2 1617 Nick Lafontaine From the opening moments of this haunting creation by Hervé Koubi, one is swept up into a unique world, a language of kinetic power and beauty. Inspired throughout his choreographic ventures by works of literature, music and art, What the day owes to the night is Koubi s second collaboration with street dancers from Algeria and Burkina Faso. As Koubi set out to investigate his Algerian heritage, he describes a mixing up of time and a story of links which provided the landscape for this piece. Explosive yet lyrical, it is a metaphor for the complex ties that link us all. Koubi is a new artist introduced to NAC Dance, but we are sure to see future appearances of this masterful creator. Inspiré dans sa démarche créatrice par des œuvres littéraires, musicales et artistiques, le chorégraphe signe ici sa deuxième collaboration avec des danseurs de rue d Algérie et du Burkina Faso. S attachant à explorer son héritage algérien, il évoque dans Ce que le jour doit à la nuit «un mélange d époques et une histoire de liens». Explosive et néanmoins lyrique, la pièce est une métaphore de la complexité des liens qui nous unissent. 5 About the Work À propos de l œuvre In 2009, Hervé Koubi held auditions in Algiers, taking the first step in a creation process that would culminate in 2013 with the premiere of What the day owes to the night. Inspired by the young hero in Yasmina Khadra s novel of the same name an ordinary boy shuffled from one family to the next Hervé Koubi ventures into his own history, following a path that eventually leads to History, with a big H. It is as if an Orientalist of the 19th century came to Algeria to give life to his dreams of the Orient; I would like to give life to my dreams as a child born in France who discovered belatedly his true origins and those of his parents, Algerians from birth. Through meetings and custom work developed partially under the El Din initiative, the twelve Algerian and Burkinabé performers, coming mostly from the world of street dance and hip-hop, have provided the necessary effort to bring this long-term project to its conclusion. Influenced by Orientalist paintings and the stone lace found in Islamic architecture, Hervé Koubi traces his own path, a path carved out of entanglements and a complex weave. Lace and its intricate designs have always been a source of fascination for Koubi, who sees them first as a way to create a day, a day rendered in textiles, in matter in my own history... What the day owes to the night is, as its title implies, a disruption in time and a story about links. En 2009, Hervé Koubi organisait une audition à Alger, première étape d un travail dont l aboutissement a eu lieu en 2013 avec la création de Ce que le jour doit à la nuit. À l image du héros ordinaire de Yasmina Khadra dans son roman du même nom un garçon balloté d une famille à l autre, Hervé Koubi part en explorateur au cœur de sa propre histoire, qui croise celle avec un grand H. «C est tel un orientaliste du XIX e siècle venu en Algérie pour donner vie à ses rêves de l Orient que je voudrais donner vie à mes rêves d enfant né en France, et qui n a découvert que sur le tard ses véritables origines et celles de ses deux parents, Algériens de souche.» Douze danseurs algériens et burkinabés, la plupart interprètes de danse de rue et de hip-hop, ont fourni l énergie nécessaire à la réalisation de ce projet de longue durée, composé de rencontres et de travail conçu sur mesure pour chacun des artistes et entamé dans le cadre d El Din. S inspirant de peintures orientalistes et des dentelles de pierre de l architecture islamique, Hervé Koubi trace son propre chemin, fait d enchevêtrement, de tissage complexe. «La dentelle, précise-t-il, lui qui a toujours été fasciné par le dessin, est avant tout une manière de créer le jour, le jour dans un tissu, le jour dans la matière... le jour dans mon histoire...» Ce que le jour doit à la nuit est, dans son titre même, un bouleversement du temps et une histoire de liens. 6 Biography / Biographie HERVÉ KOUBI Choreography Of Algerian roots, Hervé Koubi grew up in the South of France where he studied both biology and dance at the University of Aix-en-Provence before graduating as a Pharmaceutical Doctor in After deciding to concentrate on a dancing career and graduating from the world-renowned Rosella Hightower School of Dance in Cannes, Koubi gained professional experience as a dancer with the Opera de Marseille as well as with Jean-Charles Gil and Jean-Christophe Paré, respectively former principal dancers with the National Ballet de Marseille and the Paris Opera Ballet, on the development of new contemporary dance projects. In 2000, Hervé Koubi created his first personal project Le Golem. Since 2001 he has collaborated with Guillaume Gabriel for all his creations. He created Menagerie and Les abattoirs, fantaisie In 2006 he worked with musical artist Laetitia Sherrif for the creation of 4 30". In 2007, he reworked a piece created in 1997 on the Promenade de la Croisette in Cannes, Les Heures Florissantes (The Flowering Hours), for the Festival Cadence in Arcachon, as well as creating the contemporary and unusual work Moon Dogs a Discovery of the movements of Hip-Hop. In 2008 he created three works based on three written works: Coppelia, une fiancée aux yeux d , The Supremes and Bref séjour chez les vivants. He collaborated with writer Chantal Thomas for the creation of The Supremes, and with Roman Panassié for the creation of Bref séjour chez les vivants. In 2009 he initiated a collaboration with Ivorian dancers from from the Beliga Kopé HERVÉ KOUBI Chorégraphie D origine algérienne, Hervé Koubi grandit dans le sud de la France. Il étudie en parallèle la danse et la biologie à la Faculté d Aix-en-Provence où il obtient un diplôme de Docteur en Pharmacie en Il décide finalement de se concentrer sur la danse et obtient un diplôme du Centre International de Danse Rosella Hightower de Cannes. Il poursuit sa formation à l Opéra de Marseille et travaille avec Jean-Charles Gil et Jean-Christophe Paré, tous deux anciens premiers danseurs avec, respectivement, le Ballet National de Marseille et le Ballet de l Opéra de Paris, pour le développement de nouveaux projets de danse contemporaine. En 2000, Koubi crée son premier projet, Le Golem. Depuis 2001, il collabore avec Guillaume Gabriel sur l ensemble de ses créations. Il crée Ménagerie et Les abattoirs, fantaisie En 2006, il collabore avec la musicienne Laetitia Sheriff pour la création de 4 30". En 2007, il retravaille un déambulatoire créé sur la Croisette de Cannes en 1997, Les Heures Florissantes, pour le festival Cadences d Arcachon et crée la même année Moon Dogs, un essai mêlant écriture contemporaine et gestuelle hip-hop. Pour l année 2008, il entreprend trois essais chorégraphiques autour de trois écritures : Coppélia, une fiancée aux yeux d émail, Les Suprêmes et Bref séjour chez les vivants. Il collabore pour ces pièces avec l écrivaine Chantal Thomas (Suprêmes) et avec le notateur Romain Panassié (notation Benesh Bref séjour chez les vivants). Since 2010, he has been working with a group of 12 dancers from Algeria and Burkina Faso, all now French residents, for several productions: El Din ( ), What the day owes to the night (2013), Le rêve de Léa (2014), Des hommes qui dansent (2014), Les nuits barbares (2015),and Les premiers matins du monde (2016). He is Associate Choreographer at the Pole National Supérieur de Danse since 2014 and at the Conservatoire de Danse de Brive-la-Gaillarde since In addition to its extensive touring in France for several years, the company s season will feature a total of 65 performances in both Europe and North America with return and new engagements in Texas, California, Florida, Arkansas, Washington, Hawaii as well as Canada, in both Vancouver and Ottawa.
