4 Minerva Gedempte Zuiderdiep HN Groningen In 1976 Blom prepared his first drafts for the new Academy of Arts in Groningen 'Minerva Academy' had to become a 'fort of art', bedded in the inner city of Groningen He designed a collection of smaller buildings, connected with the surrounding city by means of small stairs and alleys October 2nd, 1984, 'Minerva Academy' was opened by Queen Beatrix No sooner had Beatrix's car left the building than the academy was forced to shatter Blom's vision of openness for the academy's terraces A number of brazen burglaries gave the academy board no choice but to close off the accesses to the Ganzevoortsingel and the Kruithuisgang with high steel railings The enclosure also spelled the end of the main entrance on the inner courtyard The side entrance on the Zuiderdiep was given the status of main entrance Project is public! 7 La Liberté Laan van de Vrijheid GA Groningen La Liberté consists of two residential towers One is eighty meters high, the other one is forty meters They are built on a glass platform The highest tower consists of two building volumes, slightly shifted from one another The towers are connected by means of a pedestrian bridge Both towers have space for 120 three bedroom apartments As the complex is near to the highway, Perrault has designed the apartments as soundproof as possible The windows of the apartments are fully closed and only serve for the passage of light Perrault created an illusion of'open windows' by placing mirror glass panels These panels reflect the daylight and keeps the sound off The apartments are built on a glass platform that serves as office space The residential towers and the premises are separated by a covered terrace Perrault also designed the two gardens and the underground parking Public access unknown! 10 photo: DeZwarteHond photo: DeZwarteHond Media Building Groningen Helperpark ZA Groningen Until 1982 the Helpman power station, whose origin goes back to 1931, served as an electricity plant The enormous scale, the imposing character of the central hall, and the fact that the building was one of the first really large power stations, make this building an important part of the country's industrial heritage The suitable alternative use that was found was neither an exhibition space nor a museum, but a media building; a multi-occupancy building to be used by media-related companies A characteristic feature of the Helpman power station is the full height central section, the old turbine hall, with aisles containing storeys of different heights This typology makes the cross section of the building similar to that of a cathedral The spacious 'nave' is retained in the design, but the aisles are filled as efficiently as possible with 10,000m2 of floor space Project is public! 12 photo: De Zwarte Hond photo: De Zwarte Hond Residential Tower Kwelderland Kustweg 9933 Delfzijl In 2008, Delfzijl started a large scale urban renewal One of the new neighbourhoods that arise is Kwelderland The main qualities of this area are the location at the Dollard and the Wedge Just behind the dyke, in the middle of this marsh area, three peninsulas, with three residential towers will be realized The basis for the plan of the tower is to create an efficient spatial economic and brick building that fits into the maritime character of Delfzijl The tower has four apartments on each floor, around stairs and an elevator with two penthouses on the top floor Each apartment has a 90-degree outdoor area The living area is not included in the brick core, which creates a slender cruciform shape On the tower an unique element is effectively added; a panorama on every layer in an elegant flowing movement around the tower The undulating movement and the materialization of the deck refers to the marine environment photo: De Zwarte Hond Floor area/size m² De Zwarte Hond Ontwikkelingsmaatschappij Delfzijl Kuifje 12
13 photo: Giampiero Sanguigni photo: Giampiero Sanguigni Five Villas Sloep 9801 RG Zuidhorn The agricultural shed is typical of 'polder landscapes' in Groningen; a sober construction with a pitched roof, the slopes of which reach almost to the base of the building The outline of these houses by Onix is analogous to that of the traditional barn, with its preference for sloping surfaces over vertical walls Traces of a contemporary language can be found in the way the conventional form is complicated by cuts and blurrings and by the choice of materials - heterogeneous, but of the same colour which create continuity between façades and roof, making the whole appear as a unique project The building thus acquires the appearance of a volume from which pieces have been subtracted in order to increase the possibilities for the use of space by its inhabitants The oblique passageway containing the entrance separates the residential part from the garage, thereby reducing the bulk of the whole and generating physical and visual contact between surrounding terrain and the landscape photo: Giampiero Sanguigni Project is not public! 2006 Contractor Onix Zomers Bouwbedrijf Hollestelle Vastgoed Ontwikkeling Giampiero_Sanguigni 13
