2 1617 Nick Lafontaine Eric Gauthier has created an exceptional ensemble featuring some of the world s finest choreographic talents, performed by a stellar group of dancers. One of our favourite Canadians at large, Eric moved to Stuttgart as a dancer and soon after founded Gauthier Dance//Dance Company Theaterhaus Stuttgart, now celebrating its 10 th year. And as we celebrate our Sesquicentennial Year in Canada, it is a fitting moment to shine a light on his incredible success abroad. Eric is always searching and developing, commissioning new works on a regular basis and expanding the reach and experience of his talented company. In addition to Gauthier Dance, Eric has recently created COLOURS, a biennial, international Dance festival which presents and co-produces dance troupes from around the world. In a specially designed program for his NAC premiere, we re being treated to a beautiful blend of company favourites and work hot off the press from Gauthier Dance s 10 th anniversary celebrations. 4 Ballet 101 Eric Gauthier Jens-Peter Abele Choreography / Chorégraphie Soundtrack / Trame sonore Premiere / Création : 2006, Noverre Gesellschaft, Stuttgart Ballet 101 is Eric Gauthier s humorous crash course in classical ballet. Using the basic five positions as his starting point, Gauthier creates 100 positions with tongue in cheek references to famous ballets and choreographers. The first section demonstrates the positions, the second half of the piece combines them randomly to create a choreography with a surprise ending. Ballet 101 est le «cours accéléré» humoristique de ballet classique d Eric Gauthier. À partir des cinq positions de base, le chorégraphe crée 100 positions, à grand renfort de clins d œil moqueurs à des ballets et chorégraphes célèbres. La première partie fait la démonstration des différentes positions, la deuxième les combine au hasard pour créer une chorégraphie qui se conclut de manière inattendue. This was a question Alejandro Cerrudo wanted to explore when he created Pacopepepluto as part of a choreography workshop at Hubbard Street Dance in Chicago in The work consists in a series of solos by three male dancers set to songs crooned by the King of Cool Dean Martin. Paco, Pepe and Pluto, three men clad only in flesh-coloured dance belts, seem to be dancing in their own world rather than for the members of the audience, who remain unnoticed, almost like voyeurs only able to view the event surreptitiously. Voilà une question qu Alejandro Cerrudo a voulu explorer lorsqu il a créé Pacopepepluto dans le cadre d un atelier de chorégraphie à Hubbard Street Dance à Chicago, en La chorégraphie est composée d une série de solos dansés par trois hommes sur des chansons interprétées par Dean Martin, le «Roi du Cool». Paco, Pepe et Pluto, trois danseurs qui ne portent qu un sous-vêtement de couleur chair, sont absorbés dans leur propre univers et semblent danser pour eux-mêmes plutôt que pour le public, qu ils ignorent et qui a en quelque sorte un rôle de voyeur, observant cette activité en cachette. Its passionate and visceral gestures evoke a Mediterranean and wild type of beauty. An instinctual and vital dance, it explores the various facets of the relationship between man and woman: seduction, passion, quarrels, jealousy. In this ballet, created after my encounter with a group of musicians from Naples and Puglia, dance and music strongly intermingle. Mauro Bigonzetti Cantata éclate de couleurs vives typiquement associées au Sud. Sa gestuelle passionnée et viscérale évoque une beauté méditerranéenne et sauvage. Cette danse instinctive et vitale explore les différentes facettes d une relation entre un homme et une femme : la séduction, la passion, les disputes, la jalousie. Dans ce ballet, créé à la suite de ma rencontre avec un groupe de musiciens de Naples et des Pouilles, la danse et la musique sont étroitement liées. The Dance Company Theaterhaus Stuttgart presents contemporary dance by Gauthier and internationally renowned choreographers such as Mauro Bigonzetti, William Forsythe, Jiří Kylián, Itzik Galili, Paul Lightfoot/Sol León and Hans van Manen. Set up in October 2007, Gauthier Dance established itself on the German dance scene with record speed and has become an international brand. During the first years, the company s acclaim was based on their original, humorous bills that also attracted a large young audience. 8 POPPEA//POPPEA which became the first full-length dance piece to be turned into a 3D film and was broadcast on the French-German television channel Arte in February Parallel to its growing fame, Gauthier Dance has intensified collaborations with international star choreographers. Following the rave success of Mauro Bigonzetti s narrative ballet Alice the next full-length piece saw its world premiere in June 2016: Marco Goecke s exploration of the myth NIJINSKI a ballet which was equally celebrated by critics and audiences and is widely regarded as another milestone in the company s development. On top of a busy touring schedule with, among others, stops at the Festival Internacional Madrid en Danza 2016 or the Joyce Theater New York, the company celebrated its 10th anniversary on March 1, 2017 with the première of the mixed bill BIG FAT TEN at Theaterhaus Stuttgart. Gauthier Dance also undertakes an extensive Educational and Community Outreach program, the first of its kind in Germany: Gauthier Dance Mobile. With a specially tailored repertory of works which can be presented in small performing spaces, Gauthier Dance Mobile brings