE) shoot up. The US dollar continued to struggle with the softening odds of another interest rate hike from the Federal Reserve this year, as well as much resurgence in the tensions between the United States and North Korea. On top of this, the US also had to bear the brunt of Hurricane Irma, which many feared would cause severe damage to the US economy and take a chunk out of GDP this quarter. USD was able to somewhat bounce back this week, however, as Irma struck with less force than was expected. Data has been largely disappointing over the past four weeks in particularly the labour data for August. What do you need to look out for? The minutes of the latest BoE meeting claimed that monetary policy could need to be tightened by a somewhat greater extent over the forecast period than current market expectations. If UK data holds steady or improves, expect the pound to shoot higher as market hopes of a rate hike climb. Brace for worsening GBP exchange rates if the economy shows signs of weakening further. Markets are expecting the ECB to make plans to taper its quantitative easing programme at the end of October, so any suggestions this will happen will push the euro higher. Meanwhile, the US dollar will continue to fluctuate based upon tensions surrounding North Korea. In the Tour de France, equipping your bike with a small electric motor is called mechanical doping and is considered cheating. The Electric bike (E-bike) has seen its fair share of humiliation over the years, stigmatised by Lycra-clad sceptics across the nation who see it as a form of cheating. Recently, however, following the lead of countries like Germany and the Netherlands, thousands of people across Europe and the UK have been peeling away from the peleton of e-bike haters and purchasing a pedelec themselves. So why the change in attitude? Electric bikes have numerous benefits: they re speedier than a regular bike; much more eco-friendly than a car; and, they require less effort, put much less impact on your knees and joints; are easier on hills; and are great for carrying the shopping (although originally thought of as a cure for the lazy, they actually provide a good level of exercise). E-Bikes are particularly beneficial for those over 50 or for people who have or have had health and medical conditions which would normally prevent them from cycling. While you still have to turn the pedals yourself, if you require an extra push to get up a hill or keep riding when you re tired out, you can just switch the motor on and off whenever you like. Exercise is necessary in our lives, as we all know. People who are physically active are much less likely to develop heart disease, diabetes, cancer, stroke, depression, disabilities in old age or to die prematurely. Despite these benefits, many people still do not exercise and they always have the same excuses: they don t have time or they aren t fit enough to exercise. Potentially, electric bikes could address these problems they can be used instead of the car on short or medium length journeys. Even with the added assistance of a motor people who have not been exercising much would still get a meaningful workout. Electric bikes are simply bicycles with a battery added. Most of them are around 22-25kg in weight and have 36volt lithium batteries which can travel for around kms at speeds of between 20 and 25km per hour. This was the alarming realisation foisted upon me by Matthew Engel s witty, cantankerous yet nonetheless persuasive polemic That s the Way it Crumbles: The American Conquest of English. Because by English, I mean British English. Despite having been born, raised and educated on British shores, it seems my mother tongue has been irreparably corrupted by the linguistic equivalent of the grey squirrel. And The infiltration of US coffee chains has made ubiquitous phrases such as Can I get a decaf soy latte to go? I m not alone. Whether you re a lover or a loather of phrases like Can I get a decaf soy latte to go?, chances are your vocabulary has been similarly colonised. Speaking on the wireless in 1935, Alistair Cooke declared that Every Englishman listening to me now unconsciously uses 30 or 40 Americanisms a day. In 2017, that number is likely closer to three or four hundred, Engel hazards more for a teenager, if they use that many words in a day. But how did this happen and why should we care? After all, as a nation we ve been both invaded and invader, and our language is all the richer for it. Words like bungalow, bazaar, even Blighty, have their roots elsewhere. Heck, go far enough back and isn t it pretty much all just distorted Latin, French or German? The first American words to make it across the pond were largely utilitarian signifiers for flora and fauna that didn t exist back in Merrie England. Moose, maize and tobacco were among them. But there were others, too, that in retrospect might seem laden with significance words like plentifulness, monstrostity and conflagration. With no means of swift communication or easeful passage between the two countries, American English merely trickled back into its source to begin with. But as the balance of power between Britain and her former colonies shifted, as America ascended to military, economic, cultural and technological dominance, that trickle swelled to a torrent, washing away any kind of quality control. Cookies and closets Throughout the 19th Century, Engel contends, the Americanisms that permeated the British language did so largely on merit, because they were more expressive, more euphonious, sharper and cleverer than their British counterparts. What wordlover could resist the likes of ornery, boondoggle or scuttlebutt? That long ago ceased to be the case, leaving us with words and phrases that reek of euphemism passing instead of dying or that mock their user with meaninglessness, like the non-existent Rose Garden that political reporters decided No 10 had to have, just because the White House has one (it doesn t exactly have one either, not in the strictest sense, but that s a whole other story). Call me a snob, but there s also the fact that some American neologisms are just plain ungainly. I recently picked up a promising new American