14 photo: Berend Schiphorst photo: Berend Schiphorst Lighthouses Rabenhauptstraat CB Groningen The lighthouse is a compact, urban apartment of 50 m2 that can be placed on top of parkings, warehouses, schools or other houses It's a minitower existing out of 3 stacked prefabricated modules, with a maximum height of 9 m The first module has an open construction to provide a large open roof terrace of 15 m2 underneath the apartment, next to the entrance The first 4 lighthouses have been realized in the centre of Groningen, on top of a bakery near Central Station The municipality supported the project and provides a perfect solution to a rising need for apartments in congested urban areas The light weight wooden prefabricated construction allows to be built on top of existing structures; it weights kg Providing a good roof structure by the host, the house can be put up in only one day The eventual costs of a Lighthouse depends on the amount ordered, the material costs, costs for the location and installation costs to connect it to sewage and existing structure Project is not public! 17 Educational Building UMCG Antonius Deusinglaan Groningen The new extension of the faculty of Medical Sciences is squeezed between a listed 19th century building and high-rise dating from the 1960s, all part of the University of Groningen It s also bordered by the new building for UN animal testing laboratories (by UN Studio) and extends from the newly emerging university plaza to the edge of the campus, which borders the inner city, creating a new portal between the town and the university grounds It houses the Orthopaedic Institute for Joint and Movement Studies with a main lecture hall and a large foyer connecting the institute s existing rooms It therefore has a joining function in urban and programmatic terms as well Some 1300 bicycles can be parked on the ground floor and the 3 upper storeys are used for teaching and research In the foyer a concrete wall rises to the highest point of the giant lecture hall This wall, Chromosome Technology in Concrete Relief, was designed in collaboration with artist Baukje Trenning photo: Bjorn Utpott Project is public! 21 photo: Drost + Van Veen photo: Drost + Van Veen Montessorischool De Dijk Wibenaheerd PB Groningen The Municipality of Groningen commissioned the seventies Montessori school in the district of Beijum to move into a better urban situation The most prominent landscape element, a historical dike profile along a canal, is integrated into the design of the school The corridor, which occupies an important place in Montessori education, follows the dike profile Several areas such as workplaces, library and the staff room, literally put out and create long sight lines across the channel The large hall is in direct relation to the sunken playroom This allows the hall as a stage with the audience in the playroom The eight meters wide staircase rises along the dike, and also serves as a seating object The white color of the building gives a fresh look and contrasts with the somber, gray-brown hues of the surrounding buildings photo: Drost + Van Veen Project is not public! 22 photo: João Morgado photo: João Morgado Ciboga Terrain Bloemsingel BZ Groningen The urban concept developed by the municipality extends the network of routes and views through the site The municipality's desire to establish 'openness' through an equal relationship between landscape and building was central to the success of the plan However this ambition had to be negotiated with the market requirements for programmatic density This led the municipality to create the concept of 'schotsen' A 'schots' is considered a compact building block eroded internally by new forms of semi-public space Thirteen 'schotsen' are distributed across the site in an open landscape that operates as a filter zone between the city centre and 19th century housing extensions S333 have developed Schots 1 and 2, which forms a strategic link in the city's ecological corridor linking the canal with an existing urban park, as the first phase of the project on the original Europan 3 site photo: João Morgado Project is not public! 23 photo: Wall House photo: Wall House Wall House A J Lutulistraat WT Groningen Originally designed in 1973 for Ed Bye, in Ridgefield, Connecticut USA, for a long time it only existed as a concept until Groningen decided to actually build the house Designed to place living in the context of time by means of a Wall which symbolizes the physical transition from past to future through the present, a transition between back and front, closed and open The Wall, one-and-a-half m thick, forms the basis of the house The entrance and living elements literally hang from it To reinforce this idea, a narrow gap is left between the Wall and the elements Hence the Wall is not directly manifest in the interior but can only be perceived visually It is a theoretical house, based on the idea of the physical confrontation between space and time, elaborated in separate elements It is a museological manifestation of an important architectural concept Although it wasn't designed for this particular site, it does enter into a dialogue with its 'everyday' surroundings photo: Wall House Project is public! 