contemporary dance to youth centres, hospitals or retirement homes. The Theaterhaus Stuttgart, which opened in 1985, is a unique cultural centre which presents theatre, music, dance, cabaret, comedy, literature, political discussions and more on a total of four stages. The Theaterhaus has a long tradition of producing and presenting dance theatre; best known are the collaborations between Marcia Haydée and Ismail Ivo. The Theaterhaus has also traditionally been and continues to be, a venue for the freelance dance scene in Stuttgart. The German Dance Prize Future was awarded to Eric Gauthier in 2011 for choreography and the German Theatre Prize THE FAUST was awarded to Gauthier Dance in 2011 and 2013, illustrate the reputation that the company of currently 16 dancers has gained since In the critics survey of the German magazine tanz, Eric Gauthier was twice nominated as Dancer of the Year for the solo I Found A Fox that Marco Goecke created for him. Recent kudos include his listing among the Great Hopes 2016 in the new yearbook of tanz and the prize for Best Duet at the 2016 Dance Open Ballet Festival in St. Petersburg for his piece Punk Love. Top companies worldwide have taken Gauthier s works into their repertoire including the Staatsballett Berlin, the St. Petersburg Mariinsky Ballet, the Stuttgart Ballet, Scapino Ballet Rotterdam or Het Nationale Ballet Amsterdam. Devised by Gauthier and produced by Theaterhaus Stuttgart, COLOURS International Dance Festival 2015 created a stir in the international dance world. Eric Gauthier was awarded the Order of Merit of the State of Baden-Württemberg and is a member of the board of trustees of the Alzheimer s Foundation Baden-Württemberg. JOHAN INGER Johan Inger was born in Stockholm and trained at the Royal Swedish Ballet School and the National Ballet School in Toronto. His career as a dancer began in 1985 with the ensemble of the Royal Swedish Ballet, where he became a soloist in One year later, Inger accepted Jiří Kylián s invitation to join the Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT) and went on to become one of the company s most distinguished dancers. After taking his first steps as a choreographer in NDT workshops, Inger created his first original work, titled Mellantid, for NDT 2 in The piece was presented at the Holland Dance Festival and proved an impressive debut. In 1996 it won the Philip Morris Finest Selection Award and in 2001 it was nominated for the Laurence Olivier Award. Johan Inger left NDT in 2003 to become artistic director of Sweden s Cullberg Ballet. He resigned his position in 2008 in order to devote himself to freelance choreography. Since 2009 he has been Associate Choreographer with the NDT. His works have been performed by renowned companies throughout the world and have won numerous awards, de la danse. JOHAN INGER Johan Inger est né à Stockholm et a reçu sa formation à l école du Ballet royal de Suède et à l École nationale de ballet de Toronto. ALEJANDRO CERRUDO Born in Madrid, Spain, Alejandro Cerrudo trained at the Real Conservatorio Profesional de Danza de Madrid. Since beginning to work as a professional dancer with the Victor Ullate Ballet in Madrid in 1998, Cerrudo s dance career has been shaped by a range of different dance companies, including the Stuttgart Ballet, Nederlands Dans Theater 2 (NDT 2) and, since 2005, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, where he is now the resident choreographer a position especially created for him in To date, Cerrudo has choreographed 13 works for Hubbard Street, including co-productions with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the NDT. His works now feature in the repertoires of dance companies around the world, including in Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands and Australia. Gauthier Dance s repertoire also includes a Cerrudo piece, Lickety Split. In 2012, the choreographer s Memory Glow, which was commissioned by the Pacific Northwest Ballet, was awarded the Joyce Theater Foundation s Rudolf Nureyev Prize. 13 ANDONIS FONIADAKIS Born in Crete, Andonis Foniadakis first studied dance in Athens and then at the École-Atelier Rudra Béjart in Lausanne, thanks to a Maria Callas scholarship. As a dancer, Andonis has performed with Béjart Ballet Lausanne ( ) under the direction of Maurice Béjart; Lyon Opera Ballet ( ) under the direction of Yorgos Loukos; and Karas (2004) Saburo Teshigawara s company. He has worked with many well-known choreographers such as Jiří Kylián, William Forsythe and Mats Ek. He founded his own dance company, Apotosoma, in Lyon in He has gained international recognition as a choreographer with works for dance ensembles such as the Martha Graham Dance Company, the Brazilian Balé da Cidade de São Paulo, the Finnish Helsinki Dance Company, the French Opéra national du Rhin and many more. In 2012 he received the Danza & Danza Award for Best Choreography 2012 in Italy for the creation of Les Noces with MaggioDanza. In addition to his much-respected work as a choreographer, Foniadakis teaches his own dance technique and gives workshops in choreography worldwide. Since September 2016, Andoni Foniadakis has been the director of the Greek National Opera Ballet. MAURO BIGONZETTI Mauro Bigonzetti ranks among the leading choreographers worldwide. His work has had a tremendous impact on contemporary dance. Born in Rome, he received his training at the Teatro dell Opera Ballet School of his native city and entered the Ballet of the Opera of Rome directly after his graduation.
