1 THE MASTERS VOICE OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER - SAMSA JULY 2006 REPORT 5 TH SOUTH AFRICAN MASTERS GAMES The South African Masters Sports Association in conjunction with its valuable partners, Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Council and Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism, staged another successful, biennial Masters Games in the city of Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape. 30 Sport codes at 33 venues participated in the Games Athletes, officials and companions from all corners of the country, as well as from Barbados, Sri Lanka, Germany, Kazakhstan, Russia and Armenia participated. Team sport as usual fielded the most participants. Netball, the biggest woman team sport in South Africa, which entered 20 teams from all over the country, was the Games leader in numbers and a participating code in all 5 Masters Games since An applaudable effort by co-ordinator Reg Sharp and committee. The Greeff family from the Gauteng West team made history by playing three sisters of various ages in their team. Wrestling, as individual sport entered the most participants as well as the most International competitors. HATS OFF! To the codes which participated notwithstanding limited entries and sudden changes in weather conditions. CHESS newcomer to the SA Masters Games and smallest entry made a brave effort to be part of the Games under the enthusiastic leadership of Eddie Price, President of SA senior chess. The only sport with no local entries. SNOOKER Co-ordinator, Deon Williamson, with limited numbers staged a most successful event for local competitors. TENTPEGGING with three provincial teams from N.E. Cape, E.P. and W.P. gave a magnificent display of rider and horse, entertaining spectators on the beach front. The W.P. team whose own horses were under quarantine for African Horse sickness, had to ride unfamiliar horses, brought for them by the E.P. and N.E.C. teams. Andre Murray from Beaufort West, was the chief organizer of this spectacular event. David Pickard, Cambridge Member of the E.P. team is South A frica s oldest tentpegger and only Grand Master in the sport. Honoured by all masters. ARCHERY were forced indoors after their arrows were lost in the wind. The weather conditions never dampened their spirit and they continued their competition at the SA Wool indoor shed. Praise goes to Johan Calitz, co-ordinator and Melville David, LOC venue organizer, for their commendable arrangements. TENNIS was blessed with good weather right until the players shook hands for the last match when the heavens opened. SAMSA wishes to pay tribute to all code co-ordinators for their dedication in staging such well organized events. Their voluntary service to fellow masters was sincerely appreciated by all participants. THE LOCAL ORGANIZING COMMITTEE of Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality, host the 5 th South African Masters Games, played a paramount role in the enjoyment and success of S A M S A S biennial m ajor event of 2006 under the leadership of Jurg Bekker, sport manager, together with members of his committee they performed an applaudable task in supplying excellent venues, a friendly and efficiently run office a pleasure to visit, special transport to our international & national visitors, hostesses at the airport to assist & welcome arriving guests, and although they could not change weather conditions, they did change outdoor to indoor venues in record times. SPECIAL RECOGNITION and appreciation go to JURG BEKKER, chief organizer, ALJO NEL, a caring and most capable Games secretary, to FERNANDO CAIN, venue co-ordinator (including his offices as the popular Games Beach office) to MELVILLE DAVID, co-ordinator outdoor venues together with various other portfolios he handled so efficiently (Grand prix candidate in our midst) To PAUL NIEMANN, indoor venue co-ordinator, another stalwart in rendering excellent service on many fronts to many codes. To PETRUS BOUKES, University venues and facility co-ordinator for his efficient assistance and cooperation. THE VALUABLE FINANCIAL SUPPORT of the host Council played the pivotal part in the Games. Recognized by SAMSA & all masters. T he sw eetness of a marshmallow made the losing of a game and an individual competition so much more bearable! NELSON MANDELA BAY TOURISM played a most efficient role in securing accommodation for every visitor. Organizing the opening get together at the Boardwalk and its financial support towards SAMSA advert in the souvenir programme of the World Masters Games, Edmonton, Canada in 2005,

2 bringing international participants to the SA Masters Games. Recognition goes to Phumeza Mgxashe, Manager Communications and staff, for their loyal support. THE GALA FUNCTION was held at a venue, unique in the world. The happy dancers never stopped until the final whistle, enjoying the soft sea sand, only to pay the price the next day. The bar service was a disaster. Second helpings were offered by the caterers. The waiting in queues gave all guests the opportunity to meet new and old friends. SAMSA greatly appreciates the service of all REFEREES, UMPIRES, JUDGES, COACHES and MANAGERS. The support and encouragement By our COMPANIONS will always be welcomed. Last but not least, all masters honour the presence of our Grand Masters, the role models in Masters sport. The future of sport for Life, rests entirely in the hands of our present Masters who should encourage and promote participation by the next generation in their sport. In conclusion I wish to thank S A M S A S E XECUTIVE COMMITTEE for their loyal support and co-operation during the planning of the 2006 Games.
