Jain addressing the audience during the Inaugural Ceremony Text: Vivek Gopinathan We re in this strange moment in history, where the actions of our predecessors are visibly altering and destroying the state of things for our successors. It is upon our shoulders to act responsibly for we owe the future generations to give a healthy and secure future. The two-day conference on Green Interiors,organised by the Institute of Indian Interior Designers (IIID); Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) and the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) on the 29th and 30th of May, 204 at the ITC Grand Central in Parel, Mumbai, was a step in this direction bringing together professionals from diverse fields and their expertise in exploring the notions and possibilities of green interiors. The conference was kick-started with an inspiring talk by Mr. Gurmit Singh Arora, Vice Chair, IGBC Mumbai Chapter followed by Ar. Nitin Solapurkar, IIID National President. Dr. Prem C Jain, IGBC Chairman shared that green building movement has today crossed two billion sq.ft. a testimony to the fact that there is a growing anxiety and awareness about sustainable future. The conference commenced with a session on Sustainably Built Environment: Learning from the Past. Ar. Yatin Pandya of Footprints E.A.R.T.H. presented his work, which espoused the principle of Inspired by Yesterday, Aspired for Tomorrow emphasizing on the importance of contextual design and

2 how the pluralistic nature of Indian tradition makes it much easier for us to adopt green lifestyles. Next Ar. Habeeb Khan of Priyadarshini Institute of Architecture and Design Studies explained the need to use locally sourced natural materials in a contemporary framework to establish a symbiotic relationship with nature. Health and Safety in Built Indoors was the theme of the second session. Mr. Avinash Kumar of SGS India Private Limited spoke how nearly 500,000 deaths in India annually stem from indoor air pollution. Ms. Julie Kagti from Sutra Fashions private limited followed up with the importance of textiles on indoor. Mr. N E Subramanian from Saint-Gobain Gyproc India Limited, made a case for Gypsum board dry walls and its positive impact on Indoor Air Quality (IAQ). The day s penultimate session was an open discussion on Controlled Vs Open Indoors moderated by Mr. V Suresh of Hirco Development Pvt. Ltd, Mumbai with Ar. Yatin Pandya, Ar. Sathya Prakash Varanashi of Sathya Consultants; Prof. Roshni Udyavar Yehuda from Rachana Sansad, and Mr. Surendra Shah of Panasia Engineers Private Limited, which concluded with the consensus amongst the panelists about the need for a context based healthy mix of both systems. The last session of the day on Indoor Green Materials began with Ar. Praveen Kumar Soma from IGBC Hyderabad speaking about the fast depleting resources and how to counter this through various interesting examples. Next Mr. George Joel of GreenEarth Culture Private Limited mesmerised the attendees with his innovations in bamboo construction, and how small scale bamboo products can contribute to greener interior design and contribute to rural economy. Mr. Yatnesh Pandey from Kansai Nerolac Private Limited spoke about the necessity of restricting VOC producing paints followed by Mr. Neeraj Mutha of Mutha Industries Pvt. Ltd., who spoke about bamboo as timber of the 2st Century, by using Bamboowood flooring and decking. The final day of the conference began with Ar. 3 58 INSITE INITIATIVES Green Interiors Conference 3. Audience completely engrossed during the presentation explained about the impact of design on human behaviour personally and collectively. Statistical data on the impact of various interior products was presented Prof. Roshni Udyavar Yehuda with Ms. Ashwini Deodeshmukh from Godrej Interio, making a case for adopting greener products for a healthier lifestyle. At the next session Ar. Arun Nalapat of ArunNalapat Architects, presented ways to improve the indoor quality in healthcare environment aiding inhealing and maintain hygienic conditions with a perception of healthy space. Ar. Sathya Prakash Varanashi followed up with a talk on Building with Nature where he discussed how sustainably built environments lead to better health and comfortthrough interesting examples. The session was concluded with presentation about CAMUS-SBT which uses natural processes to treat sewage and waste water while also contributing to the green cover by Dr. Chandrashekhar Shankar of Vision Earthcare. Session VI began with remarks by Mr. Conrad Gonsalves, past president of IIID on Indoor Air Quality and the impact of light, sound and air. Prof Minal Sutaria of Green Angle highlighted on the lack of diversity in modern building styles and 3 techniques which are out of tune with traditional styles which responded to the geographically varying quality of natural light. Raj Menon from Interface Flor discussed solutions to restore IAQ and