2 CSR is a modern term. The definition of CSR was framed by the World Business Council for Social Development around CSR has become a buzzword amongst businesses today, but the concept of CSR has been known and practised in India since ancient times, only in a much larger, wider, higher and deeper context known as DHARMA 2

3 DHARMA The Bhagvad Gita begins with the word DHARMA or righteousness. In Vedanta, business is viewed as an integral part of society essentially to create wealth for its members through right means of action. 3

5 As India gained independence, there were some business leaders who believed in the larger purpose of business as a means to uplift and improve the lives of people. Long before CSR was thought of, our Founder, Shri Kasturbhai Lalbhai, was voluntarily spending vast sums of money and his time in the fields of education, infrastructure, relief and religion. 5

6 Shri Kasturbhai Lalbhai was one of the legendary Indians of his time. He followed the ideology of Swami Vivekananda service to mankind is service to God and considered business enterprises as means to serve the society. Shri Lalbhai, an institution builder par excellence, made seminal contributions by devoting his life to selfless service for the development of India. 6
