2 Page 2-LAWNDALE Bilingual News-Thursday, April 14, 2016 Every Child Counts By: Ashmar Mandou Covenant House, the nation s largest agency helping homeless youth, announced on Wednesday its plan to develop further services including an increase in shelter beds, street outreach, and additional opportunities for youth experiencing homeless in Chicago. We as a city cannot thrive until each of our children has an opportunity for success. Having a safe place to call home is fundamental so that our children can be focused on their studies and their future, and not worried about where they will sleep at night, said Mayor Emanuel. Covenant House will work alongside the Department of Family and Support Services (DFSS), service providers and community leaders to find an area for shelter space to best serve youth. After holding several meetings with Mayor Emanuel, Covenant House selected Chicago as its first expansion location in over 16 years, based on the City s proposed plan to reduce homelessness, collaboration by local partners, and support by stakeholders. This summer, Covenant House will open a facility that will expand citywide shelter capacity by adding 20 beds. At our programs in 27 cities across six countries, we see every night the difference a safe, warm bed means to our kids, said Covenant House President Kevin Ryan. A safe place to sleep literally means new life, transformation and hope. We are so grateful to the community leaders and especially our fellow service providers in Chicago who are on the front lines every night. Soon we will be standing side by side with them and together we ll rescue more kids from the freezing cold, from the violence, and from the vile pimps and traffickers who prey on vulnerable homeless youth. According to Ryan, one if the organization s principal goals in the coming weeks is to begin conducting street outreach to better understand the population and their specific needs. Ryan also stated the location of the new site will be announced soon and will be determined by street outreach conducted to disclose areas where services will make the most impact on homeless youth. The Mayor s personal dedication to serving homeless and his involvement in bringing Covenant House to Chicago will help us reach the City s most vulnerable youth, said DFSS Commissioner Lisa Morrison Butler. We welcome Covenant House to Chicago and look forward to a strong partnership with them as we work to end youth homelessness and improve outcomes for our children. In the course of the next months, the Emanuel Administration and DFSS will work with Covenant House to pinpoint a site to locate shelter space that will add shelter beds. Over 1,800 homeless youth nationwide sleep at Covenant House programs each night. The organization provides food, clothing, shelter, short and long-term housing, educational support, job training, and medical care. Established in 1972, Covenant House is the largest privately funded agency helping homeless children by providing 24/7 crisis care and ongoing support in 27 cities across six countries. 6 Page 6-LAWNDALE Bilingual News-Thursday, April 14, 2016 EDUCATION/ EDUCACION City Announces Funding to Restore Youth Employment at Shuttered Site Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced an investment to restore 65 youth employment opportunities at a small business that had been closed earlier this year due to funding withheld by the state s ongoing budget impasse. Bikes N Roses, which provides after-school and summer jobs for local high school students, will reopen its Belmont Cragin location with assistance by the city, allowing the business to employ 50 youth as part of the 2016 One Summer Chicago program. To reopen Bikes N Roses Belmont Cragin location, Mayor Emanuel has directed a $60,000 investment to restore 20 yearlong youth employment opportunities, and an additional $94,000 through One Summer Chicago program funding Continued on page 7

There will be a maximum of 250 applications distributed on a first come first served basis. Application packages may be picked up by applicant only, with identification, from the office of the Fire and Police Commission located at 5410 W 34th St Cicero, Illinois, on Saturday 30 April, 2016, between the hours of 12:00 PM and 7:00 PM. Estatal Silvana Tabares, D-Chicago, aprobó recientemente una legislación que actualizaría la descripción del estado sobre los trabajadores de otros países, utilizando el término inmigrante indocumentado. This legislation demonstrates that our state respects the values and culture that immigrants bring to Illinois. Tabares introduced House Bill 5945 to change how the law refers to undocumented immigrants, eliminating the term alien from the labor code and replacing it with undocumented immigrant. She developed the legislation based on an idea from students at Eric Solorio Academy High School, which is near her district. Based on its review of the application, the Illinois EPA has made a preliminary determination that the application meets the standards for issuance and has prepared a draft permit for public review. 11 LAWNDALE Bilingual News -Thursday, April 14, 2016-Page 11 In Drug-Theft Scandal, Two More Hospitals Urge Patients to Test for HIV and Hepatitis Two hospitals in Washington State warned nearly 1,500 patients they may have been exposed to HIV, hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV). It s the latest development in an ongoing drug diversion scandal, in which a traveling surgery technician has been charged with stealing and swapping syringes of painkiller drugs in at least four states, Access WDUN reports. The alert comes just weeks after state health officials in Colorado and Arizona warned more than 3,000 surgery patients to get tested for blood-borne illnesses, after health authorities at Glendale hospital in Phoenix uncovered evidence that surgery tech Robert Rocky Allen, had been taking fentanyl syringes from the surgery room and then using the powerful opioid narcotic. It was later discovered that Allen had been fired from at least four medical centers in four different states under similar allegations, setting a chain reaction of HIV and hepatitis warnings across the Southwest. Northwest Hospital and Medical Center in Seattle is now offering free hepatitis and HIV testing to 1,340 patients who received surgery at the facility in late 2012, during a 10-week window Allen worked at the facility before being fired for undisclosed reasons. Nearby Lakewood Surgery Center, where Allen also worked for a short time, said it had alerted 135 patients. Despite the warnings, both hospitals, as well as the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are currently characterizing the risk of infection as low. Allen, 28, who was arrested last month in Colorado, has plead not guilty against federal court charges of tampering with a consumer product and obtaining a controlled substance by deceit. The surgery tech s defense has said that Allen is a Navy veteran who suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder and started using opioid painkillers after witnessing war horrors in Afghanistan. Allen is currently out on a $25,000 bail and has been ordered to stay at a halfway house and get drug treatment as court proceedings continue. Other hospitals implicated in the exposure alert include: Scripps Green Hospital in San Diego, HonorHealth John C. Lincoln Hospital in Phoenix, and Swedish Medical Center in Denver. So far, no infections linked to Allen have been reported at any of the facilities.
