SPRED Program Seeks Volunteers We are beginning another year of the program called SPRED, special religious deveiopment, at the Archdiocesan SPRED Center on 30th and Lowe Avenue above the chapel. It is a program of growing in faith within a small community of faith for children, adolescents, young adults, or adults who live with developmental or intellectual disabilities or learning problems. It is a place of growing in friendship for these people especially in coming to know the Lord. We are looking for families who have a person who could benefit from the SPRED program of any age or ability. We are seeking adult volunteers who want to become involved and be a friend to a person with special needs within a small faith group. If you are interested in leaming more about SPRED, visit our website at or call Elizabeth at , ext. 0. Call and ask questions so you can learn more about this program. Men and women who want to consider the SPRED program need no prior experience with people with special needs. We are looking for people who have a warm and loving personality, who are open to forming friendships with others, and who want to grow in their own faith in a God who loves. We have a SPRED parish chairperson who represents their pastor from St. Gabriel parish who works with us at the SPRED Center. She is an outreach to these families and to her parishioners who might want to become involved. We hope other area parishes will appoint a SPRED parish chairperson. The SPRED program is different than the religious education program in a parish. We form a small faith community of eight adult volunteers who welcome six friends of a particular age group. Come and help us welcome these people from all the area parishes. ONIAC Women s Alliance WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 9th, 08 U.S. News Names Mercy a High Performing Hospital for Heart Failure and COPD U.S. News & World Report again has named Mercy Hospital & Medical Center a high performing hospital in the treatment of two of the nation's most serious health conditions heart failure and COPD. This is the fourth consecutive year Mercy has been rated high performing in heart failure and the third year in a row it has been rated high performing in COPD, also known as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Heart failure occurs when the heart muscle is weakened and cannot pump enough blood to adequately meet the body's needs for blood and oxygen. About 5.7 million adults in the United States have heart failure, and the condition is a contributing cause in one in nine deaths. COPD includes emphysema, chronic bronchitis and other diseases that cause breathing problems. Nearly 6 million Americans have been diagnosed with COPD. In the annual Best Hospital rankings, U.S. News evaluated hospitals on publicly reported measures such as patient volume, preventing blood clots and patient survival. The Mercy Heart & Vascular Center is staffed by a collaborative, multidisciplinary group of providers joining forces for quality outcomes. The team includes specialists from neurologists and nephrologists to gastroenterologists all of whom work with the interventional cardiovascular specialists, cardiovascular surgeons, nurses, nurse practitioners and technicians to develop personalized, patient-focused therapies. Commissioner Daley Meets with Senior Group from Chesterton, IN The South Loop Chamber of Commerce were glad to help Duneland Senior Group from Chesterton, Indiana, arrange an outing to Bridgeport. Nancy Lakin, program Director, was working with the Chamber for months setting up the perfect day trip for her group. After arriving, they were greeted by Commissioner John Daley. They wanted to learn all about growing up with a Mayor for a father, and the stockyard area and history, Bubbly Creek, the Chicago River, and if he remembered the rioting. They loved hearing all the history of our neighborhood and were very curious about what was next. Commissioner Daley graciously answered all their questions and they went on to their next adventure promising to make another date with the Commissioner. The group enjoyed touring the Chicago Maritime Museum, located in Bridgeport Art Center. Here they heard stories about Chicago waterways, and the past, present and future of Bubbly Creek. They also learned about the history of the building, and toured the building, showrooms, and workshop spaces. Where did they choose for lunch? Dave's Polo Café! Dave set up The Eagle Room beautiful as always, talked about the history of his building, the growth of Morgan Street, and even played his organ for them. Everyone learned something new that day! After lunch they made their final stop at the birthplace of Chicago, Portage Park at the Cook County Forest Preserve. We have so much history in our neighborhood, and places of interest to visit, just take advantage of it!
