2 CNA Dwayne Brown The revisiting of classics with a contemporary eye is a practise that fascinates artists across many disciplines. In the case of tonight s performance, leading-edge South African artist Dada Masilo has made the courageous step to dig into the classical ballet canon both to challenge our stereotypes and to provide us with an insight into her world today. Masilo s version of Swan Lake is particularly unique in its fast-paced, somewhat carnivalesque style, and its blend of African and Western dance influences. While tackling themes particularly sensitive in her homeland homophobia, AIDS, apartheid she breaks down the codes that have typically encompassed Swan Lake, leaving us to lament not just for the characters whose hearts are broken but for the limited view of the society that imposes restrictions on their love. Masilo s wit, daring and originality are what make her very special on the contemporary dance scene. Enjoy the performance! La relecture des classiques à partir d un point de vue contemporain est une pratique qui fascine les artistes de nombreuses disciplines. Dans le spectacle de ce soir, Dada Masilo, artiste d avant-garde sudafricaine, entreprend une démarche courageuse consistant à puiser dans le répertoire du ballet classique pour remettre en question nos stéréotypes et pour nous ouvrir la porte sur le monde dans lequel elle vit. Dans cette version singulière du Lac des cygnes, Dada Masilo nous propose une chorégraphie énergique où se croisent les influences de la danse africaine et de la danse occidentale, ponctuées de touches carnavalesques. Tout en abordant des thèmes particulièrement sensibles dans son pays homophobie, SIDA, apartheid, elle brise les codes qui régissent traditionnellement un ballet comme Le Lac des cygnes, nous laissant nous lamenter non seulement à propos des personnages qui ont le cœur brisé, mais également en raison de l étroitesse d esprit de la société qui les empêche d exprimer leur amour. 5 Word from the Choreographer Mot de la chorégraphe Swan Lake is the first Ballet that I saw when I was 12 years old. I fell completely in love with it especially Tchaikovsky s music and the tutus and I remember thinking to myself that I would create my own Swan Lake one day. I wanted my version to be more realistic and not a fairy tale. It is such a sad reality when one grows up because you realise that there are no fairy tales in life. You grow up and you have to deal with the harsh realities of life and one of those realities is that homophobia is real and rife, which is why I chose that particular issue to tackle in my version. That and the assumption that men who dance are gay. This misconception is something that is on a lot of people s minds; hence I wanted to bring it up front and explore it further. In a nutshell, my version of Swan Lake is as follows: Prince Siegfried s very ambitious parents choose him a wife, Odette. What the parents do not know, is that Siegfried is in love with a male swan, Odile. The parents pay lobola to Odette s mother. Later, Odile gate-crashes the wedding and claims his lover. The two families are totally distraught and chase Odile away. They shun Siegfried. Ultimately, Siegfried has to choose between Odette and Odile. He chooses neither. Odette, Odile and the rest of the swans commit suicide, driven by grief. I chose not to make Odette and Odile one person because I wasn t going for the Black Swan, White Swan angle. I changed the narrative a bit. Siegfried is gay and falls in love with Odile. Siegfried s parents choose and pay for a bride for him, Odette, Le Lac des cygnes est le premier ballet auquel j ai assisté. J avais 12 ans et j ai été totalement conquise, surtout par la musique de Tchaïkovski et par les tutus. Je me souviens que je m étais promis qu un jour je danserais mon propre Lac des cygnes. Je voulais créer une version plus réaliste, qui ne soit pas un conte de fées. Quand on grandit, on découvre avec regret que les contes de fées n existent pas dans la vraie vie. Quand on est grand, on doit faire face aux dures réalités de la vie, l une d entre elles étant que l homophobie existe bel et bien et qu elle est très répandue. C est pourquoi j ai décidé d aborder ce sujet dans ma version du ballet. Il y a aussi l idée préconçue selon laquelle les danseurs sont tous homosexuels. J ai voulu parler ouvertement de ce préjugé très présent chez beaucoup de gens, et explorer cette idée plus en profondeur. Voici, en résumé, l histoire que raconte ma version du Lac des cygnes : Les parents très ambitieux du prince Siegfried choisissent pour lui une femme prénommée Odette. Ils ne savent pas que Siegfried aime un autre homme, le cygne Odile. Comme le veut la tradition, les parents paient la lobola à la mère d Odette. Le jour du mariage, Odile fait irruption et vient chercher le prince, son amant. Totalement bouleversées, les deux familles renvoient Odile et rejettent Siegfried. Placé devant l obligation de choisir entre Odette et Odile, Siegfried refuse de faire un choix. Ne pouvant supporter leur chagrin, Odette, Odile et toute la troupe des cygnes se suicident. 