thriller to find elevator used as a verb in the opening chapter. As in, Ahmed was elevatoring towards the top of his profession in Manhattan. Nowadays, no sphere of expression remains untouched. Students talk of campus and semesters. Magistrates, brainwashed by endless CSI reruns, ask barristers Will counsel please approach the bench? We uncheck boxes in a vain effort to avoid being inundated with junk mail that, when it arrives regardless, we move to trash. It s understandable, of course. Sometimes, American words just seem more glamorous. Who wants to live in a flat, a word redolent of damp problems and unidentifiable carpet stains, a word that just sounds well, flat when they could make their home in an apartment instead? Sometimes that glamour is overlain with bracing egalitarianism it s a glamour untainted by our perennial national hang-up, class. The Spoken British National Corpus found in 2014 that the word awesome is now used in conversation 72 times per million words Take movie. The word has all the glitz of Hollywood and none of the intellectual pretensions (or so it might be argued) of the word film, which increasingly suggests subtitles ( foreignlanguage film is one of the few instances in which the f-word doesn t seem interchangeable with its American counterpart foreign-language movie just sounds odd). Other times they fill a gap, naming something that British English speakers have been unable to decide on, as is increasingly the case with ATM, a boring but brief alternative to cash point, cash machine, hole in the wall. It s often pointed out that plenty of these Americanisms were British English to begin with we exported them, then imported them back. A commonly made case in point is I guess, which crops up in Chaucer. When Dr Johnson compiled his seminal 1755 dictionary, gotten was still in use as a past participle of get. But as Engel points out, good old English is not good new English. Moreover, his beef isn t really to do with authenticity; it s more to do with our unthinking complicity. Because it s not just the cookies and the closets, or even the garbage, it s the insidiousness of it all. We ve already reached the point where most of us can no longer tell whether a word is an Americanism or not. By 2120, he suggests, American English will have absorbed the British version entirely. As he puts it, The child will have eaten its mother, but only because the mother insisted. The new Esperanto? For more than half-adozen years (I almost wrote more than a half-dozen ), I was a UK book columnist for Bloomberg News. Despite the nature of my beat, my identity as a Brit, and the organisation s proudly global nature, I was required to write in American English. A cinch, thought I, but even at the end of my tenure, I was still bumping into words my editors deemed Briticisms. ( Charabanc, sure, but fortnight? That one was a minor revelation, suddenly explaining the many blank looks I d received over the years from American friends.) Which is fair enough Bloomberg is, after all, an American company. And yet I can t help feeling a little retrospective resentment towards my British editors for all the Americanisms that I ve got past them unquestioned. Likewise, when I published a book in America, I was excited to find out how it would read after it had been Americanized, but I ve noticed it s fast becoming the norm for American works to make it into print over here without so much as having a z switched for an s or a u tacked on to an o. And if we can t rely on our publishers to defend British English None of this would matter if these imported words were augmenting our existing vocabulary. It s impossible to have too many words, right? But like some hoity-toity club, language seems to operate on a one-in, one-out basis. Engel quotes researchers behind 2014 s Spoken British National Corpus, who found that the word awesome is now used in conversation 72 times per million words. Marvellous, meanwhile, is used just twice per million down from 155 times a mere 20 years earlier. Cheerio and, yes, fortnight, are apparently staring at the same fate. Even so, you might ask, is this really such a bad thing? When my grandfather returned home from the front in World War Two, he became a firm believer in the unifying powers of Esperanto. Along with Volapuk, Ekselsioro and Mondlingvo, that idealistic tongue came to nothing. American English is succeeding where it failed. But it s hard not to feel that diminishing linguistic variance isn t shrinking the world. Engel rues the way in which our national character is going the way of London s Manhattanized skyline, reticence yielding to self-promotion. And then there s the very valid theory that you can t feel or think things for which you ve no language. A borrowed vocabulary, one that s evolved to meet the needs of people whose lives are subtly but profoundly different (ask anyone who s lived Stateside for a while those superficial similarities and familiarities soon fall away to reveal a decidedly foreign country), deprives us of fully experiencing our own. It s nothing short of a crisis of self-imposed serfdom, Engel says. A nation that outsources the development of its own language that language it developed over hundreds of years is a nation that has lost the will to live. It might seem tactless to bemoan the state of any branch of all-conquering English when so many other languages are being wiped out entirely. But ultimately, the battle isn t really one of British versus American English, but of individual experience versus the homogenising effects of global digital culture. For a provocative glimpse of where this might all lead, it s worth Engel s problem is less to do with individual words, like cookies as with the insidiousness of it all noting that Globish, a sort-of language (Engel s phrase) created for business types by former IBM exec Jean- Paul Nerriere, consists of just 1,500 words. Jokes, metaphors and acronyms are verboten, being too fraught with potential for misunderstanding. Personally, I think I d rather communicate in emojis. But here s hoping it won t come to that. Engel s book is certainly a wake-up call. Sorry, cri de coeur. Wait, better make that a call to arms.

