JOHN COWPER POWYS An important and remarkable series of some 800 love letters, , from John Cowper Powys to Phyllis Playter, his companion for over thirty years until his death in POCKET BIBLE

18 A good example, the first to be acquired by the Library, of one of the most remarkable achievements of medieval book production, the 13th-century pocket bible (NLW MS 22050A). This example, measuring 128 x 85mm, of English or possibly French origin, has decoration of high quality and a few historiated initials. It was in England, perhaps in Cambridge, in the early 16th century. BOOK OF HOURS A late 14th-century book of hours, the product of a recognised London workshop, with two historiated initials and attractive decoration, many leaves missing and some damaged (NLW MS 22051A). The binding appears to be original. On a flyleaf in a 15th-century hand a mariner has noted the bearings of various landmarks on both sides of the Bristol Channel and of the Irish Sea, among which 'The Momels', 'Worymshede', 'Tynby', 'Calde' and 'Saynt Davys Head' may be familiar.