6 but he is not interested in her. I wanted to tackle the issue of homophobia in society and how people think that different is bad. In my opinion you love who you love and I do not think that society has a right to dictate who one loves. I sympathise with all three characters because they are all in a messy situation. Odette, because the marriage was arranged without her consent and for Siegfried and Odile because it is supposedly unrequited love, except no one knows who makes these absurd rules. My version is not about Black, White, Pure or Evil. It is about freedom of expression and the right to choose who you are and how you live your life regardless of what your sexual preference is. I believe that one s personal choices if they do not harm another person are entirely one s own business. I do aim to challenge prejudice in my work. I want to ask questions that are normally swept under the carpet. These issues that society labels as taboo are very interesting to me. I want to live and work in an environment that is open, where tolerance is encouraged and discrimination is booted out. Humour is also very important to me. It allows people to look and laugh at themselves and sometimes when one is dealing with heavy issues such light relief is needed. This is not to lessen the severity of the issue, it is about humanising it. For instance, if a member of the audience who was a homophobe saw the show I would want them to laugh at their stupidity and say That was silly of me to think that way It s a long shot, but I live in hope! When I create a new work I like to do research. If it involves a dance technique that I am not familiar with then I must learn that technique from the best person possible. Breaking rules is about knowing the rules to begin with. It is also about respect for that technique. Siegfried est gai et il tombe amoureux d Odile, le Cygne noir. Les parents de Siegfried choisissent pour lui une épouse qu ils achètent à sa famille. C est Odette, une jeune fille qui laisse Siegfried indifférent. Je voulais me pencher sur le problème de l homophobie dans la société. Les gens pensent souvent que ce qui est différent est forcément mauvais. D après moi, c est à chacun de décider qui il veut aimer et non à la société de lui dicter son choix. J éprouve de la sympathie pour chacun des trois personnages, car ils vivent tous une situation difficile. Pour Odette qui doit subir un mariage arrangé sans son consentement, mais aussi pour Siegfried et Odile dont l amour est censément «interdit». Pourtant, personne ne sait qui a décidé d instaurer ces règles absurdes. Ma version n explore pas les notions de blanc, de noir, de pur ou de mauvais. Elle s intéresse plutôt à la liberté d expression et au droit de choisir qui vous êtes et comment vous entendez mener votre vie, quelles que soient vos préférences sexuelles. Je crois que nos choix personnels ne regardent que nous, dans la mesure où ils ne font de tort à personne. Dans mon travail, je cherche en effet à m attaquer aux préjugés. Je pose des questions que l on passe généralement sous silence. Les questions que la société qualifie de «taboues» me paraissent très intéressantes. Je veux vivre et travailler dans un environnement ouvert qui encourage la tolérance et bannit la discrimination. L humour est très important pour moi. Il nous permet de nous regarder et de rire de nous-mêmes, et il apporte une certaine détente lorsqu on traite de sujets graves comme l homophobie. L humour 6 Follow us: facebook.com/nacdancedansecna

7 about the techniques I am fusing, I go into the studio on my own and improvise. This is probably the most frustrating part and the most difficult because I have to make the techniques speak to each other. It can take months to get even a minute of choreography. I also love working with narrative, there is a story to tell, but how you tell it, especially the well-know narratives, is what is most challenging. I started the work by improvising to the pas de deux music by Tchaikovsky for Swan Lake and that is when the idea to fuse Classical Ballet and African Dance came to me. These two techniques are so different, but I wanted to see if I could make them coexist. It wasn t an easy feat because Ballet is very lyrical and light and African Dance is very grounded but I found that this challenge is what gave me the motivation to carry on exploring what dynamic and what new movement vocabulary could come out of this. The work was made in building blocks like Lego. I first started with the solo, then made a 30-minute version, and then the full-length work. I chose music by different composers because I did not want to use all of Tchaikovsky s Swan Lake. Not all of his pieces worked for me. Using different composers adds dynamism to the work and keeps it fresh. With a famous score like Tchaikovsky s Swan Lake, the audience thinks they know what is coming next. When it is something different, they become interested and curious. The dancers also sing in the work and there is quite a lot of talking. I wanted to make it real, not