Therefore, it is important to check: Electricity Water Resident s Association Fees The garbage collection The Property Tax The capital gain Regarding the legal situation of the property improvements, it is necessary to obtain the authorization to build and carry out improvements on the property. Even the minor works have to be authorized by the City Council. If the property is part of a Resident s Association, the consent of said Association is also required. If the modifications or improvements were not included in the Title Deed, there could be problems in the future sale of the property, and you could have complications in the future in case it was not detected in time. Therefore, you should detect and solve any setback now. Well, it s because our bodies are made up of approximately 90% water and water is needed for almost all bodily functions, such as circulation, digestion and excretion, so the more you drink the more effective these systems are! Did you know that water forms 90% to 92% of blood plasma - essential to allow the transport of blood, with its oxygen and nutrients, to our cells and the removal of waste from our bodies such as carbon dioxide and lactic acid. Water makes up 96% of our urine and is therefore essential for excretion and the removal of waste. If your urine darkens in colour it means that it has a high concentration of waste in it (this could lead to kidney stones) and is a sure sign that you need to drink more water to flush the waste out. Normal water balance in the body produces pale yellow urine. Water enables us to sweat - an excretory function and helps to control the body s temperature. During the extreme heat of the By Penny Wing summer, sweating can cause the body to lose in excess of 15 glasses of water a day! Water is part of our saliva and gastric juices which help us to digest food. Very often, the body s need for water is misinterpreted as hunger pangs. Bones contain approximately 25% water, muscles approximately 75%, so a lack of water leads to dry, brittle bones, stiff joints and a loss of muscle strength, power and speed. As a result, the skeletal/muscular systems become vulnerable to damage. Water is therefore vital for the well being of these systems. Water also lubricates our joints and protects the organs and tissues. The body requires at least 1.5 litres of water a day to prevent dehydration which occurs when the body loses more water than it takes in. Did you realize if you feel thirsty you are already dehydrated? Symptoms of dehydration include: Chronic fatigue; Lethargy; and Headaches. In the long term you could suffer from skin problems, rheumatoid pain or anginal pain. One point to remember is that it is possible to drink too much water if you drink at least 5 litres over too short a period of time you will get water intoxication. The sodium levels in the blood become diluted making the cells swell which in turn can cause nausea, headaches, confusion and in very rare situations, a coma. Finally, water that is still and served at room temperature is better for the digestive system then carbonized, or very chilled water. Having said that, if you can only drink it cold, better to do that than drink none at all!

