HALSTED ST FAX: CHICAGO, IL THE MAN WHO ADVERTISES HIS BUSINESS...HAS ONE GOOD CIRCULATION MEANS MORE READERS, MEANS BETTER RESULTS! CIRCULATION 25,300 VIEW CURRENT ISSUE AT A NON-PARTISAN INDEPENDENT NEWSPAPER SERVING BRIDGEPORT, BACK OF THE YARDS, CANARYVILLE, ARMOUR SQUARE, CHINATOWN AND MCKINLEY PARK South Loop Chamber of Commerce Honors Franco s Ristorante and the Ruffolo Family The Chamber experienced one of their largest turnouts on Tuesday night, November 14, at Guaranteed Rate Field in the Bards Room honoring Franco's Ristorante and The Ruffolo Family. Frank opened Franco's in 1989 on 31st and Princeton with quite an extensive knowledge of the hospitality business starting at the age of 14, starting to work for family and selling hotdogs from a cart near White Sox Park. Frank then opened Franconnello's in 1994 in the Beverly neighborhood, and Jeanine opened Jam N Honey in Lincoln Park in 2011, both successful restaurants like Franco's. They both continue to work at their restaurants and enjoy this, along with their son s help. At an early age, Frank A. was deeply interested in the restaurant business and loved to prepare special Italian meals. At 15 years old, he began to man Franco's Ristorante booth at the Taste of Chicago, and with the help of his brother Mario, Lollapalooza, and the NFL Draft. Frank soon expanded and opened at the Fountain in Grant Park at Buckingham Fountain, serving several flavors of gelato and Italian ice, small plates, coffee, drinks and other treats. Once graduating college, his parents handed him his own key to Franco's, and Frank did some remodeling, reconstructed the entire bar and changed up the menu a bit. Though the look of Franco's Ristorante might be different, it is still the family neighborhood taste of Italy! Frank makes it a point to greet every customer in the dining room, and is thrilled to be meeting so many new comers to his restaurant from near and far. The South Loop Chamber of Commerce appreciates the continued support of the Ruffolo family and their outstanding contributions to our community. Thank you everyone who joined us to show your support for our honorees. It was a great night for all! George s Gyros Joins the Global #GivingTuesday Movement Pledges to 15% of revenue to Armour School Friends of Armour and George s Gyros are excited to announce a partnership for #GivingTuesday, a global giving movement built to transform how people think about, talk about, and participate in the giving season. The event inspires people to take collective action to improve their communities, give back in better, smarter ways to the charities and causes they believe in. This year, on November 28th, Friends of Armour and George s Gyros will partner together in this great cause. Friends of Armour was created this year to support the programming and resources at Armour Elementary School (950 W. 33rd Place). Friends of Armour is a non profit parent driven fundraising group committed to building up the dreams and potential of the Armour School community by raising up funds and resources for the 281 students and families Armour serves. Armour School has continuously served the Bridgeport community since 1901 and is currently experiencing new and exciting initiatives, including an afterschool enrichment program, STEM/robotics programming, a new community art program, 5th 8th grade sports teams, an early childhood outreach program, and more. Under the leadership of Principal Ms. Katherine Chuu, the school is already experiencing changes leading towards a promising future for a school focusing on enrichment opportunities for the students. I m truly inspired by the level of enthusiasm all around the school, and look forward to Friends of Armour bringing parents and students together under a new sense community involvement, said Mercedes Gutierrez, Armour parent and President of Friends of Armour. As we embark on our first year of #GivingTuesday, we are encouraged by the great response from community partners that are willing to start on this new journey with us. Those who are interested in joining Friends of Armour s #GivingTuesday initiative can visit Armour School s Facebook page. For they cannot be here with us, And to thank the lord For the food we have before us We re lucky to afford. We are having Turkey for dinner, Best food for the day. And grandma s mashed potatoes Would be on display. I heard the best meal of the day In all kinds of weather Is when every one can sit down And the family is together. We hope your family can join you On such a special day, And enjoy each other s company In a good family way. Now we can not be here forever As everybody knows. There are many things happening To keep on our toes. So try to make this Thanksgiving The best one in town. For you will not be disapointed if The family is around. John P. Commissioner Daley and Commissioner Garcia Honor 9th District Police Officers Cook County Commissioners John P. Daley and Jesus Chuy Garcia honored 9th District Police Officers Leo Augle, Colin Ryan, Victoria Mendoza and David Perez for their commendable response to two separate dangerous incidents in the 4300 block of South Ashland. The Commissioners also honored local business owner Ricardo Jimenez for his bravery in assisting Officer Mendoza. Officers Perez and Mendoza responded to a call of a robbery in progress and encountered gunfire which wounded Officer Mendoza. Mr. Ricardo Jimenez saw Officer Mendoza bleeding from her knee and attempted to tie a tourniquet around her wound to slow the bleeding and assist her until medical units had arrived. Thanks to the superb training, quick reflexes and courage of the two Chicago Police Officers, the armed offenders were apprehended and later charged accordingly. In a separate incident at the same location, two vehicles surrounded Officer Augle and Office Ryan s police vehicle and opened fire with high a powered assault rifle which struck the vehicle and wounded both officers. While being wounded, both Officer Augle and Officer Ryan returned fire and were later able to provide descriptions of the offenders and the vehicles involved. At a meeting of the County Board of Com missioners on Tuesday, November 14, 2017 Commissioners Daley and Garcia praised the officers for their bravery and courage under duress and thanked the Chicago Police for their continued efforts to end gang violence in the area and across the city. Santa Lucia School Hears a Who at Dr. Seussical the Musical Santa Lucia School took a trip to Morton West High School to see the production of Dr. Seussical the Musical. Children in all grades got to enjoy this foottapping, colorful, rhyme filled show which focused around some very recognizable and well known Dr. Seuss characters. The high school students of Morton West did a phenomenal job of keeping us all entertained. Afterwards, Santa Lucia school children got to hang around to participate in a little Q & A time, while the little ones met some of the characters, including The Cat in the Hat, Horton the Elephant, Jojo, and Things 1 & Thing 2. A huge thanks to Mrs. Annette Hoffmann and her daughter Gabby Hoffmann (a senior at Morton West and the Assistant Director of the show) for providing us with a great day at the show.