indoor dust control. Mr. Dipankar Shome of Knauf AMF India Limited then presented on certification system for IAQ and ceiling products that maintain air quality. In Session VII, Mr. Surendra Shah presented on Zero Impact Thermal Comfort System which married traditional cooling system with modern technology and pure ingenuity. Mr. VarunPotbhare of AECOM Building Engineering, followed by Ar. Ashish Bahalfrom Philips India Ltd. spoke about how energy efficiency in office interiors can be implemented by optimisation in lighting design. The session was concluded by Ms. Neeta Sharma of IAPMO India, who raised the need for certification and standards for water fixtures to conserve limited water resources. National and International Case Studies were the theme of the final session at the conference. Ar. Mona Doctor Pingel of Studio Naqshbandi, presented her work enshrining the principles ofauroville where Spirituality is Supreme Simplicity. Ar. Nari Gandhi s work was showcased next by Ar. Rahul Gore of Opolis Architects. The final speaker at the conference, Ar. Dean D cruz of MOZAIC,presented how the easiest, simplest, and most efficient green solutions come from humble rural interventions andemphasised how it is villages that need to develop greener attitudes to make substantial impact for a greener tomorrow. Mr. Shrinivas, Deputy Executive Director of CII-Godrej GBC, closed the event with a humble reassurance that despite the grim indicators, there is hope for a greener feature. He shared with the audience that the 2 billion sft footprint, though looks bigger, it constitutes merely three percent of total construction in the country!

4 INDORE March 204 A Great Co-Speaker Event It is very heartening to find that an elaborate event with four speakers spontaneously, continued to strike a chord with a hall full of participative audience at Indore on st March 204. The afternoon began with the presentations of shortlisted entries of a student design competition entitled Design 360, wherein the student groups presented a variety of creative thoughts amongst the judges on the project Spa Design. The first speaker, Ar. Ashish Sachade emphasised on utility. His presentation highlighted that apart from principles of design, value for money and time are fundamentals to achievement. He shared the admirable thought of India First which meant to prioritise Indian materials, craftsmen and techniques. The next speaker, Ar. Nitin Patel, director of Unison Design, Pune focused on detailing the design elements and enhancing the designs with applying skills on natural materials available locally around the site. After a tea break, the next speaker, Ar. Sunil Kulkarni presentation began. His talk & work had the messages such as, Design is the Core, Dematerialisation, Minimalism, Personalise and Design Timeless. Last but not the least was Ar. Saquib Japanwala, the head at Maks Interiors, Kuwait. His set up at Kuwait was to fill the vacuum and address the need of the state. He presented his most applauded works such as Kuwait Tower, Sharq Restaurant, Shabestan-Iranian restaurant, Al-Ahsa an Indian restaurant and M.F. Hussain Museum at Qatar. The event was well sponsored by Alstone Evoque. The student winners of the design competition were graced with cash prizes and honoured by the chief speakers. Interior Designer Bhumika Chainani held the audience through the event as an anchor. The sessions were well co-ordinated by the team members, Mr. Mahendra Pratap Singh Rathore and Ms. Jyoti Pahlani. Ashok Korgaonkar IIID Indore gathered for another knowledgeable session on April 2, 204, this time with Ar. Ashok Korgaonkar. Ar. Korgaonkar is an Indian Architect making his mark internationally since last 3 decades. He takes pride in being an Indian and his Dubai based firm Arch Group Consultants employs mostly Indian architects, designers, structural engineers & project managers. Before the professional fraternity saw INSITE JULY

Ashok Korgaonkar interacting with students 2 3 his presentation, the students of various colleges got to see his enormous projects during the students session which lasted for around two hours. Ar. Korgoankar showed his award wining project which has entered Guinness World Record for being the tallest twin hotel building, The Hotel JW Marriot, Marquis. He had prepared a presentation specially for the students so that they could understand his design approach and its implementation easily. Later in the evening, during presentation for members of IIID Indore centre & professionals, Ar. Ashok Korgoankar discussed a variety of projects. The projects included various Hotels in Dubai namely JW Marriot Marquis, Al Aqqa Beach Resort in Fujairah, Hotel in Oman, Grosvenor House in Mumbai, Bay side Residences in Dubai, Tropicana Resort in Alibaug, Lonavla Resort in India, DSO Seven Towers in Dubai, Sky top Golf Villas in Mysore & Premier INN Dubai. He also explained his design and planning for Emirates Head