An installation by Ken VonRoenn The Glassworks The founders of Glassworks, Ken vonroenn, owner of Architectural Glass Art; Bill Weyland, designer of the famed Louisville Slugger Museum; and commercial real-estate appraiser Ed Allgeier, joined efforts to create a community and hub for glass artists throughout the world. The Glassworks is dedicated to the creation, exhibition and sale of art glass, but the visit the tour is the central player, said vonroenn. That makes it a unique factory in the country. Lawrence, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 2006 is the 50 th Anniversary of Mr. Lawrence s apprenticeship. He will take us on the life journey that developed his personal concept of style, including some of the side paths along the way. After completing his apprenticeship at the R. H. Buenz Studio, Lawrence continued his studies at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. He has worked for numerous major studios, including 16 years at the Willet Studio in Philadelphia. Among his noted design commissions are windows for the Washington D.C. Mormon Temple; Gortex Manufacturing Co.; five windows for the Washington National Cathedral; and Saint Mary s at the Cathedral in Andorra, PA, which he completed with the help of his eldest daughter. Lawrence was the second artist to receive the SGAA Lifetime Achievement Award. He would like to thank everyone who contributed to his career, especially R.H. Buenz, whose kindness and patience made it all possible. Anatomy of Restoration Projects Although there are conservation and regulatory differences between countries, this presentation will focus on techniques and similarities. The steps of restoration will be detailed, including project evaluation, specifics on stained glass painting techniques and safety considerations. Lisa Di Campli; Di Campli Glass Studio, The Hague Di Campli specializes in stained glass painting for both new and restoration work. She is an engineer and worked for 12 years in the environmental field, doing stained glass on the side. For the last six years, she has been doing glass full time. Prior to beginning her studio, she studied stained glass techniques in Montreal and Brussels, and then worked at a glass studio in The Hague, refining her glazier skills and teaching stained glass painting. Peter Heijman, Glasatelier Oud Rijswijk, The Hague Heijman is a second-generation glazier and studio owner. As one of the premier glass studios in the Netherlands, his focus is on both creating new panels and the restoration of nationally recognized and museum-quality stained glass, many of which incorporate stained glass painting. He attributes his success to several factors, including an individualized approach to each project and the use/development of new techniques to meet conservation goals. In his view, doing the job efficiently also means doing it safely. A profile of Glasatelier Oud Rijswijk was featured in the Fall 2005 issue of The Stained Glass Quarterly

Bob manages Studio 2000 an arts-based youth employment program in Metro Louisville s Office of Youth Development. The program is open to students in the four years of high school. Studio 2000 contracts with Louisville area artists to teach and inspire their youth apprentices Stained Glass Tour A The Temple 5101 Brownsboro Road In 1976, two old and historic Reform Jewish Congregations were consolidated to create a new home, the Congregation Adath Israel-Brith Sholom. In Judaism, the temple fulfills three traditional and timeless functions: as a House of Prayer (Beit Hatefilah), as a House of Study (Beit Hamidrash) and as a House of Assembly (Beit Hakenesset). These functions are fundamental to The Temple s design. The windows were created by Bob Markert, at that time partner in Fenestra Studio. Be sure to enjoy the fabric mosaic deigned by Mr. Markert and produced by Kate Fischer on the wall opposite the entrance to the Waller Chapel. St. Michael Orthodox Church 3026 Hikes Lane The stained glass, created by Bob Market, echoes the beautiful icons traditional to the Orthodox Church. In Orthodox Christianity, an icon is a dramatic and constant reminder that there is infinitely more to reality than what we see day by day on this earth. Close inspection should also be lent to the incredible hand carved altar screen created by Giorgio Papadopoulos of New York City. Caldwell Chapel of Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary 1044 Alta Vista Road This chapel was designed by architect Fred Louis. The windows were designed by William Schickel and executed by Emil Frei. The mission of the Seminary is to preach an ancient gospel in a modern world. Its windows are a wonderful collection of signs and symbols that capture that continuing challenge. 8 The Stained Glass Association of America
