4 Biographical/ Historical Note Rosalie Deaton Dillard was born on June 25, 1902, in Richwoods, Arkansas, and died October 17, 2001, at the age of ninety-nine in Gurdon, Arkansas. Her grandparents were Judge Goodin ( ) and Amanda Malcolm Williams Deaton ( ). Her grandfather migrated to Alpine, Arkansas, in Her parents were Alonzo Franklin ( ) and Ruth Nash Deaton. She graduated from Arkadelphia High School in 1919 and attended Ouachita Baptist College for one year. She then transferred to Arkansas State Teacher s College and obtained a teaching license. Rosalie completed her teaching degree at Henderson State Teacher s College in Arkadelphia. Rosalie taught school in Richwoods, Okolona, Hebron, and Copeland Ridge, Arkansas. She married Charles F. Dillard in 1926 and moved to Gurdon. Rosalie taught in the public school system in Gurdon, and her husband worked as a forest ranger for Clark County. They were members of the Beech Street Baptist Church in Gurdon. Rosalie collected and photographed wild flowers with help from her husband. She frequently gave slide show presentations of her collection to different clubs. She belonged to the following Organizations: The Garden Club, the Women s Missionary organization, Clark County Fair Board, the Kadachadacho Club, Arkansas Federated Women s Club, the Clark County Library Board, the Retired Teachers Association, the National Board for Daffodil Society, and the Gurdon Hospital Municipal Board. Scope and Contents Rosalie Deaton Dillard s life is documented by the personal diaries, yearly scrapbooks, newspaper clippings, club and organization materials, correspondence, photographs, and memorabilia found in this collection. She included about 200 slides of assorted wildflowers in her collection. There are newsletters and educational symposium materials in the Arkansas Educational Association subseries while the Daughters of the American Revolution subseries incorporate organization guidelines, reading materials, and club activities information. Personal papers include wartime ration books, teacher contracts, and a passenger's log for the Alcoa Cavalier. Dillard's scrapbooks are grouped by the following topics: Gurdon events, Valentine's Day cards, garden club scrapbooks, Business Woman's Circle, Woman's Missionary Union, Kappa Kappa Iota, and yearly scrapbooks. The yearly scrapbooks reflect current events and significant personal occurrences for the particular year represented by each scrapbook. Arrangement is by topic. - Page 4 -
