10 SECTION I. Part B. Nomination Statement: Digest of Achievements Nominee: Michael B. Wilson, AIA Describe how the nominee's work may be considered notable and how it has advanced the profession of architecture. Note: Use additional space as necessary. (250 word limit) Mike is not only an accomplished Architect, but also embodies the importance of utilizing our skills and talents for the betterment of our entire profession. Mike s leadership roles at AIA Louisiana have been as President, President Elect, Vice President, Secretary/Treasurer, and Baton Rouge Delegate. Mike also served as the Chair of the Facility Planning and Control Liaison Committee and the State Fee Committee. Mike s AIA Baton Rouge Chapter involvement includes President, Vice President, and membership chair. Mike didn t simply hold these esteemed positions as some sort of resume builder, he lived up to the trust that AIA Louisiana Architects bestowed upon on him by accomplishing a great deal! Two of Mike s greatest achievements are his post-katrina efforts with the USPS and his efforts related to revisions to the Louisiana State A/E fee curve. Due to numerous health and safety issues inherent in post-storm projects, Mike personally conducted all field work in darkened buildings, filled with muck and mold, in order to ensure that his employees were not unnecessarily placed in harm s way. Despite a long career spanning many projects, the deplorable field conditions and unique circumstances proved to be his most challenging undertaking, yet provided his greatest sense of accomplishment as well. Mike worked tirelessly to successfully negotiate and create the current Louisiana architectural fee formula that has now been adopted by, not only local municipalities and entities throughout Louisiana, but by other states as well. The positive impact upon the practice of architecture in Louisiana has been immeasurable.

11 SECTION II. A. Biographical Data Although not one to speak highly of himself, numerous discussions with Mike during the past eighteen (18) years that I have known him have led me to know the following about him and his accomplishments. According to Mike, his single most important accomplishment was when he passed his architectural license exam. Without that, none of his subsequent architectural accomplishments would have been possible. Significant Accomplishments Related to Facility Design While at Barbay Associates in the late 70's, Mike served as Project Manager for LSU s Agronomy Building, an award-winning 63,000 SF, and state-of-the-art laboratory facility. It was during this project that Mike met and collaborated with Bobbie Crump, his eventual business partner. The highly technical nature of laboratory design struck a chord with Mike and would eventually lead his business in that direction. With more than fifty (50) laboratory projects completed, Crump Wilson Architects has demonstrated a level of competency and customer service rarely matched within the profession. Whether designing quality control labs, environmental labs, biomedical facilities, radiology laboratories, high physics facilities, applications labs, life sciences, or research and development labs, Mike has established his group as one of the preeminent laboratory design firms in the region. With both current and former clients continuing to seek his advice and expertise, Mike continues to hone his skills by staying abreast of the latest in laboratory design, laboratory equipment, and laboratory technologies. Current Crump Wilson-designed facilities can be found across the county, to include Oregon, Arizona, Missouri, Texas, Illinois, and Louisiana. While at Barbay, Mike was also introduced to the industrial sector. Once again, the highly-technical nature of industrial projects proved intriguing and seemed to coincide well with his love of laboratory design. Through tenacious effort and study, Mike quickly established himself as an expert within the industrial world. To this day, Crump Wilson Architects (CWA) is known for their design expertise with packaging and shipping facilities, warehouses, control centers, substations, and motor control centers at industrial facilities from East Texas to Georgia. This industrial exposure forced Mike to become an expert with hazardous occupancy facilities. His reputation is such that CWA has been retained to conduct hazardous code analysis for both existing, as well as proposed, production facilities throughout several states. The expertise gained in designing industrial facilities, such that they are able to maintain operations despite hazardous environmental conditions, fit perfectly with the recent surge in demand for emergency command/control facilities for governmental agencies. Over time, Mike and his firm have become renowned for their design and implementation of anti-terrorist features and fully-redundant HVAC, security, and electrical systems. Significant Accomplishments Related to Crump Wilson Architects In 1985, Mike joined as a Partner with the three-person firm known as Bobbie B. Crump, Jr., Architect with the goal of growing the firm. At the time of Bobbie Crump s passing in 2004 the company had nearly tripled in size. Today the firm is known as Crump Wilson Architects; a financially strong, fourteen-person firm who s client list includes not only international entities, but also local, state, and federal governments. Under Mike s leadership, and in conjunction with Partners Bobby Boudreaux and Shawn Fisher, the firm enjoys a special culture wherein people of varied talents can realize their full potential, while