a fantasy as in the classical ballet. We sing in the Lobola and Wedding scenes, which is what happens at traditional African celebrations. There is also a lot of shouting, screaming and ululating. This noise is taken directly from our culture. South Africans vocalize and generally, ne vise pas à banaliser le sujet, mais plutôt à l humaniser. Mon but est d amener, par exemple, les spectateurs homophobes à rire de leur bêtise et à comprendre que c est idiot d avoir une telle attitude Le projet est ambitieux, mais je vis d espoir! Quand je crée une œuvre nouvelle, j aime commencer par faire des recherches. Si je fais appel à une technique de danse que je ne connais pas bien, je tiens à apprendre cette technique auprès de la personne la mieux qualifiée. Pour pouvoir enfreindre les règles, il faut commencer par les connaître. C est aussi une question de respect pour la technique que je ne connais pas. Une fois que je me suis familiarisée avec les techniques que j ai l intention d intégrer dans ma création, je me rends seule au studio pour improviser. C est probablement le stade le plus éprouvant et le plus difficile de mon travail, parce que je dois établir des liens entre les différentes techniques. Cela peut prendre des mois de travail pour obtenir une minute de chorégraphie. J aime aussi avoir une histoire à raconter, mais le plus difficile est de trouver une façon de la raconter, surtout lorsqu elle est universellement connue. J ai commencé à travailler en improvisant sur la musique du pas de deux composée par Tchaïkovski pour Le Lac des cygnes. C est à ce moment-là que m est venue l idée de fusionner le ballet classique et la danse africaine. Ces deux techniques sont extrêmement différentes, mais je voulais vérifier s il était possible de les faire coexister. Ce n était pas facile, parce que le ballet est une danse très lyrique et légère, alors que la danse africaine est extrêmement enracinée. Cependant, ce défi m a motivée et j ai voulu voir quelle dynamique et quel nouveau vocabulaire gestuel émaneraient de la confrontation de ces deux types de danse. 8 other people think we are loud and have lots of energy. It is a play on that. There are also a lot of gestures taken from classical ballet and then reworked. Swan Lake is not just about fusing two dance techniques. It is about fusing the different cultures and aesthetics as well. Dada Masilo s est fait progressivement, comme une construction avec des blocs Lego. J ai commencé par le solo, puis j ai chorégraphié une version de 30 minutes, avant de réaliser l œuvre intégrale. J ai choisi des musiques de différents compositeurs, parce que je ne voulais pas utiliser intégralement la musique écrite par Tchaïkovski pour Le Lac des cygnes. En effet, toutes les musiques de la partition ne correspondaient pas bien à ce que je voulais faire. Le fait d avoir recours à d autres musiques ajoute un certain dynamisme à la chorégraphie et lui confère un caractère original. Avec une musique aussi familière que celle écrite par Tchaïkovski pour Le Lac des cygnes, les spectateurs pensent qu ils connaissent la suite, tandis qu une musique différente maintient leur intérêt et pique leur curiosité. Par ailleurs, les danseurs chantent et parlent beaucoup, parce que je voulais que le spectacle soit réaliste et n ait pas le caractère fantastique du ballet classique. Dans les scènes de la Lobola et du Mariage, nous chantons, comme cela se fait traditionnellement pendant les fêtes en Afrique. Il y a aussi beaucoup de cris et de ululements. Cette exubérance tapageuse fait intimement partie de notre culture. Les Sud-Africains s expriment beaucoup verbalement et les autres peuples pensent que nous sommes bruyants et pleins d énergie. C est ce que veut montrer le spectacle. Il y a aussi beaucoup de gestes qui proviennent du ballet classique, mais qui sont réinterprétés. Ma version du Lac des cygnes ne représente pas seulement la fusion de deux techniques de danse, c est aussi la fusion de cultures et d esthétiques différentes. 9 About The Dance Factory À propos de la Dance Factory The Dance Factory was established in 1992, in Johannesburg, South Africa, with the primary aim of creating a home for dance. In 1994, it moved from temporary accommodation to a renovated bus repair warehouse, where it now has a large studio and a 220 seat theatre. Based in the city centre, it is accessible to dancers and audiences from town and township. Between 1993 and 2001, The Dance Factory coordinated 9 annual dance festivals for Arts Alive, a project of the City of Johannesburg. These festivals were a platform for a wide range of dance: quality international guests such as Donald Byrd/ The Group (New York), Rosas (Brussels), Scapino Ballet (Rotterdam), professional dance companies from across South Africa, tertiary dance programmes, community dance groups, youth groups covering styles ranging from classical ballet to gumboot, from physical theatre to pantsula. The festivals also offered training to young aspirant theatre technicians, many of whom are now stalwarts within the profession. The participation