Although we did not have an overwhelming number of residents who were sick, our Medical Director felt it was necessary to limit exposure to all residents and closed the facility to visitors and new admissions. Fortunately we were only closed for a brief time, and we are now looking forward to spring and nice weather, and the start of a wonderful summer filled with fun activities. ~ Kathy D.

2 P a g e 2 The Maples March 2018 Resident Reflections-Diane Waters Diane Marie Waters was born on March 9, 1957 at Paul Oliver Hospital in Frankfort. Her parents, George Taylor Waters and Margaret Eagan Waters, had a busy household raising Diane and her six brothers and sisters. Diane remembers getting mad at all those siblings when she was around five years old. She would stomp down the sidewalk from their home on Elm Street to her grandma s house on Main Street. The ladies along the route would call her grandma to let her know the little Black Storm Cloud was on her way. Diane graduated from Frankfort High School in 1975 where she was active in the student choir. She has worked hard all her life and worked as a housekeeper for motels, worked making hangers, worked as a clerk at the drug store, worked at Camp Crystal-aire, and worked at the Garden and Crystal Theaters. In 1977 she worked as a CNA at The Maples for 12 years and then in Housekeeping for 18 years. She then worked for seven years as a home health caregiver. When she wasn t working, Diane enjoyed gardening, reading, knitting, crocheting, cross stitch, doing word search puzzles, and doing adult coloring. Diane has travelled through New England, Falls Creek in Tennessee, and Hocking Hill in Ohio. While she enjoyed those trips, each reminded her that we live in the best area of all. Diane s favorite colors are blues, greens, and purples. Her favorite animals are cats and her favorite food is chocolate. Her happiest memory is the day her granddaughter, Maci, was born and she loves getting visits from both her daughter and granddaughter. Diane would like to be remembered as someone who is compassionate, empathic, fun, and a good listener. She is very appreciative of all the words of encouragement she has received from staff and residents and all the care she has received.

3 Page 3 The Maples The Maples Candlelight Dinner Our Candlelight Dinner brings our residents together with their families and friends for an evening of elegance, delicious food, and music. This year, our dinner was held on Valentine s Day and was a wonderful evening for everyone. March 2018

5 P a g e 5 T h e M apl e s March 2018 Valentine s Day The residents had a great time making Valentine s Day crafts with the ladies from Benzonia Congregational Church. They made colorful banners using paint and heart shaped sponges. They added messages of love and Bible verses and then spent some time singing together. The residents were able to take the banners with them and decorate their rooms. Mardi Gras The residents got together for a Mardi Gras celebration with masks, beads, and special treats. They also played a Mardi Gras trivia game and learned a few things along the way. The Mardi Gras parade dates back to 1837 and is always the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. The official colors of Mardi Gras are purple, which stands for justice; gold, which stands for power; and green, which stands for faith. Floats appeared in the parades in 1857 and there are different krewes for each float. If you participate in the parade, it is illegal for anyone to be on a float without a mask it s the law!

6 Page 6 The Maples March 2018 For The Birds If you stop by The Maples to visit and you hear a constant thump, thump, thump coming from the second floor, chances are you are hearing Ed Alkire, one of our residents, working on making birdhouses. Ed has a gift for woodworking and has been cutting, sanding, and assembling birdhouses at his work station in Activities for the past few weeks. So far, he has made over 60 birdhouses and the other residents now get the fun task of painting them all. Souper Bowl Soup Contest The Activity staff recently organized a Souper Bowl Soup Contest for the staff. The soups were delicious and the staff truly enjoyed the tasting and voting. Third place went to Gina Dilas for her Cheddar Cheese Broccoli soup; second place went to Nicole Miller for her Swedish Meatball soup; and first place went to Kevin Conley (second year in a row!) for his Italian Wedding Soup. Thanks to everyone who participated and warmed us up on a cold winter s day.