9 St. Andrew s Episcopal Church 2233 Woodbourne Avenue St. Andrew s was designed using simple Georgian architecture. The windows were planned by Reverend Doctor Andrew E.F. Anderson with Robert Markert. The windows were actually copyrighted by the church. In his planning, Dr. Anderson emphasized the idea that Christian art is not to decorate but to serve, and he set forth the standard for the windows: no dim religious light. Lunch at Big Rock Pavilion Cherokee Park Take a break, get a breath of fresh air and enjoy a boxed lunch in the Park. One of the original parks designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, Cherokee Park provides a pastoral setting amid rolling hills, open meadows and woodlands of the Beargrass Creek Valley. Louisville is known for its parks and has carefully reserved and maintained green space throughout the city. Afternoon at the Races If you have signed up to go to the races, following lunch you will leave for Churchill Downs home of the Kentucky Derby! You will have plenty of time to review your guidebook that includes a glossary of racing terms and the rules for betting at the track. Be sure to take some time to tour The Kentucky Derby Museum, featuring an award-winning, High Definition Kentucky Derby film entitled The Greatest Race. Displayed on a 360-degree screen, The Greatest Race places the viewer in the center of Derby Day action. Be sure to also find the Gate 17 entrance. It is housed in a glass atrium that includes a 15-foot equine sculpture in glass by Ken vonroenn. Stained Glass Tour B Highland Baptist Church 1101 Cherokee Road Designed by Bob Market and fabricated by Peter Eichhorn, now of Eichhorn Stained Glass, Inc., the windows of Highland Baptist Church, installed in , are an artistic expression of the church s gospel. The windows, beginning with those closest to the pulpit, follow the spectrum of the rainbow in their colors red, gold, green, blue and violet enveloping the worshippers with the colors of the rainbow, reminding the believers that they are the objects of Covenant love. Calvary Episcopal Church 821 South 4th Street The building, begun in 1872, is a notable example of Victorian Gothic revival style and with its windows, represents the different attitudes and achievements of the late Victorian era. Many very special studios are represented, including Tiffany, Mayer Of Munich and John B. Alberts. First Unitarian Universalist Church of Louisville 809 South Fourth Street After a fire devastated the church built in 1832, parts of the brick and ironwork were kept and used in memorium during the rebuilding of the church. Julia Wirick was selected to create new modern windows that would reflect the church s liberal faith tradition. Ms Wirick is now located in Philadelphia working as an architect

Mulder, University of Virginia An Art and architectural historian, Mulder will complete her dissertation at the University of Virginia in 2006, describing how the postwar context in Germany fostered a uniquely innovative movement in glass design. Her initial research on Johannes Schreiter and postwar German glass received recognition for distinguished intellectual achievement at Yale University, where she was the Menil Scholar of Visual Art. Dennis Harmon, Jim Piercey, Andy Young and Karen Mulder: A Discussion of the German Movement These three well-known stained glass designers have all had an opportunity to study under German artists and will discuss how the German movement has influenced their sense of design. Karen Mulder will also be joining this discussion panel. Dennis Harmon, Emmanuel Stained Glass Studio, Nashville, TN; Past SGAA President Harmon s German influence began in 1981 with studies under Ludwig Schaffrath. The primary topic of stained glass design was the architectural influence and its impact on the environment. More importantly, Harmon was taught to constantly ask himself, Why am I designing this stained glass window? Jim Piercey, J. Piercey Studios, Inc., Orlando, FL Piercey has studied under both Ludwig Schaffrath and Johannes Schreiter. His studio has completed numerous religious and public (Art-in-Public-Spaces) commissions, some of which have been recognized by various publications, awards and honors. Inspired by the work of Schaffrath, Jim has begun developing techniques in stone and glass mosaic. Andy Young, Pearl River Glass Studio, Inc. Jackson, MS; Current SGAA President Schaffrath gave Young the nuts and bolts for designing stained glass for architecture. Stockhausen was a far more spiritual influence and Young was greatly influenced by his painterly methods. Andreyev taught him discipline; the process of design is influenced by discernment. The results of his labor include many church commissions of his own design executed by the hands of a dedicated group of talented studio artists and craftsmen. A special thanks to S. A. Bendheim for music by The Walnut Street Blues Band. Some people get up to play the blues and think that all you do is play three changes, Foree Wells always used to say. [But] there s more to it than that. The blues is a feeling. Foree implemented that philosophy as the founder and leader of the Walnut Street Blues Band, which he formed with his sons Michael (guitar), Greg (keyboard and horns), and Foree III (drums) in The father/sons team enjoyed performing around Louisville and at regional blues festivals for several years, playing music to rock the listener s body down to the bone. But then tragedy struck. In December 1996, Foree and his sons were anxiously awaiting the release of their Rooster Records album It s a New 10 The Stained Glass Association of America