of township youth groups, selected by audition, brought to The Dance Factory many highly talented young people. One such was the 11 year old Dada Masilo, with the Sowetobased youth group The Peacemakers. At the request of group leaders, The Dance Factory instituted a programme of formal training. For a good 10 years, this was primarily funded by The Royal Netherlands Embassy. What began as a once a week project, developed into an intensive 7 days a week programme, where up to 60 under 18s received training in ballet and contemporary dance and performed La mission principale de la Dance Factory, créée en 1992 à Johannesburg, en Afrique du Sud, est d être une maison dédiée à la danse. Située au centre-ville, la Dance Factory est d accès facile pour les danseurs et les spectateurs de la ville et des townships. Entre 1993 et 2001, la compagnie a coordonné neuf festivals annuels pour le programme Arts Alive de la Ville de Johannesburg. Ces festivals ont servi de plate-forme à divers types de danse et de danseurs, notamment des artistes internationaux tels que Donald Byrd/The Group (New York), Rosas (Bruxelles), le Scapino Ballet (Rotterdam), des compagnies de danse professionnelles des diverses régions d Afrique du Sud, des programmes tertiaires de danse, des groupes de danse communautaires, des groupes de jeunes proposant des styles allant du ballet classique au gumboot, du théâtre physique à la pantsula. La participation des groupes de jeunes des townships (sélectionnés par audition) a contribué à faire converger vers la Dance Factory de nombreux jeunes artistes de talent. Ce fut le cas notamment de Dada Masilo, alors âgée de 11 ans, qui faisait partie du groupe de jeunes The Peacemakers de Soweto. The Dance Factory also accessed funding for formal education at the National School of the Arts and other establishments which offered quality academic tuition. Of course, many youngsters could not stay the course, but those who remained were assisted, on leaving school, to continue their training both in South Africa and abroad. On leaving the Performing Arts Research and Training Studios in Brussels, Dada Masilo returned to The Dance Factory, where she became Artist-in-Residence. As such, she had access to the studio and theatre and received technical and administrative support in order to develop her career. La Dance Factory donnait également accès à un financement pour des études supérieures à la National School of the Arts et dans d autres établissements offrant un enseignement de qualité. Bien entendu, de nombreux jeunes ne pouvaient pas toujours continuer le cours, mais ceux qui poursuivaient leurs études recevaient de l aide, à leur sortie de l école, pour continuer leur formation aussi bien en Afrique du Sud qu à l étranger. À sa sortie de l école du Performing Arts Research and Training Studios de Bruxelles, Dada Masilo est retournée à la Dance Factory comme artiste en résidence. Elle avait ainsi accès au studio et au théâtre et bénéficiait du soutien technique et administratif qui lui a permis de bâtir sa carrière. 11 Biography/Biographie Dada Masilo Choreographer, Dancer Dada Masilo grew up in the neighbourhood of Soweto, South Africa, where she was born in She began dancing at the age of 10, with an all-girl group, The Peacemakers, in Meadowlands, Soweto. The group auditioned to participate in a festival at The Dance Factory, which subsequently became Dada s training ground. She also attended Johannesburg s National School of the Arts, from which she graduated at 17. After a year as a trainee at Cape Town s Jazzart Dance Theatre, she was accepted at the Performing Arts Research and Training Studios in Brussels, where she remained for two years. Returning to South Africa late 2006, she began to create work. In 2008, she was awarded the prestigious Standard Bank Young Artist Award for Dance. Three commissions from the National Arts Festival resulted in her Romeo and Juliet (2008), Carmen (2009) and Swan Lake (2010). In 2011, she was invited to present a solo work for the Anticodes festival at Le Quartz in Brest, France. The work entitled The Bitter End of Rosemary led to a proposal by Interarts Lausanne to tour her works in Europe. So far, Swan Lake has toured extensively throughout France and also to six cities in Italy including Rome, throughout Switzerland, to Stockholm, Düsseldorf, Innsbruck, Hamburg, Luxembourg amongst others. She has created a dozen choreographies and is the recipient of two awards. Dada Masilo Chorégraphe, interprète Dada Masilo est née en 1985 et a grandi dans le quartier de Soweto, en Afrique du Sud. Elle a commencé à danser à 10 ans avec The Peacemakers, un groupe qui ne comptait que des filles, à Meadowlands, Soweto. Cette œuvre intitulée The Bitter End of Rosemary amène Interarts Lausanne à lui proposer de présenter ses créations dans le cadre d une tournée en Europe. Jusqu à présent, le Lac des cygnes a fait l objet d une grande tournée en France ainsi que dans six villes d Italie, dont Rome, puis en Suisse, à Stockholm, Düsseldorf, Innsbruck, Hambourg, et au Luxembourg notamment.