30 photo: Peter Tahl photo: Peter Tahl Groninger Museum Museumeiland ME Groningen The new Groninger Museum is not merely a casing for art, it is a work of art in itself, a principle that is occurring to an increasing extent in contemporary (museum) architecture It is an artwork in the centre of the city, traversed by public space where passers-by are directly confronted by all kinds of works of art Right from the outset, it was certain that it would be designed by several architects Mendini chose designers and architects for this purpose When the definitive selection was presented, an announcement was made, stating they had been chosen 'because we believe that, in the next decade, artistic research will be more up-to-date and qualifying than academic architecture, which is in a declining phase All of its shapes, layouts and choice of materials and colors refer to an idea related to this statement For instance the idea of going down the main spiral staircase, not upstairs as in traditional museums (to 'exalted' art) See the website for more explanation photo: Ralph Richter Project is public! 36 Pavilion for the Duisenberg-building Nettelbosje Groningen This extension to the Duisenberg building on the campus of Groningen University contains part of the library, offices and a lecture hall The project was constrained by a tight budget and equally tight time frame! The architects had just four months to produce a construction ready design The plain façades have been given depth by the application of a second skin of white, yellow and red aluminium coffers, profiles and variously perforated expanded metal sheeting This produces a moiré effect (interference pattern) with a different pattern of perforations for each of the buildings functions Although the moiré façade has a softening effect, the harder 'real' façade is always visible ans so becomes part of a layered visual game This balance between optical dynamism and a 'honest' technical appearance is continued in the interior Project is public! 37 Willem Alexander Sportcentre Zernikeplein AS Groningen Since 1 February 2008, the Institute for Sports Studies has a new building with all sports and lesson facilities at the Zernike Campus A special constellation of sports functions is grouped around a central space over several floors with various educational facilities A spectacular roof provides the central space with special light Throughout the building you can see and feel all kind of sports From the study-scenery you can, while quietly studying, watch the athletes in the top-sporthall From the canteen you can see the swimmers crawling Students can choose to work out in state of the art gymns, the swimming pool or the fitness rooms! The latest developments in sport have been applied Project is public! Floor area/size m² AGS Architekten & Planners Stichting Hanzehogeschool Groningen dirkverwoerd 37
38 Zernikeborg Nettelbosje AJ Groningen borg The Zernikeborg was the first new building on the Groningen University's rejuvenated campus The design originated from the area of tension between the university's massive high-rise blocks of the sixties and the abundant presence of public space The multi- functional educational building - inspired by a Groningen 'borg' (bailey) - is designed as an extraordinary and prominent site, situated on the entrance to this university complex The building's scale and the eaves of its roof, which gives the impression that you can nearly touch it, offer the building a human scale The reflection - generated by half of the building being positioned in the water - adds another dimension to the experience The building forms the hub for the ICT infrastructure in the north of the There was also a need for research areas for the application of computer technology, requiring a minimum of daylight, which more of less explains the appearance of the completed building Project is public! 39 Gasunie Headquarters Concourslaan Groningen One of the major starting-points in the design of the new building was, next to multi-efficiency and flexibility, to create a heart for the Gasunie Bringing all the people working for the Gasunie together does not only result in a 'calculated' efficiency but also gives them a feeling of belonging together A huge vertical 'indoor street' forms the binding element between the different floors As much attention was paid to the inside as the outside The organic character of the design is echoed throughout the interior of the building, even down to the specifically designed furniture One of the most striking features of the interior is the use of colour in the foyer and stairwell The architect chose earth tones for the structural elements like the columns and central pillar of the stairwell, to symbolize the building's attachment to the ground In 2007 this building was chosen by the readers of newspaper Trouw as the "Most beautiful building of Holland" Project is not public! 40 photo: Rudy Uytenhaak enbureau Linnaeusborg Centre for Life Sciences Grouwelerie Groningen appen 'Linnaeusborg' is the new building for the Centre for Life Sciences of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences of the University of Groningen The design forms a component of the WEST8 urban development plan, in which Zernike College will be transformed from a technocratic outpost of the university into an Arcadian campus in a leafy setting The building is situated on the eastern periphery of the Zernike complex, directly adjacent to the moat and the nature area beyond Housing for animals is situated on the north side, with greenhouses and test beds to the southin relation to the extensive project as a whole, Linnaeusborg is a functionally determined building that, while it is large in scale, does not form an impenetrable mass It opens up onto the campus, and is transparent and logical in its structure The volume can be interpreted as a body that rises from the ground and partly vanishes in the perspective and the sloping ground level Project is public!