Sir James, who founded the engineering firm Dyson, told the BBC such an arrangement would hurt the Europeans more than the British. However, former Bank of England chief Lord King said he was not impressed with preparations for failed talks. It is very important the UK has a fall-back position, he said. I don t think the negotiations are going in the way that we might hope, he told the BBC s Newsnight programme. I think you need a separate team that is responsible for ensuring that if negotiations do break down... then we are capable of saying if you don t want an agreement, we are capable of leaving and trading with you under, for example, WTO terms. It s not a first preference, but we can do it. NO SINGLE MARKET Sir James told the BBC s Today programme that Dyson, which became famous through its innovative vacuum cleaners, already pays the WTO tariff into Europe and it hasn t hurt us at all - we re one of the fastest growing companies in Europe. He said UK business did not need a transitional period to separate from the European single market, saying he thought the term single market was quite wrong. It s a series of different markets with different languages, with different marketing required and different laws... it s actually a very highly complex and broken up market, he said. Sir James added that business is about uncertainty. There s always uncertainty in business, about exchange rates, conditions in markets, natural disasters... Sir James Dyson says Britain will likely trade under WTO rules post-brexit on Radio 4 s Today programme I think uncertainty is an opportunity, and the opportunity here is actually that the rest of the world is growing at a far greater rate than Europe, so the opportunity is to export to the rest of the world and to capitalise on that, he said. DYSON DEGREE Sir James comments came as 33 undergraduates began studying at the Dyson Institute of Engineering and Technology. The student engineers have begun a four-year degree, during which they will be mentored by Dyson s scientists and engineers who will teach alongside academics from Warwick University. Universities Minister Jo Johnson challenged Sir James 18 months ago to help train engineers in the UK. Sir James said: It is a great opportunity, and I think a great step forward in the way that higher education is provided. We re paying these people, they re getting about 40 days a year more academic time than you d get at university, plus the fact that they re working with some of the best scientists and engineers in the world. BREXIT: BURBERRY S CHRISTOPHER BAILEY SEES ENORMOUS TRADE POTENTIAL The potential for UK trade post-brexit is enormous, according to Christopher Bailey, the chief creative officer of British luxury brand Burberry. German firms employ an estimated 400,000 workers in the UK ECONOMIC ISSUES ARE A PRIORITY, SAY UK AND GERMAN FIRMS Shared economic interests must be a priority in the Brexit negotiations, UK and German trade bodies have urged. The British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) and the Association of German Chambers of Commerce (DIHK) said uncertainty over business critical issues such as workers rights, tax and customs arrangements needed to be tackled. DIHK said the uncertainty was affecting German firms which traded with the UK. Most BCC members say they want at least a three-year transition period. The groups called for political leaders to build an atmosphere of mutual trust and constructive dialogue, to deliver clarity and certainty for businesses. With the third round of Brexit negotiations completed recently, a number of critical issues were still unresolved, while there are hundreds of practical and technical issues which also needed to be negotiated, they said. There is real business appetite from both sides for a focus on practical, day-today business concerns, and a desire for clarity on future trading arrangements, said BCC director general Dr Adam Marshall. The UK and the EU must begin work on transitional arrangements, particularly on customs, so that firms on both sides of the Channel have the confidence to make investment decisions. The UK is the third largest market for the export of German goods, while Germany is the UK s second biggest market for exports of goods and services. German firms employ an estimated 400,000 workers in the UK, while British firms employ around 220,000 workers in Germany. DIHK chief executive Martin Wansleben said German companies were concerned that Brexit would have a major negative impact, with more trade barriers such as extra bureaucracy, and stricter border controls, leading to higher costs. The terms of exit are still completely unclear. Many of our members are reporting that they are already shifting investments away from the UK in anticipation of these barriers, he added. But he told the BBC he hoped an antiimmigration climate would not endanger the UK s thriving creative culture. Being able to share ideas, to collaborate with people from other cultures and countries, is fundamental to any creative business, he said. Mr Bailey was chief executive of Burberry until July. He returned to a more creative role, handing the chief executive reins to Marco Gobetti. Asked on the BBC s Today programme what the potential was for post- Brexit Britain, Mr Bailey said it was enormous. I think it s a much smaller world today than it s ever been in terms of being able to trade, he said. The possibilities and the potential for growth, both locally here in the UK and overseas, is enormous, he added. Drawing on Burberry s experience, he said that Britishness resonates globally. Burberry is considered by many to be the quintessential British brand, thanks to the resilient popularity of its check scarves and trench coats that shoppers abroad regard as a classic British look. Mr Bailey described London as an energy hub for the creative industries and said the UK boasted the best design and art schools, attracting people from around the world. We ve got this creatively nourishing country that people want to feed off, he said. When asked whether he thought the political climate towards immigration might pose