Quarters in Dubai which is a multi-functional building at different levels. At one level, it has the offices and at another level, arrival and movement of crew staff for Emirates Airlines. Other projects which he discussed were Emirates Aviation College, DPS School amongst Institutional projects and many multidwelling residential work in most of the Arab Countries. He is active in India too with residential projects in and around Mumbai. He also showed models for his upcoming Five Premier Inn hotels across India. Ar. Korgaonkar s firm specializes in planning, designing, supervision and execution of the entire project including project management. The presentation concluded with few questions from the audiences regarding his work experiences abroad. Later, the Chapter Chairman, Ar. Arjun Hablani addressed the gathering with a promise for more such sessions including some from of the architects belonging to the city. The programme ended with a Vote of Thanks presented by Ar. Paresh Kapade. INDORE 24 APRIL 204 A Fortunate Show. Mr. Manish Kumat 2. IIID Indore centre members pose for the camera On April 24, IIID Indore witnessed View Master Series 6, featuring Sir Norman Foster followed by a presentation by an Indore based Interior Designer, Mr. Manish Kumat. Sir Norman Foster s work, style and life implanted seeds of continuous hard work and strong belief in self creative instinct towards building wonders. The audience got intimately attached watching the movie as if it was a virtual meeting with Foster,where he was sharing his life experiences so friendly and truly, that the learning went deep into everyone s heart. When his great works viz. Queen Elizabeth II great court British Museum-London, New British Library of Political & Economic Science-London, The Beijing Airport China flashed, the audience was actually seen so engrossed that even a moment of blinking of eyes was as if loss of a wonderful sight. Post this event, the audience over dinner had an interactive discussion on the seriousness and love portrayed by Sir Foster towards the profession, bringing uncountable big works to his growth and name. Such a Master is a fortunate show for all at IIID and makes it an applaudable event. Mr. Manish Kumat presented four different projects namely The Art of Living School Building at Indore, A classical Villa, Hotel Sapphire Star and The Courtyard House. All of these projects had a completely different requirement and therefore, different approach to present and watch the same.

6 2 It was an initiative by a local speaker which was praised to be followed in the forthcoming events. The Chairman, Ar. Arjun Hablani concluded the evening with his address to the audience informing about the next moves and Vote of Thanks. This event drew all the professionals of the city, forming a complete audience. INDORE 5 May 204 A Dual Evening On May 5, 204, a dual evening was held at Fortune Landmark Indore, presenting View Master Series 7 on the great architect Antonio Gaudi and a local speaker on The Master Architect Sanjay Shrivastav. Watching the film, the entire audience journeyed an astonishing world created by Sir Antonio Gaudi with wonderful imagery, forms in columns, roofs, vaults, stalactites, extremely fine exploration of raw materials & craftsmanship through an immeasurable devotion. The audience was speechless during & even after the film. Each element of every project was a masterpiece. The whole experience of the movie was amazing. In the latter half of the programme, the audience was self tied up with their seats to hear Ar. Sanjay Shrivastav. With a soft gesture, he unwound the skillful technical details of his projects overview in Coonoor in South India where the topography does not have any flat land more than 0.5 kms patch. For more than half of the year, the sites face extreme climatic conditions. It is an accomplishment when he revealed the challenges of the projects via making hydel channels which would serve at the critical phases of construction. One of his projects in Uttarakhand stood undisturbed even during the disastrous calamity. He also presented two such strategically planned malls of Indore where one can see the entire mall from any point of the common area. The other projects included commercial buildings namely Orbit Mall, Apollo Square Indore, Shoppers stop and a few residential townships. The concepts and detailing were simply well framed in his presentation. He is known for his simplicity and now the professional gathering appreciated him for his complex confident details as well. At the end of both the shows, the audience gave a standing ovation. The program was anchored by Interior Designer Bhumika Chainani. The valedictory address was given by the Chairman, Mr. Arjun Hablani. The spirit of listening to more of local architects came up when there happened an informal announcement by one of the members about bringing the next speaker from the present audience. 2. Ar.