12 maintaining the firm s niche. In order to preserve this culture, slow, determined growth has always trumped rapid, haphazard growth. Significant Accomplishments Related to our Architectural Profession AEPlans Dick Thevenot, then Director of AIA Louisiana, thought that we architects were not taking full advantage of technology. He saw many other entities were generating revenue off of the architects and thought, Wouldn t it be nice if we could make money off of ourselves and use this income stream to benefit our profession? Thus the seeds of AEPlans were planted in Over the next four years, Mike worked tirelessly with Dick, MaxView, and a handful of other architects to hammer out agreements, develop the software, and devise a distribution network. Today, the Washington-based company continues to enjoy success and AIA Louisiana continues to receive royalty payments based upon usage by Louisiana architects. Louisiana State Fee Curve As mentioned in the Nomination Statement, Mike served on the AIA LA/FP&C Liaison Committee for a number of years. It was well known that the state fee curve for architects was outdated. The outdated fee curve didn t accurately capture the efforts required of practitioners nor the costs of doing business. Mike volunteered to serve on the State Fee Committee that was established in Along with a handful of other architects and engineers, Mike worked tirelessly for the next seven (7) years and eventually chaired the group that successfully negotiated and created the current fee formula. This formula has now been adopted by not only local municipalities and entities throughout Louisiana but has also been used to update and improve fee formulas used by other states. The positive impact upon the practice of architecture in Louisiana has been immeasurable. Offices Held Mike first became truly aware of AIA when he joined Bobbie Crump in Bobbie was very active in the organization and even required all architectural employees to attend every chapter meeting. This devotion to the organization had a big influence on Mike. Eventually, he was asked to serve as Membership Chair for AIA Baton Rouge in It was during this tenure that the importance of AIA to the profession became apparent. Similar to his other interests, Mike fully committed to the organization and his level of involvement increased over the years, leading to his election as President of AIA Baton Rouge in Summary Some architects are artists. Some architects are teachers and instructors. Some architects are builders. Some architects are politicians. Over the course of his storied career, Mike has had the opportunity to incorporate each of these qualities into his efforts. Whether employing the latest technology to produce awe-inspiring designs, mentoring young interns, collaborating with engineers and scientists, or meeting with top-level governmental officials, Mike has always filled the role to the best of his ability. When asked to recap his architectural career in one sentence, Mike stated, I am a blessed architect that works hard for his profession, his team members at the firm, and his clients. Such a simple summation of an extremely technical career reflects well the underlying character that drives him, his business, and his devotion to the client.

37 CRU M P W I L S O N A R C H I T E C T S Special Advertising Feature Where teamwork and creativity meet functionality F or Mike Wilson, managing partner of Crump Wilson Architects, the sharing of ideas that emanates when his staff gathers is fundamental to innovative, quality design that meets client needs. Wilson, along with partners Bobby Boudreaux and Dianna Peden Odom, have garnered large regional projects that have positioned the 30-year-old firm as an expert in areas like industrial and laboratory design. According to the three partners, the firm s solid base of repeat clients, like the U.S. Postal Service, is due to focused collaboration with clients to combine modern design elements with functionality. We work as a team with the business owner so that the end project is a pure reflection of their needs and wishes. We have long-term relationships with our clients, explains Wilson. Moreover, by honing in on niches like research and classroom laboratory design, the firm is able to anticipate trends and solve problems for clients in advance. We offer clients in-house expertise in building laboratories where most other firms have to hire out-of-state consultants, adds Wilson. Odom is leading the renovation of Nicholls State University s original science building, Beauregard Hall, into a high-tech classroom lab. She convinced the university to preserve the nearly 50-year-old building s good bones and save elements like a ceramic tile wall rather than completely gutting the building. The intent was to enhance the building s historical elements while integrating modern laboratory qualities, says Odom. She s been able to assimilate administration and faculty input while helping to retrofit the new lab for current teaching modules while ensuring technology is in place. Recently, the opportunity to create an iconic design for the Port of Greater Baton Rouge s new emergency command center yielded a prime example of the firm s ability to merge creativity with function. Located on the west bank of the Mississippi River, the command center will provide emergency response for maritime incidents and host computer monitoring, sleeping quarters and a media room. On the third floor, a situation room offers unobstructed views of the Mississippi River. Inspired by the maritime industry, Boudreaux integrated sleek metal panels, a catwalk, a captain s bridge and solar shading devices inspired by ship windows. The building, which is projected to be complete in 2009, will greet travelers crossing the Mississippi River bridge at Baton Rouge. Wilson says the firm has been rooted in integrity since its beginnings, when the late Bobbie B. Crump Jr. founded the firm. Early projects were local churches, financial institutions and office facilities. Bobbie was very design oriented, reflects Wilson, who first brought laboratory, federal and industrial projects to the partnership in We worked well together because I was the technical nuts and bolts guy. Company ... bobbyb@crumpwilsonarchitects.com The Team Port of Greater Baton Rouge, Emergency Command and Control Center Wilson says he enjoys watching the same dynamic reflected today as Boudreaux s panache for design complements Odom s technical skills. But, teamwork and diversity extend beyond the three partners. The firm is strategically growing its staff, bringing in new employees with high-tech skills to help with programs that produce 3-D imaging technology. All hands on deck is Boudreaux s frequent call-out to co-workers as he mulls over projects. The partners agree that s when the ideas and energy germinate. This approach is currently under way as the firm begins to design its new headquarters on the corner of St. Ferdinand Street and Myrtle Avenue. Boudreaux says the design will embrace the fabric of the existing neighborhood while capturing sustainable, showcase design elements. While entering into new niche areas, like the Bunge-Ergon Ethanol Plant Control Laboratory and modernistic ethanol fueling stations in Mississippi, Crump Wilson is steadily growing. However, Wilson says the firm will always offer the conscientious design and quality service that has fostered its client partnerships since s Annual Report, April 2008
