Twenty-eight holograph letters from Augustus John to the following addressees: `Laura' (Dame Laura Knight, 2 letters, 1938, concerning John's resignation from the Royal Academy), `Kassie' (3 letters, 1939, 1940 and May 11), Miss Stevenson (Frances Stevenson, later Countess Lloyd George of Dwyfor, 7 letters, 1919, Feb. 13 and n.d. [probably mostly, if not all, 1919], several of these letters contain interesting details concerning John's commission to paint the Paris Peace Conference in 1919) `Haddon' (2 letters, 1927 and 12 July [? 1927], concerning Jack Knewstub), [Chaloner] Dowdall (1 letter, 1914), Miss Lion (1 letter, 1935, John's inability to contribute a work to the exhibition of disabled ex-servicemen's industries), Mr. Sadler (2 letters, 1913 and 1918), Mr. Russell (2 letters, 1947 and 1953, book reviewing), `Castle' and Mrs. Castle (1 letter, `Sunday' [c. Holograph manuscript and typescript of an article by John entitled `Ecole de Paris' ; holograph description by John, with diagrams, of what appears to be a sea creature; press cuttings and other items concerning the exhibition `Augustus John in Liverpool', held at the Walker Art Gallery Liverpool, in 1954; proofs and typescripts of articles by John entitled `Elephants with Beards' (concerning Wyndham Lewis), `Dylan Thomas & Company', and `Roy Campbell under the Caryatids ; together with various miscellaneous items. 3. A manuscript volume of thirty folios containing Welsh strict-metre poetry, mainly `cywyddau', bound in a half morrocco case-binding in 1912 by J. B. Sconce of Chester, and bearing the words `TALACRE MSS.' in gold lettering on the front cover. The manuscript is written in a clear Secretary hand, not dissimilar to the first hand found in Wynnstay MS. 10, and probably dates from the middle of the seventeenth century. According to the original foliation, four folios are missing at the beginning of the manuscript and part of the manuscript is missing at the end ; folios are also missing between the present ff. 9 and 10, and ff. 21 and 22. The paper has been repaired extensively with translucent paper. The volume contains poetry attributed to the following poets: Tho[mas] Prys, Y Meister Sion Tudur, Sr. Gruffydd Owen, y Bedo Brwynllys, Bedo Aryrddrem, Huw Arwystl, Rys Cain, Morys Dwyfech, Sion Phylip, Sr Dafydd Owain, Sr Phylip Emlyn, Ifan Dyfi, Dafydd ap Gwilim, Wm llyn, Sion Cain, y Meistr Hughe Machno, Einion ab Gwalchmai, Sion Mowddwy, Tudur Aled, Dafydd ap Edmwnt, Dafydd Nanmor, Gwillim tew brydydd, Lewis Môn, William Cynwal, Mr Roberts or tu hwnt ir môr, and Simwnt vychan, and f. 30 contains notes from a bardic grammar concerning two types of englyn. Within the manuscript there are annotations in an eighteenth century hand which give the floruit dates of some of the poets, e.g. f. 3 `1500 medd Thomas Richards. These are taken from the list found at the end of Thomas Richards of Coychurch's dictionary, Antiquae Linguae Britannicae Thesaurus... (Bristol, 1753). The manuscript's connection with the Mostyn family of Talacre is illustrated by the inclusion of an `awdl' to Pyrs Mostyn on f. 27v. and by a note found loose at the end of the volume stating that the manuscript was bound in 1912 by Lady Mostyn, wife of the ninth baronet. Lazenby to her uncle John Lazenby in Brecon, September 1853, September 1878, October 1879, and July 1880 (NLW Facsimiles 213), and also of eleven letters, and n.d., of the Lazenby family, eight of the letters being to or from the aforesaid John Lazenby and his wife Anne (NLW Facsimiles 214). John Lazenby had been appointed gaoler and keeper of the House of Correction at Brecon in June 1837 and his wife had been appointed matron. The writer describes their embarkation from Gibraltar (26 October), the voyage to Cape Town (disembarked 15 November), the march to the front, first contact with the Boers (23 November), subsequent fighting (Belmont, Graspan, Modder River, Magersfontein, Driefontein, etc.), the entry into Johannesberg (31 May 1900), the surrender of Pretoria (5 June 1900), etc. A notebook containing, in alphabetical order, lists of British firms and their products probably compiled as a trade directory (NLW Misc Volumes 101).