Brexit effect Mr Bailey has previously expressed concerns about Brexit, signing a letter before the EU referendum last year warning it could put the economy at risk. His comments come a day after the chairman of the John Lewis Partnership, Sir Charlie Mayfield, said people should be under no illusions that Brexit is having some negative effects on the economy. Uncertainty is one of the consequences of this, and of course businesses never like uncertainty, because it makes it hard to plan for the future, he said. The fall in the pound - which is still lower against the dollar and euro, despite gains this week - has also made imports more expensive for retailers like John Lewis. Flying the flag Burberry has benefited from the fall in sterling since the Brexit vote, with tourists, especially from China, taking the opportunity to shop more cheaply on visits to the Burberry creative chief Christopher Bailey on Brexit opportunities and difficulties UK. The company also manufactures some of its products in the UK, providing another benefit from the weaker pound. Currently the Far East accounts for nearly 40% of Burberry s sales. The firm does not publish a breakdown for individual countries. Carla Busazi, an analyst with trend forecasters WGSN, said Burberry was in a strong position with its focus on exports and its clearly identifiable brand. I think it s good that a brand that flies the flag for Britain sees Brexit as a positive thing. I m sure there are a lot of fashion brands who are very concerned about what that might mean for them. It s going to be something some British brands are going to struggle with and designer brands who predominantly sell in the UK are going to have challenges ahead. Many British businesses are unclear what tariffs will be in place for trade between the UK and EU after Brexit. Sir James Dyson, who backs Brexit, said on Thursday that he expected the UK to leave with no deal, and trade under World Trade Organization tariffs. On Friday, Tim Martin, the chairman of pub chain JD Wetherspoon and a Leave campaigner, said it would be companies in the EU, not the UK, which would suffer from such an outcome. However, former Bank of England governor Lord King has said he is not impressed with the UK s preparations for a failure in the talks, saying it is very important that the UK has a fall-back position. Yorkshire on hold Brexit, and changes in the industry combined with changing consumer behaviour, have created uncertainty for Burberry, Mr Bailey said, resulting in the suspension of a planned 50m investment in Leeds. Burberry already has two manufacturing sites in Yorkshire, where its trench coats are made, but shortly following the Brexit vote last year the company said it was putting on hold the decision over whether to continue with the new development. Since we made that decision and bought that land a lot of things have changed in the world and as any responsible organisation, when you have these big shifts you need to reflect, said Mr Bailey. BBC Health Section Schizophrenia does not mean you have a split personality or automatically become violent, a mental health charity has warned. Rethink Mental Illness said a survey of 1,500 people showed that the condition is widely misunderstood. Schizophrenia commonly causes hallucinations, such as hearing voices, or delusions and can make people lose interest in life. But it should not be a dirty word or a term of abuse, the charity said. The organisation warned such myths are dangerous. One in 100 people is affected by schizophrenia during their life, but 45% of those surveyed thought the illness was much more common. Half mistakenly thought the illness was defined by a split personality and a quarter believed it definitely led to violent behaviour. But the reality is very different, a new campaign by the charity claims. It is not true that someone with schizophrenia can appear perfectly normal at one moment, and change into a different person the next, the Royal College of Psychiatrists says on its website. And although there is a higher risk of violent behaviour if you have schizophrenia, it does not necessarily make people dangerous. Comparatively, drugs and alcohol cause far more violence. People with schizophrenia are far more likely to be harmed by other people than other people are to be harmed by them, the psychiatrists Brain scans have discovered higher activity levels in part of the brain s immune system in schizophrenia patients than in healthy volunteers say. Schizophrenia can affect the way individuals think, feel and behave. Experiencing hallucinations is common and people often hear voices, which can sound very real and be critical and abusive, although they are all in the mind. Delusions can occur too, which means believing something completely and feeling like no-one else sees the world in the same way. Other symptoms can include depression, loss of concentration and feeling uncomfortable around other people. Some people also have painful feelings in their body. The Rethink Schizophrenia campaign said the illness can affect other aspects of life too - for example people with schizophrenia die 15 to 20 years earlier than the rest of the population on average. And only 8% of those with the illness who want to work are currently employed. The charity said this is because physical health problems are often missed or attributed to mental illness, and the side-effects of medication can cause complications. Change attitudes Brian Dow, director of external affairs at Rethink Mental Illness, said: It s about time we all got to grips with what schizophrenia is and what it isn t. Schizophrenia can be treated and managed, just like many other illnesses. It s not a dirty word or, worse, a term of abuse. He added that myths stopped people from getting jobs, forming relationships and getting access to the healthcare they needed. The symptoms of