Artistic Director Madeleine Onne has assembled three works that together display the creativity and artistry of these inspiring dancers. From the reputable wizardry of Spain s Nacho Duato to the elegant virtuosity of Polish-born Krzysztof Pastor, then circling back to China s own very lyrical Li Jun, we are immersed in a company that majestically blends its Asian roots with the diverse spectrum of contemporary ballet. Musical, colourful, joyful and eclectic, Hong Kong Ballet is fast becoming an internationally recognized and acclaimed troupe as it continues touring the world. The classical Western art form of ballet is fused with music, costumes and an aesthetic that is unmistakably Chinese. These combined influences swirl together to form a free-flowing experimental piece that includes key elements of traditional Chinese dance and tai chi. Set to a unique piece of music by composer Ah Yan, which includes Chinese string and woodwind instruments, everything from the abstract ink art set design to the traditional Chinese costumes paired with pointe shoes worn by Dancing with the Wind donne vie, par le mouvement, à la pensée et à l inspiration de son créateur. Nine of Hong Kong Ballet s powerful men take over the stage in Nacho Duato s Castrati. Set to a blend of Vivaldi s and Karl Jenkins richly structured music, Nacho Duato s work is a deeply affecting, powerful piece. The perfectly constructed ballet explores the meaning of masculinity and the significance of sacrifice in a world that demands perfection. South China Morning Post has described the piece, stating that Duato s choreography combines strong movement with an androgynous quality as disquieting as it is distinctive. Castrati is hugely popular with audiences, starting quietly but building up to a punchy climax. Hong Kong Ballet was the first company in Asia to perform this eloquent piece. Krzysztof Pastor, Artistic Director of the Polish National Ballet, was former resident choreographer of many world-class ballet companies including Washington Ballet and Dutch National Ballet. The Journal s Jonathan Goats said of the piece: Playful lighting tricks and a simple but effective backdrop combine with the performance to produce a jubilant expression of human experimentation and a joyful reflection on ballet s evolving tradition and influence. Œuvre inspirée par les danses et l art pictural de l ère baroque celui de Michel-Ange, Vermeer et Rembrandt In Light and Shadow explore le jeu de l ombre et de la lumière en juxtaposant une gestuelle contemporaine à une musique lyrique de J.-S. Bach. L œuvre débute avec un duo délicat sur l aria des Variations Goldberg avant de dérouler une riche panoplie de solos, duos et pièces de groupe sur la musique de la Suite pour orchestre no 3. Since 1979, Hong Kong Ballet has evolved into a vibrant performing arts organisation with accomplished dancers and a strong repertoire composed of a range of stunning, technically challenging productions. Artistic Director Madeleine Onne leads the company s artistic team of over 40 dancers. The dancers, of nine different nationalities, come from Asia, Europe and North America. 8 include the Company s second appearance at Jacob s Pillow Dance Festival in the USA, the renowned Fall for Dance Festival in New York, its début in Japan at the invitation of Architanz, and two performances at the Northrop Auditorium in Minneapolis, USA in November 2014, which garnered critical acclaim. The company embarks on an exciting international tour throughout Ontario, Canada, and to New York City in March this year. The company s Education and Community Outreach Department collaborates with the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, The Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, for many programmes, which bring the art of ballet to students and the wider community of Hong Kong. 9 Biographies Madeleine Onne Artistic Director Dancer of the Swedish Royal Court Born in Stockholm, Madeleine Onne has established herself as a formidable artistic force to be reckoned with in the international dance world. One of Sweden s leading ballerinas, Madeleine Onne became renowned for her engaging style and dramatic talent. As Principal Dancer of the Royal Swedish Ballet from 1984 to 2002, she danced major roles in almost all classical repertoire as well as MacMillan s Romeo and Juliet and Manon, Cranko s The Taming of the Shrew and Onegin, Neumeier s A Midsummer Night s Dream and ballets by Balanchine, Cullberg, Goh, Kylián, Robbins, Tudor and Béjart. Before joining Hong Kong Ballet in 2009, she was Artistic Director of Royal Swedish Ballet for six years. Madeleine Onne is passionate about every aspect of ballet, on and off stage. During her dancing career she sat on a number of the Swedish government s committees responsible for awarding grants to the arts. In 1996 she founded an off-shoot of the Royal Swedish Ballet, Stockholm 59 Degrees North, which toured during the Royal Swedish Ballet s summer break. Stockholm 59 Degrees North, featuring 15 of the Royal Swedish Ballet s best soloists, presented Swedish and international contemporary choreography. Li Jun Choreographer Dancing with the Wind Graduating with flying colors in 1999, Li Jun joined the National Ballet of China the same year. He danced most principal roles in the repertoire of the company, including Swan Lake, Giselle, La Sylphide, Coppélia, Don Quixote, The Nutcracker, Fountain of Tears, Sylvia, Le Corsaire, Etudes, John Cranko s Romeo and Juliet, and Onegin, as well as Chinese ballets like The Red Detachment of Women, Raise the Red Lantern, The Peony Pavilion, and The Butterfly Lovers. 11 he joined the world tour of Roland Petit s works in Italy, France, Greece, Japan, Taiwan and Hong Kong in In 2007, he participated in a gala with the Royal Swedish Ballet and toured Japan with Roland Petit in In 2011, he performed at the gala celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Stuttgart Ballet. In July the same year, he performed his own creation Guangling Verse at Nijinsky Gala at the invitation of Hamburg Ballet, and later that month, performed at the gala of the Beijing International Ballet and Choreography Competition. Additionally, he performed The Peony Pavilion at the Edinburg Arts Festival and Swan Lake at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Li Jun created part of White Snake the Mortal World in April 2012, and in May he performed Swan Lake at the New National Theater in Tokyo. 12 Nacho Duato Choreographer Castrati Nacho Duato is a world-famous Spanish choreographer who began his career as a dancer with the Cullberg Ballet. He started to choreograph while at the Nederlands Dans Theater and was named Resident Choreographer in 1988, alongside Hans van Manen and Jiří Kylián. His works feature in the repertoires of many leading ballet companies, including The Royal Ballet, American Ballet Theater, Paris Opera, The Australian Ballet, Stuttgart Ballet, the Royal Swedish Ballet and San Francisco Ballet. His creations are known for combining balletic lines with a more contemporary sense of gravity. He won the Prix Benois de la Danse at the Stuttgart Opera, which is one of the most prestigious international awards for choreography, presented by the International Dance Association in In 2003, he was the winner of the Spanish National Dance Award in the Creative category. After 20 years as the Artistic Director of Compañía Nacional de Danza in Madrid, Nacho Duato was Artistic Director of the Mikhailovsky Ballet in St Petersburg from January 2011 to February Since August 2014, he is the Artistic Director of Staatsballett Berlin.
