He has valued many different types of property including single residential, multi-residential, retail and office properties. He currently leads the team of assessors responsible for valuing all of the office properties throughout Calgary. He has a keen interest in odd or unique assessment issues and has developed new processes to deal with interesting issues along with his colleagues. Daniel is an Accredited Municipal Assessor of Alberta and an Accredited Appraiser Canadian Institute, Professional Appraiser and he also holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics degree from the University of Calgary. Desktop Assessment (2019CW06) This session will demonstrate the steps to build a Residential Request for Information (RFI) in CAMAlot, a review of the online interface to fill out the RFI, and details on managing the RFI s as they return. Detailed examples on how Strathcona County processes an RFI for both urban and rural properties utilizing various tools including; Pictometry, ARCGIS, MLS data, Google maps, and Posse (permit information) to complete a desktop assessment. Brennen Tipton, AMAA and Thomas Hussey 1 Learning 5

6 Becky Burke, AMAA has been working in the Assessment field for 7 years and has been at Strathcona County for the last 6 years. There she has worked assessing Residential properties in both urban and rural settings. In her new career in assessment, she has been a part of many changes and improvements to the technology and tools available for accurate assessment. Away from the office, she enjoys spending time with her husband, children and 3 grandchildren. Becky also enjoys vacations to new places as well as home life on the farm. Brennen Tipton, AMAA has been in the Assessment industry for 18 years. He received his accreditation in 2005 and has been an active member since. Work experience includes ten plus years with The City of Edmonton as part of their Non-Residential Team. Currently, Brennen is the Manager of the Residential Assessment Team with Strathcona County. Working in a Municipality that supports continued growth in technology, has allowed the residential team to implement new processes that have improved and streamlined data management Impact of the City Charters on Assessors in Alberta (2019CW07) The City Charters make a number of changes to assessment law in Calgary and Edmonton. However over time the impact of these Charters may also be felt elsewhere throughout the Province. This session will deal with a discussion of what the Charter means for assessors outside Edmonton and Calgary, what changes are found in the Charter, how the carious ways those changes could end up impacting assessors throughout Alberta. Cameron Ashmore, City of Edmonton 1 Learning Cameron Ashmore is a lawyer with the City of Edmonton who deals with tax and assessment matters including assessment hearings, tax recovery proceedings and tax sales. Arena and Strata Valuation (2019CW08) Roger's Place, the multi-use indoor arena complex in Edmonton's Ice District has been described as "spectacular, iconic and inspiring". Since its inception the complex has transformed the City's downtown core triggering a "hospitality explosion. This workshop will introduce participants to the challenges and intricacies City assessors encountered during the valuation of Roger's Place and take a brief look into future spin-off development. Marcia Barker, AMAA; Cristina Budnea; and, Sebastien Bergeron and City of Edmonton Industrial, Special Purpose, Exemptions, Cost & Land 1 Learning Marcia Barker holds the designations of CAE and AMAA and is currently the Team Lead for the Cost and Special Purpose inventory with the City of Edmonton. Marcia's extensive assessment background includes working in the City's residential, industrial and retail inventories as well as a year with the province preparing linear assessments. Cristina Budnea is an assessor with the City of Edmonton. She has been in this position for the past 2.5 years. Cristina was part of the Tax Exemption Team and in January 2019 joined the Cost and Special Purpose team. Cristina has a degree in World Economy and International Economic Relations from Republic of Moldova (where she's originally from) and is currently enrolled in the Diploma in Urban Land Economics (DULE) program with University of British Columbia. The Refinery Impact (North West Redwater Partnership) (2019CW09) The Sturgeon Refinery is the first refinery built in Canada in over 30 years and the only one designed from the outset with a carbon capture solution. Once fully operational, it will process 6

7 ~79,000 bpd of diluted bitumen from Alberta s oil sands into much higher value ultra-low sulphur diesel and other products. Construction of phase one finished in spring 2018, employing over 8,000 people per day at peak and injecting over $4.4 billion into the local area through spending on goods and services during the build. This type of mega project has a lasting positive impact on employment, economy, community, and Alberta s energy sector. Vanessa Goodman, GM, External Relations (NWRP) 1 Learning Vanessa Goodman has a Degree in Agriculture and a Masters in Business Administration, including a study tour to China. Vanessa had various roles with the Government of Alberta doing stakeholder relations and international trade policy before she launched her own consultancy. This allowed her to combine working as a communications consultant from home while raising three boys with her husband. Most recently, she joined North West Redwater Partnership during the final stages of construction on the Sturgeon Refinery to continue building the company s reputation and relationships as their Manager of External Relations. Aurora Cannabis (2019CW10) This presentation will consist of a brief corporate/industry overview, followed by some facility details and visuals with time for a robust q & a period. Approximately minutes for the presentation and minutes for the Q & A. David Howe, Aurora Cannabis 1 Learning David Howe is the Manager of Government and Municipal Affairs with Aurora Cannabis, one of the world s largest and fastest growing cannabis companies. David holds a BA (Political Science and Economics) degree from the University of Alberta, and is a certified Harm Reduction specialist. COPTER (2019CW11) NOTE: This session is only offered 2 times at 9:00 and 10:15 This session will review the current legislation and provide delegates with a sufficient understanding in information to develop a checklist with reference to the relevant section of the MGA and Regulations to help follow through the exemption process and determine what is exempt or not.