schizophrenia don t fit neatly into a box, everyone will experience it differently, he said. However, we can all play a role in rethinking schizophrenia, and helping to change attitudes, by learning to separate the myths from the facts. Prof Wendy Burn, president of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, said it was astounding that schizophrenia was still so widely misunderstood. To tackle the stigma that so many living with schizophrenia face, we have a huge task ahead of us in informing and educating the public, she said. We also need to ensure that more medical students choose psychiatry so that those living with schizophrenia have specialist doctors available to treat them. SEPTEMBER 17 NEWSLETTER FINCA SAN MIGUEL ANIMAL SANCTUARY Finca San Miguel de Salinas had its Summer Party on 26th August. It was nice to see lots of new faces, and nationalities! People from Spain, Germany, The United Kingdom, Belgium, Holland and Sweden came along and everyone had a great time. The party started about 6.00pm with the first act Mona and Sol in their bikinis and the Ice Mona and Sol after The Ice Bucket Challenge Bucket Challenge! Mona and Sol danced for a bit, then two of their sponsors threw the Ice Buckets! You could see from their expressions it was COLD but they did it, and raised around 1,000 about the cost of running the Finca for a whole month. A BIG thank you to all our sponsors! After Mona and Sol came the Dance School - Soul Dance - with 2 lovely shows: a modern one and a Flamenco one enjoyed by all. Then came the paella (a little late, for which we apologise) and while we were waiting for this, we drew the raffle, organised by Angela Richards with prises coming from as far afield as Holland, others donated by Judy Jones and Penny Wing. Again, a BIG THANK YOU to everyone who donated a prize! Thanks go also to Renee Flack and Christine (pictured) who donated some hand-made pieces of jewellery sold for nearly 200 all for the animals! Wonderful, thank you! Sol was also a lucky person, and won the Trike Tour donated by John and Paul, from Restaurant/Bar Wolfies in Blue Lagoon. If you would like to support Happy Animales Spanien - Finca San Miguel Eleonora van der Stap de Salinas, come along to CHEERS Bar/Restaurant in Eagles Nest on Friday 22nd September where there will be a Flea Market and Raffle. We have to report the sad news that Monika (Moni), one of our cake makers and volunteers, who helped at every Open Day or Party at the Finca, suddenly passed away on Monday morning 11th September. The majority of us keep money in a bank account. Why? Because it is easy, relatively secure, and easily accessible. There is also a Deposit Protection Scheme in place which covers the amount in your bank account up to 100,000 or 85,000. So far, so good? R eturns are not good, interest rates are hardly inflation-beating and your hard-earned cash is not really being put to work for you. In fact, the average savings account is paying less than 1% per year and some have even reduced to 0.2% or even 0.1%! S etting up a Spanish tax compliant bond is no more difficult than setting up a bank account, and, once you have invested, you have easy access to your money: regular, or one-off withdrawals, to suit your needs. What about growth on your savings? What is the alternative? - A Spanish Tax Compliant Bond The Deposit Protection amount has been reduced from 85,000 which was the previous compensation limit. This means that if a bank or building society cannot meet its obligations and subsequently fails, or becomes insolvent, the maximum compensation you will receive will be 85,000 or 150,000 for a joint account (husband and wife). So how does this look in reality? Consider this: 20,000 in an average savings account with a gross interest rate of 1% will pay: 20,000 at 1% pa, equalling 200 each year before tax. Any tax due is paid directly to the Hacienda and no Modelo 720 declaration is required for holders of this kind of Bond. The Bond can also be held jointly so there should be no liability to Succession Tax on the first death % The returns over the last few years have been: % % % % The growth on a Spanish Tax Compliant Bond is free of tax until a withdrawal is made -even then only the growth is subject to tax. The Bond is backed by an AA-rated financial institution which is subject to a strict legal and regulatory environment, to European Law, all applicable European directives and regulations and to meet European solvency margins. Under EU law, assets are to be used to repay policyholders should the company be wound up. Please remember that not all bonds are Spanish tax-compliant. The Olympic Pool and Garden Bar raised 1,000 We would like to thank everyone involved for all their hard work: Jilly s Bar in Algorfa put on an afternoon of music with an auction and raffle raising 1,347. The Plaza Golf Society chose our charity and donated 420 from a golf competition. Olympia Pool & Garden Bar in Mil Palmeras organised a pool competition with live music, a raffle, games, artisan market and art exhibition presenting Maria with 1,000. BRASS BAND SEPTEMBER NEWSLETTER Sorry to say but where is this year going? Summer has come and gone but Autumn brings the Band s annual Last Night of The Proms concerts. We have been doing these for some years now, and they have become one of the highlights of the Band s year, with flagwaving, singing and all the razzmatazz - just like the Royal Albert Hall! This year we are doing 2 Concerts: the first on Friday 13th October at the Theatre Capitol, Rojales; the second on the 14th October at the Union Musical in San Miguel. Both events start at 8.o clock. (see advert for full details). The proceeds from these concerts, as with all our productions, will be donated to Charity, as Band members perform free of charge. Both concerts will be conducted by our Musical Director, Mr. Brian Webber, who has performed personally in many Last Night of the Proms concerts at the Albert Hall, London in his past life as a professional string player.