11 Day, Brother when Foree was taken ill. He died on January 8, His sons were determined to carry on, though, and today the Walnut Street Blues Band is again performing. Michael and Greg still head the band, and there have been two new additions: vocalist Artie Wells and drummer Jerry Harshaw. The group is also collaborating on a recording contract and plans to release that long-overdue CD. Awards Banquet Speaker Ed Hamilton, Maker of Monuments: Finding Your Muse While growing up in Louisville, Kentucky, and becoming a sculptor, I have had people constantly ask me how I got started in my career as a professional artist. How did I acquire commissions? How do I balance the demands of being selfemployed and maintaining family obligations? How did my parents and others support me as a child to develop my artistic talents? There were times I wondered and questioned how all the pieces of this puzzle would come together. One thing that is apparent to me, I had a lot of help along the way while creating national monuments, searching for my muses, the truth and a sense of identity. Ed Hamilton, Ed Hamilton Studios, Inc. Hamilton is a graduate of the Louisville School of Art. He began his career as an apprentice under the late sculptor Barney Bright. He has received numerous honorary doctorates and art awards. Hamilton has many works in both private and corporate collections, including the Amistad Memorial, Joe Louis Memorial and the Booker T. Washington Memorial. The Speed Art Museum houses a permanent collection, From the Other Side. Recently, Ed finished working on a memorial to honor York, the slave of William Clark. York was a vital part of the Lewis and Cark Expedition. Hamilton also spends his time teaching workshops and lectures for public schools, colleges and conferences. Hamilton s newly released autobiography, The Birth of an Artist: A Journey of Discovery, chronicles his artistic journey. The book will be for sale at the conference, and Hamilton will be available for signatures at the Awards Banquet

14 THE SGAA AND THE STAINED GLASS SCHOOL WORK TOGETHER TO ADVANCE EDUCATION. Last year, The Stained Glass School began a new program to design hands-on classes for our members within the framework of the SGAA conferences. Continuing education and the education of new artists is of primary importance to the agenda of the School s Board Members. It was hoped to keep cost as low as possible and yet provide instructors of the highest caliber. The program was met with such eagerness by the artist instructor s that were approached, that they agreed to volunteer their time and facilities to create incredible opportunities for learning. This year The Stained Glass School would like to thank the following artists: Guy Kemper Robert Markert Don Carlos Thomas Ken von Roenn Guy Kemper Born in Louisville, Kentucky, Guy Kemper has received acclaim in recent years for his painterly style and use of ground-breaking techniques. He is particularly active in the design of large public art projects and liturgical commissions. Recent projects include the Catholic Memorial at Ground Zero and Baltimore/Washington International Airport. Robert Markert While busy with Studio 2000, Bob is still very active as a stained glass designer. Bob founded Fenestra Studios, Inc. in 1969 and operated Fenestra until December 31, 1986, when he sold his studio to become an independent designer. Fenestra Studios, Inc. was a studio member of the SGAA, and Bob was an active member as a member of the Board as a Vice-president, and as the Chairman of the SGAA s Publications Committee during the early 1980 s. Bob has work in the permanent collections of many private collectors as well as in the Owensboro Museum of Fine Art in Owensboro, Ky. He is also an ordained Catholic Deacon, since 1976, is married to Patsy, his wife for 40 years, and has 4 children and 9 grandchildren. Don Carlos Thomas Don Carlos Thomas has been in the architectural glass business for over thirty years. He earned his degree in Fine Arts and teaching from Western Thomas has been in the architectural glass business for over thirty years. After earning a Fine Arts degree from Western Kentucky University he went on to work as a craftsman at Louisville Art Glass and later for River City Glass then started his own studio, which he ran for twenty years. He now works as a staff designer and craftsman for Architectural Glass, formerly Louisville Art Glass. Thomas has extensive experience in both design and fabrication; specializing in glass painting He focuses primarily on ecclesiastical commissions and offers unique interpretations of age-old themes. Ken vonroenn Kenneth Frederick vonroenn, Jr. began his career in glass in In1981 he earned his masters degree in Architecture from Yale University, then went on to work as an architect and glass designer. In 1991, vonroenn bought Louisville Art Glass Studio and renamed it Architectural Glass Art, Inc., where he serves as head designer and president. He expanded the company redirecting its focus on new roles for glass in architecture. The studio has become recognized for its innovative application of new technologies. He has executed hundreds of projects nationally and internationally including the world s largest glass sculpture which crowns the top of Wachovia Bank in Charlotte North Carolina. Again, our thanks to these very special artists for donating their time and energy to bring the best in stained glass education to our membership. If you did not have an opportunity to register for these classes presented in Louisville, be sure to make plans for classes next year in Charlotte, North Carolina. 14 The Stained Glass Association of America

Then a small community of Scotch-Irish descendents, Charlotte was incorporated in 1768 and named in honor of the wife of King George III, the reigning English monarch. Local citizens also honored Queen Charlotte when they named their new county Mecklenburg after her German homeland. That's why Charlotte is called the "Queen City." With the excitement of a cosmopolitan city and the ease of Southern charm, Charlotte presents a unique atmosphere where big city style meets down-home appeal. Charlotte s museums and cultural attractions are among the finest in the country and are certain to please a wide variety of interests from fine art to hands-on-science exhibits, from historical sites to renowned botanical gardens.
