3 MEETING NOTES Meeting/Project Name: Heritage Assets Working Group Date of Meeting: (MM/DD/YYYY) 11/29/2016 5:00-6:00 pm MacLachlan Woodworking Museum Meeting Notes:, City Curator 1. Notes, Decisions, Issues Topic Tour of MacLachlan Woodworking Museum s collections facility and overview of civic collection. Members were introduced to the organisational arrangement of the facility and the history and attributes of the MWM collection stored on site. Staff reviewed the strengths and challenges of the collection and of its current storage facility and the need to conduct a collections storage review for the entire civic collection. Proposed new member of the HAWG. Barb Neatby, formerly with the registration department at the Royal Ontario Museum, has expressed interest in becoming a member of the working group. Owner / Meaghan Eckersley / Tom Riddolls Proposed new acquisitions. Staff presented the following items for consideration as potential new acquisitions for the civic collection: 1) Six (6) boxes of artefacts connected with the Market Square excavation (Archaeological Excavation and Mitigation of Market Square, BbGc-88, Kingston ON; Projects 06-14, 07-11). Owner: Nick Gromoff, Ground Truth Archaeology. a. Reason to acquire: This material is part of the existing Market Square collection now part of the civic archaeology collection (Projects 00-20, 05-16). This new material was excavated under license by N. Gromoff he would like to transfer it permanently to the care of the City. These artefacts complete existing holdings connected with Market Square archaeology and are relevant to the history of the City and City Hall. To be used for exhibition, research, loans to other institutions. to Council to accept the transfer of remaining items from the Market Square archaeology collection held by Nick Gromoff to the stewardship of the City as part of the civic archaeology collection. 98

4 2) Two (2) glass bottles (William Pipe, Kingston and Ottawa). Owner: Mike Sargent, Kingston. a. Reason to acquire: The William Pipe Bottling Co. operated in 19 th -century Kingston. The bottles represent material cultural evidence of Kingston manufacturing and commercial enterprise. These 1870s examples (Kingston bowling pin soda water; Ottawa squat soda) complete the collection of William Pipe bottles donated previously by Mr. Sargent. To be used for exhibition, research, loans to other institutions. to Council to accept two William Pipe Bottling Co. bottles owned by Mike Sargent for the civic collection. 3) Heritage furniture items. Kingston Frontenac Public Library, Central Branch. a. Reason to acquire: the KFPL has offered to transfer a number of items of heritage furniture currently housed at the Central Branch to City for use at City Hall. The collection consists of tables, chairs, sofas and a storage box. The items were donated to the library at some point in the past for use in the Special Collections Room they do not have identified histories or obvious Kingston connections. The library has determined that it will not be possible to accommodate these pieces after the current facilty refurbishment is completed in Although stylisitically appropriate to City Hall, Staff recommended to the HAWG that these pieces should be acquired as heritage assets to decorate City Hall, and not be added to the civic collection. to Council to accept the transfer of a collection of heritage furniture from the Kingston Frontenac Public Library, Central Branch to the City of Kingston for use as heritage assets at City Hall. 4) Collection of woodworking tools. The HAWG continued its discussion about a large collection of 480 tools offered by a Ottawa collector Fred Hostetter. Staff provided further details. The focus of selections will be based upon existing collection needs, museum mandates and potential uses for research/exhibitions/education purposes only objects that fill gaps and are of Ontario and/or Canadian production will be considered for potential acquisition. This item will return to the HAWG when the tools consultant working with staff has made a recommendation on what to acquire. Tom Riddolls 99

5 Other business: 1) Collection issues: Members discussed the nature of what museums should be collecting, the sharing of collections between institutions and the avoidance of duplicates, the role of specialist collections such as the MacLachlan s with its role on woodworking craft and technology. Is it the role of the City to maintain such collections? They also discussed the role of museum collections and research (by staff and outside researchers). 2) Future mandate of civic museum collections: Members asked what the future mandate for civic museum collections may be, the future evolving role of the museums itself, and how collections decisions must be based on these things. Staff explained that there are plans to address these issues over the next year. 3) Anglican Diocese of Ontario, Archives Collection. P. Gower advised the HAWG that the Diocese has sold its Johnson Street office and in December 2016 will be moving to a smaller facility on Ontario Street. He raised concerns about the future housing and management of the archives collection which includes parish and diocesan records from across the Diocese of Ontario (most of eastern Ontario outside Ottawa). At the time of the meeting, no official plans for the archives had been released. (UPDATE: 30 Nov. 2016) P. Gower has learned that the Diocese is currently making plans for the housing and management of the archival collection. Action Owner Due Date Set next meeting TBD 2. Next Meeting (if applicable) Objective: Date: To address potential collections acquisitions and other collections matters. TBD (as business arises) 4:00-6:00 pm City Hall 100
